We play really good football..... 21:55 - Dec 29 with 2847 viewsBloots

....but we also play really, really predictable football.

We need to freshen up both the team and the style if we are going to make the top two this season.

Sort of agree, to a point. Clearly the way we play is delivering wins more often than not, and as long as we get the first goal (we usually do) then we're fine, but if a team gets a lead (or even just an equaliser!) to hold onto then we do tend to struggle to break them down.

Lincoln
Wycombe
Cheltenham
tonight

All games where we have utterly bossed it, yet not got a win. Now, it isn't reasonable to expect to win every game, but we're (almost) good enough to be doing that, so just a little tweak in either personnel or approach could push us up another level. I think it is likely that it'll be new players rather than a dramatic change in tactics though.

...than just individual games.

I don't think that Plymouth or SW are as predictable as us on such a regular basis.

Teams know exactly how to set up against us before games start. I'm not saying it's easy for them, but if they do it right then we can struggle.

As for changing during a game, personally I think that when it's required, we can take more risks and not always play "percentage" football.

You and some of the board seem to think we were playing inanimate mannequins on 22:22 - Dec 29 by unstableblue

Tonight

Rather than a Pompey team that really needed a performance to kick start their season after a poor run

Is littered with good players - they brought Tunnicliffe and Scarlett OFF the bench

Had the talent to be able to score a worldie free kick

And went very deep in a very well organised defensive shape

And yet we score two, come back twice to secure a point, had 70% possession and had enough chances to win, 3 points we deserved

All in front of a hostile home ground.

Let’s see how Lincoln and Plymouth deal with us

What alternative is there though with 10 behind the ball? A shot from outside the box? Working a space to get a shot off?

the only shot outside the box we had resulted in a goal. why dont we try this more often.

Agreed. As I said on another thread, it all felt a bit Lambert-ball tonight.

We are also seeing some very inconsistent performances. Ladapo, Burns and Harness all excellent against Oxford but very poor tonight and same for Aluko as well.

As you say, a good opportunity to freshen in Jan.

What? Lambert was all about defensive shape but with no clue in possession. We’re not quite the opposite, but we look much more comfortable on the ball going forward. Chalk and cheese to Lambert imo.

I don’t think we’re predictable either. We became so in that match because Pompey had everyone behind the ball, but we can build with short passes or go long with a ball into the striker with a knockdown or balls over the top to run in to. I think we mix it up fairly well, but there’s only so much you can mix it up when faced with two banks of five.

We had more than one, off the top of my head Evans and Morsy both had a couple, there may have been more.

Probably a little harsh and not generally speaking of course but that's how it felt tonight (particularly in the second half). A lot of possession which equated to nothing.

Equated to nothing ... except for an equaliser, you mean.

You may be right. Davis is exceptional, but he did seem rooted to the spot rather than making a challenge for the ball. I struggle to get up off the sofa though, so easy for me to say!

Raggett had the advantage that he was coming on to the ball so that was always going to be a tough ball to defend. Would Leigh have done better…possibly yes but Davis’ overall contribution this season has been outstanding so I’m not going to hold this against him!

yep. even edwards seems to have stopped doing this, and i thought that was his game.

he had the perfect opportunity to with about a min left, but he cuts back to JD with a poor pass and the chance has gone.

We play really good football..... on 22:00 - Dec 29 by homer_123

Do we?

We never stopped playing our way....we didn't end up lumping it long. For once we have a manager that wants us to impose our football on the other team and make them worry about us.

The lads or KM didn't panic... we kept playing and moving the ball and it created that scoring opportunity to get the draw. Against 11 players camped around their box.

I love the fact KM isn't fazed when things don't quite go to plan and instills a confidence and structure where players can play with freedom in the knowledge that if a mistake is made they aren't going to get shafted and KM wants us to play this way regardless.

Love it.

I'd say the equaliser came from us doing something that we didn't do all game - shoot from outside the box.

For a side who apparently has scored the most goals from outside the box.. we didn't seem to take the opportunities presented to us.. Evans, Morsy, Donacien, all had opportunities through the game to have a crack but stood on the ball and passed it sideways.

I'm all for calm, passing football. BUT if the opportunity presents itself, hit it - then you score goals like we did with the equaliser.

a niche perspective

… and then post again

In a game we won 3-0 against one of the form teams in the league (who incidentally won 3-1 tonight)

We were anything but predictable, in fact at times we were absolutely superb in the way we carved into them… with innovative incisive play

Leading their manager to say we were by far the best team in the league

So Harness and Ladapo had an off night…

Why the negativity when we remain second and have played well at times tonight
