You and Ulla are focusing on the highest paid. It's not just about the people who drive the trains. And this is something the Tories push out to smear the strikers.

EDIT: Just read the story and looks like it is just drivers according to that. If that's true then I have less sympathy.
[Post edited 14 Jul 2022 16:41]

The drivers have a different union but it's all part of the same dispute, the workers you're sympathetic to will be grateful the drivers have joined them.

(Not that I see any particularly reason why the drivers should be expected to sit there after a 3-year pay freeze and accept another reduction in their real wages without any push back. Everyone has the right to defend their standard of living)

I’m in agreement with this, I could kind of sympathise with (even if I didn’t agree with) the previous RMT strikes as these were the so called “lower paid” and “unskilled” workers but £60k a year train drivers striking is a joke

This thread is seriously in danger of straying into General territory but I suppose there is enough of a link to football, given the original post! In any event, train drivers have the wages that they have for two reasons. One is that they are unionised. The second is the way the privatised railway system was set up, with rival companies poaching drivers off each other due to a shortage of drivers, and prepared to pay higher wages to do so. In any event, my understanding is that the dispute is about more than just pay, with job cuts and a cut in services being threatened. At the end of the day, privatisation has been a disaster for the railways, and the Government has recently had to nationalise all the rail companies and is seeking to cut costs. But surely with climate change and rocketing petrol prices, now is not the time to cut services, which in turn discourages train use. Instead, we should be following the approach in other European countries and seeing the railway system as vital to the country and worth subsidising, rather than attempting to run it at a profit.

There’s a certain irony about people who don’t even go to games in this thread mocking those of us frustrated that we now have major travel problems.

My comments in favour of industrial action were certainly not mocking because I may well be affected by the strike more than you as I was planning to travel to the game by train from Kent, and will now have to brave the M25, Dartford Crossing and A12 on what is likely to be a very busy holiday weekend. Indeed, there were a couple of occasions last summer when what should be a two hour journey to the game turned out take four hours because of congestion. Given this, I'll probably set off fairly early, and take a trip down to Felixstowe before the game.

...it's a bit OTT really.

Even if you believe in Trade Unions, strikes and are a massive "comrade", there has to be a limit.

The GA train service will effectively be down from 23rd July until the 1st August.

Our lot were going for a booze up on the 23rd and possibly taking in the Millwall game - if we could still walk by kick off.

It coincided with my Grandsons birthday party so to sweeten things and to gain approved passage I had to stump up for a bouncy castle the size of the Empire State Building.

So, now - I'm out of pocket and have to listen to a load of screaming kids all day when I could and should be behaving like a tvvat in assorted hostelries. .

What do you suggest workers do, other than industrial action. Remember, most key workers have had year on year, real terms, pay cuts. It's time everyone said enough is enough.

Tell them to get on with it and stop throwing their toys out of their pram.

We’re going through an economical crisis.

This has directly impacted my wife’s income who is on no where near as much money as this lot.

The public are made to suffer financially, but also socially. After the last few years we’ve been through people are going to miss the first game of the season.

I really hope they don’t get what they want.

Wages are crazy

My daughter earns a very good wage in care but my son in law is under manager of a very large multiple retailer store and he gets the same as we pay the odd job man

Nothing seems to add up, I would employ son in law tomorrow on a higher wage but he is brainwashed into doing what he does.

Yesterday I asked someone a price for delivering 5 cabinets from Birmingham to Cannock and they wanted £250

There seems to be a massive imbalance with regards to wages, some people seem to be willing to work for nothing and some are earning mega bucks.

It's a bit crazy - I don't understand what's going on to be perfectly honest.

Edit - I apologise if my reply was out of sequence but I actually fell asleep while I was writing it.

Well that's some take.

What people earn in relation to someone else is irrelevant. If you earned £30k last year in a job and inflation is 9% and you're offered no extra pay then it's effectively a pay cut. People can live with that and many have for years, without pay rises and with worsening conditions. But when the bosses are sharing £100m profit between themselves then this is the only option those people have.

Why should they just get on with it because someone else only earns £20k or £25k?

You seem to have no sympathy because of your wife's situation or people missing the first game of the season. That's a good reason for a rail worker to suffer a real terms pay cut. To help you specifically but not themselves? Laughable.

These people don't enjoy the stress and the negative media attention. You reckon they are doing it for a few % pay rise just to be greedy? It's to ensure safety and to ensure they don't end up needing a food bank to feed their kids.

People accept jobs based on their circumstances and live within their means. Their house, their car, their lifestyles are all made in accordance with what they are rightly paid. When the goalposts are moved by their employers who have plenty of money to make the situation right but hog it all for themselves then this is all people can do to try and get what they are fairly entitled to.

You saying you wouldn't support your wife doing something that helped you two because it would impact on others. From your post I can tell you wouldn't give a hoot about others needs, you'd look after yourselves, which is all these people are doing.

Their own families needs will come before yours and you'd do exactly the same.

This is all on the government and the fat cats creaming profits whilst their own staff use food banks and struggle to put food on the table.

Check in with the London branch. Can see no reason why they couldn't organise a coach (or more with demand) from Stratford to Portman Rd. Failing that, am sure they'll have a number of fans driving / sharing petrol from London.

Fingers crossed you (and everyone else) can get to the ground. We do it for Boxing day matches so sure many can make alternative arrangements here too.

What's the alternative? Hundreds or thousands of people being shafted just to help you? If anything the only selfish attitude here is yours.

It's crap but that's life. I missed an away game last season that I had train tickets and a hotel booked for because I tested positive for covid the night before. Lost about £80 and more importantly for me I missed the game. These things happen.

Blame the government. Other countries are giving free rail travel to help with the cost of living crisis. I think it's Germany that allows you to pay £9 for 3 months travel!

It once cost me £76 to go to London from Ipswich. £76! On that very train I looked up that I could have flown to Dublin, Glasgow and Paris on that day for almost half that.

Only one set of people to blame for the public transport in this country and that's politicians lining their pockets and those of their mates.

Yes, good point. German Rail are offering any trips for 9 Euros for the next month.

But - who do you want to praise or blame here?

Hats off to The Gerries, no qualms about that from me, but - are you suggesting that if our railway was nationalised we could or should do the same thing?

Here's the thing - I'n not entirely sure about mass nationalisation as I have lived within it and it was sh1t.

Having said that - I think that we have a duty of care to get the people to work on time in a comfortable way and if there was anything that should be nationalised I'm thinking travel.

But............ Don't think for one minute that nationalising transport would be the big answer. Trust me, if Big Gov owned the railways and they need some money then you are going to get screwed baby!

The train service at the moment is too expensive but quite efficient, when it was last in the governments hands it was an absolute sh1t show - I, and many others were there.

Nationalise it - I don't care, but don't think it will be any better.

I don't trust the government to run it and I don't trust anyone else to run it.

In an ideal world it would be government run and they wouldn't be a bunch of crooks.

I don't even mind stuff being run to make profits for shareholders. That's cool. You've bought a thing, invested in it and you only want it to make profit, that's how the world works.

But when you charge £50 a ticket, maybe take £45 for yourselves and use £5 to keep the toilets clean and the trains running on time and run enough trains that people aren't on top of each other and not take £50 profit and let it become run into the ground.

That's too much to ask these days.
