Exactly they are targeting the wrong people.

The thing is that annoys me is the hypocrisy, are you telling me the protestors do not drive, fly, use trains?!

These protestors are all just champagne socialists

I watched it last night. Car crash of an interview.

Yup, awful interview, lack of media training really shows and she's letting herself get far too emotional.

But she gets airtime.

They wouldn't be giving that to the people at Farnborough. Or the plethora of scientists with very stark warnings.

And this is, again, part of the issue. Why aren't the media pressing the Government about them opening new oil and gas fields?

….that, as Austin was trying to get across, the airtime she is getting is about the methods not the motives.

The wider public are losing interest in the motive and just talking about the methods.

This interview is just going up add to the perception that they are a bunch of nutters climbing on motorway gantries. People have stopped caring why they are doing it.

I’m really not surprised they have decided to pack it in after that!

They could have chosen to give airtime to sensible people, but they chose an easy target. And this is a serious broadcaster.

It's like shooting fish in a barrel.

My point is that Sky and whoever else could choose to publicise the better targeted protests but don't. They could choose to have people on who are experts in the field who could tell the public how serious this is, but they don't. The only people they want on are those that get people annoyed, that's the only thing that works.

They could even try pressing the Government a little bit more than the odd question about their policies which directly contravene our commitments made just a year ago, but they don't.

I just find it bizarre that people get so upset about this but just shrug their shoulders and say they're aware of climate issues and that's about it.

People will be getting angry in a couple of decades and will probably pretend they always cared.

She made a really good point in that interview.

Would you let a representative of Benson & Hedges into an intervention to stop someone smoking.

It is funny, and does show how the media work. I think it has been very well documented the disparity in how much time the Greens had on BBC TV vs Nigel Farage, despite, at the time the relative number of people and representation the Green Party had was greater than Nige.

She and other JSO representatives are getting more air time than an elected MP did.

Was it truly helpful air time though?

Every time I see one of the protestors interviewed or in YouTube, they come over as slightly deranged and cultist even. Sorry to say that too, cos the message then becomes easy to write off as associated with left field thinking instead of it being protrayed as a life and death matter for everyone.

….that the people getting angry about the protests are doing nothing about climate change.

As I said previously, lack of media training as well as a somewhat disingenuous or ignorant question from Austin.

She can't be there because she's not invited and I doubt they'd be accepted as an observer organisation.

Whereas the fossil fuel delegates are being invited by nations, usually those with the most to gain by keeping the status quo.

….of empathy and where it lies as an individual.

I’m sure many people have empathy with the motives behind the protests (I certainly do) but then also have empathy with those that are suffering because of the methods.

For many people it’s easier to empathise with individuals, whether it’s those that can’t get to funerals, can’t get to hospital or can’t earn a wage, than it is to look at the wider picture.

I think It’s human nature to side with individuals.

Nobody should miss their father’s funeral because of Indigo Rumbelow and her mates.

Again they're making a valid point in the worst way possible.

All they had to say is that equating morality with lawfulness doesn't make sense and that plenty of people have been arrested and put in jail for the greater good.

On the one hand,

People are fed up with having their lives disrupted. Here are the words of some individuals who have been hurt.

On the other hand,

We need to shake large chunks of the electorate out of their suicidal complacency, selfishness and ignorance in any way we can. Everything is at risk of collapse if we fail.

Some people are just intellectually dead to the imbalance in this argument, and will probably remain so.

But until the media start giving air time to those who are doing more properly targeted protests (which are happening) and / or people who have expertise in the subject these sorts of protests will keep happening.

This is the best, or at least the most lively, climate debate we've seen on this forum for at least a year. Mostly these things are met with apathy and indifference these days, despite the unrivalled importance they have to each and every one of us, and our children.

This is a good thing surely, whatever side of the argument you're on? I wonder what has stimulated it?

Nobody would be having this conversation if we treated climate change with the fear and respect it deserves.

I do have empathy with people caught in a traffic jam (like thousands of other traffic jams that are also man-made). But I have an awful lot more empathy for the billions around the world who will suffer and/or die from climate change as we wipe out centuries of progress in making people’s lives better. And for younger generations that we are royally screwing over if we leave them to deal with the effects and the much higher costs of the looming socio-economic and environmental collapse.

Your “concerns” around the nature of the protests and how you want to police them look ridiculous in comparison. Let’s be real here: isn’t it really just an extension of the denialism and continued inactivity using “empathy” as an excuse?
