Good summary by Stu on 09:08 - Feb 16 with 3945 views | Westcountryblue | Really good article that. You can't fault the owners, Ashton or the fans who have done a terrific job this season. The pressure is all on McKenna and his team now. McKenna has an excellent track record as a coach, but the jury is still out on his management skills. We have looked predictable in recent months and questionable decisions have be made regarding recruitment and selection.

But it is a very good article. I didn't used to have a very high opinion of Stu when he first started (too many factual mistakes), but for years now, he's been on the money in terms of analysing the state of the club, the feeling of the fans etc, and I've completely changed my mind - he's excellent.

You could see from Andy and Stu's post-match video on Tuesday that they were both too shell-shocked to properly comment at the time, and I think that Stu said he needed time to marshal his thoughts which he has now done.

Very good article. I think the key (and ongoing worry) is central midfield. Morsy has not been rested for a while and the bite that he had pre-Christmas has dropped slightly, maybe because of the fear of suspension from the accumulation of yellow cards. It is essential that Luongo comes in sooner rather than later to alleviate the pressure on Morsy and Humphreys | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Things need to improve immediately starting Saturday. Some bad luck with the injuries in Central Midfield, but clearly the honeymoon is over for KMcK. The owners will not accept failure. I hope and pray it works out for him, because in the long run, I think he will be a great coach.

We are very well served by different channels. Stuart Watson and Andy Warren are outstanding journalists and the output from Blue Monday, KOA and TWTD are excellent. I am not very familiar with the output from other clubs but l suspect that they are mostly inferior. The Pinkun puts some of their content behind a paywall.

That is slightly contentious, but the team can't expect the fans to be unconditionally onside if results continue to be disappointing and performances toothless. One of the problems is, however, that people switch from love to hate, adulation to rage, with no middle ground. Symptomatic of the soap-opera-style emotional extremes of the modern world.

I can tell you that Colchester get virtually no 'newspaper' coverage at all that goes beyond passing on the club's press releases and saying that they were bad when they lost and that they were good when they won, which is certainly not always true. What there is mostly behind a paywall. The EADT stopped covering them several years ago now, and the (Colchester) Gazette does little more than wait for fans' reviews of the game and summarises them (and then posts a link back to the same place as the opinions came from.) Difficult questions are seldom asked, let alone answered. (At the moment, for example, it would be nice to know what has happened to Emyr Huws and Freddie Sears. Are they injured? Are they even still training with the squad? if not, why not? ) At the other end of the scale, Bradford City, for example, still have proper reporting in the Telegraph and Argus that J.B.Priestley would recognise as journalism, and match reports that go beyond 'so-and-so had a good game', and player ratings that suddenly shoot up by two or three points if the team sneak a last-minute winner. I put Town half way on that scale, in terms of newspaper coverage A lot of what Watson writes here just looks like a summary of what I (and probably he) have read here on TWTD, and there's not much in this article that hadn't been proffered by the more rational voices here. It kind of half way between listening to a load of people on the bus home from the game and a full-on dissection in the Athletic, who would probably go stronger on the 'how are Town too predictable tactically' angle, which in my opinion is the most interesting part of the article. Where Town fans are particularly blessed (as well as having TWTD for news) is having a whole BBC local station pretty much to themselves. p.s. I went to see Colchester on Tuesday, and I'm sure if anyone else here did they'd agree it was the most tedious game of football ever. We're all used to ONE team slowing the game down at any given part of the game, but when both teams do it right from the kick-off, taking an age over every throw-in, and taking them in the wrong place happy in the knowledge they'll be sent back, then the pain for the spectator os more than doubled. Coming out of the ground, everyone was commenting on what a truly dire experience the game was. There was no hint of this in the match 'report'. p.p.s. Why can't throw-ins taken from the wrong place be counted as foul throws, and simple re-awarded to the other team? ) [Post edited 16 Feb 2023 10:31]

Colchester are essentially a non-league club with rubbish attendances in a soulless stadium. Why would they get in-depth coverage?

I find the post match comments by Stuart Watson and Andy Warren insightful both immediately after the match and also after a period of reflection. Their output via KOA is very informative and is very well moderated by Mark Heath. I find Phil Ham's match summaries dovetail with my own observations pretty much every time. Stuart Watson makes the point that as a journalist he has to avoid being overly emotional but should present himself as phlegmatic. As l said earlier, the output from all these sources is of a high quality.

This stat is very pertinent. We create a good amount of openings and we have scored a good number of goals generally. However, it feels like we miss a cutting edge (that clinical striker we have been looking for) and we don't create all that many "must score" type chances (especially when penalties don't seem to count as those!).

Ladapo and Chaplin have excellent records in terms of goals per minutes. Less rotation of those two might help.

I am not certain it is that simple. In our first 15 matches we won 5 and drew 1 of the matches Ladapo didn't start while losing 2 and drawing 1 of the 9 he did start. I would imagine KM expects Hirst to be as effective as an option. If he doesn't give Hirst the opportunity to be, he cannot be. Chaplin has started most of our league matches and we won those he didn't start up until recently.

With Mike Bacon and Carl Marston having left Archant, the sports desk to cover Suffolk and North Essex sports is basically 3 people purely covering Ipswich Town. They obviously follow the clicks and numbers, but it's not great to see everything else just basically ignored. I assume Ipswich Witches will be from now on, Colchester totally dropped a few years back, local cricket and non-league football has nothing covering it now.

Lee Grant is a UEFA A qualified coach who is currently working on his pro-licence. Those qualifications aren't given out willy-nilly and has taken him a number of years of taking coaching sessions at a high level. As a lot of late stage footballers do, he had been taking coaching sessions for a number of years before retiring. Until the game on Tuesday as a club we had the 2nd best shot conversion rate in the league and were the top scorers. Failing to score then has dropped us down to 4th but only marginally. Really not convinced that his footballing role prior to moving to coaching full time has had much to do with our issues.

I said a few weeks ago that a GK as a striker coach might be one of the best angles to take. However, without sweet tasting onions in net as proof of the pudding recently, I'm now having my doubts too. [Post edited 16 Feb 2023 12:31]
