Derby fan here asking what to expect in League One 13:04 - Jul 8 with 12672 viewsMellyMel55

So what's it like in League One ?

I've heard rumours of shocking referees and horrendous time wasting but just wanted the thoughts from fans of a similar sized recent Championship club ?

Quality of football, treatment from other teams fans etc.

All the best

It's fantastic - you won't want to leave. New grounds, new experiences and new dreams.

Nah, it's dire.

It's sh!t. A cesspit of mediocrity at best. Any honeymoon adjustment period is extremely transient and the novelty of playing teams who you once scoffed at on the vidiprinter will wear off almost immediately.

Yup, you're quite right about the refereeing and timewasting.

Referees are absolute garbage, and everyone (barring one or two exceptions) will see Derby as a big scalp and, as a result, will go to Pride Park to park the bus, go down with cramp from about the 20th minute onwards, and hope to either bag a point or scrape a flukey win.

Enjoy!

Pretty much as you say below - try and play a bit of football and you’ll receive plenty of cynical fouls. Many of our players who came down with us were too lightweight, although not sure if that’s just a reflection on them or the manager(s)

Good luck for the new season - definitely an away trip I fancy!

You’ve got it nailed already…. Dreadful referees, and dreadful amounts of timewasting - sometime by teams you’d expect better of.

Off the pitch, the away grounds are usually pretty friendly, and full of good football people who love the game for what it is.

What about having far more games on a Saturday at 3pm ? That's got to be better hopefully ?

I guess that could be good for attendances

Fans are OK, but getting tickets for away games can be very difficult especially given the demand for clubs like ours. You're right about the opposition, they certainly know the dark arts, get used to lots of sh1thousery by way of timewasting etc, it really is awful at times. Not making excuses, we've not been good enough and cosistently enough to get out of this league, that's on us. What I've realised is how hard it is to switch from a relegation 'backs against the walls' mindset to a ruthless, 2 points-per-game mindset to challenge at the top. It's a hard thing to shift that level of expectation.

Looks like you've added some good quality and some experienced heads, that'll help. If you can keep some of the talented youngters you've got you'll be OK. I'll be honest, I'm hoping you sell Knight and Sibley to Championship clubs. It's a tough league, some sides play some nice football such as MK Dons, but for every 1 of those there's 2 or 3 Wycombe's. Lots of unknowns with Derby, but I would say if you get it right you've got as good a chance as any.

I concur with my fellow posters.
Officials are on the whole poor at best.
Time wasting and sh1thousery at its finest.
The novelty of new grounds to visit wears off very quickly if you can get a ticket in the first place.
There won’t be Steve Evans to goad this season which at least was fun as his face turned the colour of beetroot.
A few smaller clubs fans will act like Billy big bollox on their big day out.
Some of the pitches will be akin to the local park.
Exeter and Plymouth are bloody miles away.
There’s a plethora of reasons to get out of this God awful division as soon as possible as we have discovered.
Good luck, you’re going to need it, but not at our feckin expense

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Don't develop a complex about playing against teams you think should be below you in the pyramid and you'll have a great time.

Oxford were the worst for time wasting last season. Laughable.

Yeah, new signings seem good but we've still only got about 14 players despite those signings.

Knight I think will be sold, Sibley will stay but I'm also worried about our midfielder Krystian Bielik. He plays for Poland and expects to be in the World Cup but his international manager has said that it's no good him playing in the 3rd division

We also lost our leftback to Werder Bremen last week for free cause his agent used some TUPE law about new ownership means cancelled contract, or something

This will probably be a transition season for us but you never know

It's the birthplace of sh1thousery and poor refereeing ... You have to accept that some teams are on a really low budget and will just do what they can to grind out points... The standard is probably higher than people expect (top end sides).. It's not a cake walk for veteran players these days. And any lightweight players can get bullied.. Our recruitment has been centered on more robust players this window...It's a long grind. Squad depth will see you through, more so than 4 or 5 decent players....Don't expect to just turn teams over. If you scrape a 1-0 against a "lesser side", well, 3pts is 3pts and move on...Your fan base will help. But you'll find some teams will raise it in front of your bigger home crowds.. You will get some teams that want to play football. But be prepared for some frustrating games, where they just park the bus and roll around.... Best of luck to you...

Contra the majority on here... Whilst it's likely you'll get frustrated at timewasting and bad referees, I don't think it's actually any worse in League One than in the Championship. It's true that teams that are getting the result they want will often try to ensure as little football as possible is played. It's also true that referees aren't very effective at preventing that. But the same is true at all levels of football, up to and including the Champions League.

In League One you get National List rather than Select Group 2 referees, so they are lower standard (according to the FA). I find the main way that manifests itself is that occasionally they'll do something utterly bizarre (like trying to headbutt our players) but the actual refereeing is much of a muchness.

I suppose the main things you'll note - the quality of opposition teams is surprisingly high and higher now than it was when we came down in 2019. League One has been steadily accumulating down-on-their-luck Championship-sized clubs for a while now and you'll find at least 7 or 8 sides down here big enough to be competitive at the level above with the right management. IMO It's easier to stay in the Championship than escape League One. There's also a pack of over-achieving mid-size clubs that seem to find an inexhaustible supply of good young players. The rest are generally miniscule clubs with small grounds and small pitches, who play in a disciplined, organised fashion, with a great deal of athleticism and a sprinkling of good ability.

If your lot, like ours, get bogged down in complaining about refs and gamesmanship, you'll know that you've screwed up, basically.

Sort of agree with points below.. but not fully

Sometimes the refereeing is poor, but tends to go both ways over the 90mins. We have had good refs though.

Never enough away tickets for bigger clubs.

I think the standard of football is higher than some people are making out, and the opposition tend to play up against the big teams, which makes it hard. But even when the opposition are lower quality technically, they will have attributes of set piece delivery and fight that make it difficult.

Even some of the better lower position teams do tend to try and waste time in the last quarter (NFLism there), and will pack their defences. So key is start hard and fast.

But my main point is there is no easy way out of this league, there is no 'HMS P!ss The League' by any means. You get mired. Teams at our level are also under huge pressure to succeed, and its a burden to carry. But what I wanted to really emphasise is that last season there was Rotherham and Bolton who ended beating us convincingly over 180mins, and other teams who are tough to beat. And we finished 11th with a great squad (albeit hampered by a poor manager in the first half of the season). 11th.

Next season we will be really strong, we've got the manager, we know the league, we've got the players, we have huge momentum in the fan base. But I think Sheff Weds, Bolton, Plymouth and MK will give you a game. I assume Barnsley and Peterborough will not be easy. And do not underestimate Oxford, Charlton, Pompey and MK Dons.. who have good managers and the ability to play good football.

And believe you me an away match at Forest Green and Accrington is no cake walk!

In short expect a very tough season.. and trying to gel a team of older players to be ready is gonna be a big challenges - Oxford, Charlton and Barnsley will give you a good test of where you're at. And I think we'll get the same from Bolton!

Enjoy it, but BE PREPARED

Must admit it was bewildering to see how many points were needed just to make the playoffs last season in League One

Not much margin for error there then

Any list of teams to look out for sh1thousery style ?
