Your posts on this thread have been like a player having a tantrum on the pitch, getting sent off and then trying to carry on the argument whilst being escorted off the pitch.

Has part of this thread been deleted? Otherwise it seems to have unnecessarily escalated from the point of a poster mentioning the names of previous World Cup countries.
I remember when we had West Germany and East Germany. CCCP. Yugoslavia. Etc. I’m sure all of those countries would sound gobbledegook to younger football fans.
Texted my very sweary Dutch friend last night to get his take on gtsb's post.
He phoned me this morning. After taking out the profanities, and to be honest he'd be pretty much mute if swear words were taken out of the dictionary, the answer was ....
"I couldn't give a f.... mate".
We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub.

Have I missed something on this thread?
….remarkable isn’t it??!
SB even had the cheek to run off and complain to Phil that I had given him a downvote, as if it didn’t deserve it.
For once I was lost for words.

Stokie, I’m still at a loss. Zaire was the preferred name used by Belgium colonisers. Congo the preferred name by British colonisers. Zaire as a country ceased to exist in the lates 90’s due in part to the overspill from the Rwanda genocide. It’s now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Even though I was quite young I still remember the clip of the Zaire WC game that Lucan posted. I really don’t see anything sinister in the op. But I stand to be corrected if I’ve missed context.

Too much Sherry is my guess.

I’d ask someone what they would like to be called and defer to that, rather than decide for them. Same for their nationality.

In my old job I used to need to take photo ID from people and one woman had a Netherlands passport. She saw me write 'Holland passport' (it was on an informal note) and promptly told me she hated it when people said Holland and not Netherlands.

Gotta say Phillip baby.............
My feelings are that they call it Netherlands but just say Holland when in company of Brits and that's just to be polite.
Can't count my Holland trips up but the first time I went was in UEFA Cup final and to this day I really don't know - probably about 70 now.
Arguably the saddest thing is that every time I have been I have just gone to Amsterdam, sorry, I just love the place, I mean, what's not to like. I really want to go to Haarlem, I've tried so many times but I can't get off the train!
*** Thinking about it, I have been to Rotterdam a couple of times - I remember this now because I was a kid and I was doing what the tourists do and I was with this beautiful bird and I was doing my absolute very best and her bloody wig fell off.
After all the messy business she wanted 75 Guilders but I only had a bit of Sterling and she questioned the currency situation - to be honest she didn't know jack sh1t and she probably got a fiver.
Now then - you might rip me apart but who got the bad deal?
She gave me genital warts, and let me tell you, they are a Mlotherfecker. They have to burn them off on a weekly basis with this liquid acid sh1t******.
******Apologies to younger newly effected genital warts sufferers but I'm sure things have moved on somewhat.
Ah that’s a really nice story Dad, thanks for sharing.

Since then i've used Netherlands.
If I was doing something official I'd use Tbe Netherlands, but in common speak I always tend towards Holland. Just rolls of the tongue easier and less clunky. I live in Holland and no Dutch person has ever complained about the use of Holland and many use it themselves when speaking English. If someone gets offended by the use of it then maybe the problem is with them. It's hardly a hanging offence, but I guess it's more of a sneery one-upmanship thing to correct someone.
