Starmer.....same old, same old..... on 09:56 - Feb 23 by Ryorry
I like you Bankster, but quite frankly I'm sick of you & a couple of others on here doing your level best to try & ensure the tories get to remain in power in perpetuity.
If I (and I know others on here have said this goes for them too) can hold our noses & vote Labour during Corbyn's leadership, then I'd have thought you could do the same during Starmer's leadership.
Did you stop supporting ITFC during Hirst's reign?
Well said Ryorry. It's like a smear campaign all over again. We get it Bankster, you don't like him. Do you have to tell us on a weekly basis?
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Re your summary paragraph. That is my understanding, too. The Court summing up basically says "Shamima Begum should almost certainly be viewed as a victim of Child Sexual Exploitation and international sex trafficking BUT we can only rule on whether the Home Secretary acted unlawfully in making the decision, and, in our judgement, she didn't."
As you say, the case is all about nuance (just as with the case of the Trans Woman convicted of rape in Scotland) and in both cases they would best be decided by competent professionals well away from the glare of tabloid sensationalism, or politicians trying to score easy wins.
Starmer has completely ignored the summing up and the point about Child Sexual Exploitation.
I totally understand that were he to publicly say "The Government have got this wrong, she must be let back into Britain, have her citizenship restored, and undergo a deradicalisation programme" (which is 100% the right thing to do with a victim of Child Sexual Exploitation) he would be slaughtered in the tabloids and lose votes, but it is one of a number of things where he could just be a bit braver. Like not daring to blame Brexit, for example. Or not supporting Unions during the current wave of anti-austerity Mk2 NHS strikes.
I would still vote for whoever would stand the best chance of defeating the Tories in any constituency I lived in, but we have the prospect of Starmer as PM, with a thumping majority, and refusing to do anything progressive or positive with that opportunity.
" .. but we have the prospect of Starmer as PM, with a thumping majority, and refusing to do anything progressive or positive with that opportunity."
How about at least giving him a bloomin' chance to do so! - is what the thread is all about.
Said on another thread a few days ago that KS may be using the 'Joe Biden' strategy - campaign post-Trump (post-Johnson/Truss/Sunak) as a contrasting solid, stolid, reliable wooden horse to gain voters' confidence & hence power; once in you then have the potential to unleash bolder policies.

Vote Labour; nothing much will change but things will be very, very slightly better then they are now. I know it's not snappy but at least it's honest
"Vote Labour, save the NHS, create a buoyant Green Economy"
is what I'd use.
Just had the email from KS that other LP members will have had also -
"Today in Manchester, I set out how my Labour government will be driven by five missions:
1. Secure the highest sustained growth in the G7 2. Build an NHS fit for the future 3. Make Britain’s streets safe 4. Break down the barriers to opportunity at every stage 5. Make Britain a clean energy superpower
I believe that delivering on these five bold missions is how we will restore Britain’s pride and purpose, giving our country its future back.
To do it, we must win the next general election. We must be ready to show the country that Labour will build a better Britain. That there is light at the end of the tunnel."
It's points 2. & 5. that are the most important to me - and the "light at the end of the tunnel" bit - good one that - people are desperate for some hope ðŸ‘

Sadly, hope and confidence are not the same thing.

I'm looking forward to hearing the measurables behind the generic statements though - we've heard it for the Green Plan but what are the specific targets for the NHS, education etc

Hardly bold missions, all three major parties would say the exact same thing.
It's David Brent-esque. Meaningless soundbites.

Polly Toynbee’s articles reveal someone who’s not serious about being a journalist.
A more accurate headline would be “Yes, Starmer is an untrustworthy liar but he’s OUR untrustworthy liar.”
I must admit to feeling uncomfortable about those pledges and wish it hadn't happened, but I'll be honest - to me there's an element of truth in him being ;our' liar. I do wish Owen Jones would change the record though - point made already. many times. Other dirty centrists may well disagree.
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

I've already read it. Doesn't say a great deal either. "If you never say what you'll do, you'll never be a liar."
I'd like somebody to explain how we can be an environmental powerhouse whilst also having the world's highest growth, but I won't hold my breath.
Maybe I should just be less dogmatic and more patriotic, then it would all make sense.

Not convinced by her point about Covid and the Ukraine war changing things then. I'm not going to argue - just put the link here to save someone typing something similar.
You probably want someone more eloquent than me to explain that question, biut isn't there money to be made from going greener, at least in theory?

I’m surprised that after Johnson, people can still think having a shape-shifting unprincipled void as PM is a good thing.
Add to that a cabinet of similarly empty suits, status quo-proppers and cash-takers and there’s no indication we’ve learnt a single f@#ing thing.
As awful as the Tories are, you almost have to laugh at the state of an Opposition who are looking more and more the same people.

there's absolutely money to be made from leading the green revolution, could also be a force for good if we aid it to developing countries.
however, "growth" is difficult to achieve without harming the environment

Whilst very difficult to achieve, they are a bit more ambitious and uplifting than Tony Blair's five rather transactional pledges (fast-track punishment for persistent young offenders by halving the time from arrest to sentencing) or Sunak's rather pointless or grubby ones ("We will pass new laws to stop small boats, making sure that if you come to this country illegally, you are detained and swiftly removed”).
I suppose the thing is that Labour's heart is in the right place, so despite my grumbles, all we can hope is that things will get better
As regards a slogan, how about borrowing the words from Mission: Impossible which I used to watch back in the late 60s and early 70s.
"Your mission, Kier, should you choose to accept it, is..."

I'd be very interested to see the proposals for how they plan to achieve aim 4. I'm sure that compared to the Tories that Labour would genuinely like to achieve this. I just don't feel confident that they would even know where to start. I agree point 5 should be a absolutely no brainer
