An odd Ipswich Town question 20:31 - Apr 22 with 1931 viewsdominiciawful

Who (whom?) is our best-ever player who did not win anything whilst at the club?

And by that I mean trophies and promotions, not individual awards. So the Third Division South, Second Division, League championship, 1967/68, FA Cup, UEFA Cup, 1991/92 and Wembley 2000. And I think the Texaco Cup should be there.

Trevor Whymark did not play at Wembley in '78, but he did score in the second leg of the Texaco Cup final. Did Colin Viljoen play in the Texaco Cup win?

Kieron Dyer obviously left before we were promoted. Where would he rank?

Viljoen featured strongly in the '68 Div 2 Champion side. But, Texaco Cup aside, memorable for defeating the Budgies, but otherwise only one cheese up from the Pizza Cup, it has to be Whymark as one of the best Ipswich forwards ever.

Bryan Hamilton would have at least a FA Cup final (w or r/u) medal if it were not for a certain referee!!.... no I'm still not over it!

Me neither. He ruined a couple of World Cup games as well. When I realised he was reffing the West Brom semi… he hated mills and the feeling was mutual

Am I right in recalling that the same referee also disallowed a Bryan Hamilton goal in an FA Cup semi final for Everton? Or has my lengthy hatred for the welsh cunit served only to pickle my rapidly diminishing memory?

He’s not in the same class as some of those mentioned above but…

David McGoldrick. Such a good player - good enough to be in a promotion winning and premier league surviving team at least. Maybe more with the right team mates.

Based on the number of games played at the highest level it would probably be Titus Bramble

I’d say David Johnson - who won just about everything after leaving for Liverpool

I'd based my response on players I saw, but based on post-Town career DJ no.1 had quite the career with Liverpool.

Having watched Ipswich since 1969, I'd have to say Kieron Dyer based on the number of England caps. He won 33 caps over 9 seasons, and would presumably have got a lot more had he not been affected by injury etc. I don't think anyone else comes anywhere close.

Did David Johnson not win a Texaco cup medal? Pretty sure he played in the first leg of the final.

Yes he did and Duncan Forbes did him straight from the kick off in the first game. That meant we had to bring in a Norwich lad called Clive Woods who totally outplayed them on his own, and, if I remember correctly, scored both goals.
