You’re on a crowded bus or train and a woman gets on… 15:52 - Apr 12 with 5522 views | MattinLondon | …do you offer her your seat? For arguments sake, she doesn’t look pregnant or has any form of disability and she isn’t elderly. I wouldn’t as I don’t see why someone who happens to be female should get preferential treatment. To be it’s just a form of sexism that states that women need special treatment and looking after. The reason I ask is because a member of my team stated that they would expect a man should get-up for a woman - despite previously stating that both sexes should be treated equally. Just wondered what your views were on this rather unimportant subject.
You’re on a crowded bus or train and a woman gets on… on 19:00 - Apr 12 with 1318 views | Oldsmoker | I have done this a number of times but over 40 years ago before I had a car. Once I offered my seat to a lady who was red-faced, short of breath and in need of a seat. I stood next to the seat and she looked up and said thanks. I looked down and said you're welcome and got a downshot of her magnificent breasts. Instant Karma reward.

You’re on a crowded bus or train and a woman gets on… on 18:25 - Apr 12 by textbackup | Weird old world innit, one min you are offering a seat to a female (because gentlemen are a dying breed) next you are sexist. FWIW I’ll always offer my seat, I’ll always walk between the road and a female, and hold doors open (but I’d do that for blokes too) I’d like to think normal men of the world will continue this stuff forever. |
The best one is when you meet a bloke walking in the other direction who clearly thinks the same and you both go wider and wider until one of you is in the middle of the road and neither are anywhere near the pavement. The deciding factor for who should be in the road is, of course, who is facing oncoming traffic and can see if it is clear. One thing that does annoy me is when there is room for everyone to pass on the pavement but there is a group all walk alongside each other and not one intends to budge, forcing you into the road (or to dip a shoulder and brace yourself for contact).

It was a crowded bus so what am I gonna do? I sense there is a hidden question in there and you're right. Youngsmoker was not the moral beacon I am today.

You’re on a crowded bus or train and a woman gets on… on 18:15 - Apr 12 by Ryorry | Surely "chivalrous" means being kind & treating all people of whatever gender with consideration though? Really don't see why that should be only applied to women. |
The question was specifically regarding a woman, so that’s what my response was based on, but as others have said there are various situations when certain groups deserve such treatment also.

You’re on a crowded bus or train and a woman gets on… on 16:20 - Apr 12 by STYG | The etiquette should rightly be to offer it to anybody who needs it more. An elderly person, someone with disabilities, a pregnant woman or a man or woman with their children. For anybody else, then no. Why would you? I used to be as chivalrous as they came and in my ideal world that could still be the case, but there's a genuine risk that for every 4 women that accepted the offer, another 1 would take offence, whilst none of them should rightly be offended if I continue to sit in the seat, so why take the chance of upsetting anyone? |
Out of interest why someone with children? I always made my kids give up their seats on the tube or train for an elder person.

Depends on the ages of the child. I’d say a child under the age of 8 (maybe 10) is as deserving of a seat as an elderly person. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Unlikely to be carrying one of those on the tube, but if you'd got up to offer me your seat, I'd be happy to place a custard pie on it - if I had one in my bag - before waving you back down

"wacky papers" - - your last sentence is probably correct, but there's a difference between what most people will say in public & what they'll silently be thinking ...

There's no way anyone can afford to bet the gas money on that nowadays. That's an even more outdated notion than the other stuff.

You’re on a crowded bus or train and a woman gets on… on 22:14 - Apr 12 with 1080 views | Vic | I tend to open the door for anyone tbh. At my age I think it would be patronising if I were to offer my seat to a woman half my age, when there is no obvious need. I always open the door for my wife and walk on the road side of the path.

You’re on a crowded bus or train and a woman gets on… on 22:51 - Apr 12 with 1035 views | BigCommon | Yeah, I would, without hesitation, and I have done, many times.... Maybe its just my age... I just think it's a polite thing for a bloke to do... Hopefully they'll just say, "thankyou" or "no thanks"... Either way, no one should be bothered by it. Or make it into some great big sexist issue.... Believe it or not, don't think I've ever had a girl/woman refuse, when I've offered them a seat, or similar action, opened a door, let them in a queue etc.. I would say, most women my age (50plus), quite like a bit of chivalry in a bloke. Based on my own experience... Like I say, probably a generational thing...

I think what most women of any age (and probably most men too) would like is to be treated with respect, courtesy & consideration across the board consistently in all areas of life - including in private behind closed doors - not just on public transport or via other public gestures of "chivalry".

Right-handed man drawing his sword? Does this mean your elbow knocks her off the pavement into the road or you avoid that and slice her abdomen open as the sword is unsheathed? Or are you left-handed?
