Transfer record broken this summer? 08:16 - May 13 with 7966 views | Westcountryblue | Personally, i wouldn't be surprised to see our 4.5m transfer record broken this summer. You get the sense that while we 'flexed' on a couple of transfers last season (notably the Nathan Broadhead and Leif Davis deals) our spending & ambition was somewhat tempered by the amount of quality players who were willing to drop a division. I also think that Ashton et al will have been cautious in over-investing in a team of League One superstars who might not be good enough to mount a serious push in the Championship. Getting to the Premiership is sole objective of Gamechanger 20 Ltd and now we are in a position to attract players with Premiership ambitions/capabilities. Therefore, i think the second phase of their investment will very much reflect this and we'll see some fairly significant signings. Ashton's approach will be similar to what it was at Bristol City (e.g when he poached Adam Webster for £3.75m). I don't think we'll be setting our sights on Taylor or JCH, but instead looking to take players from impoverished Championship clubs and perhaps the odd signing from overseas e.g like Ashton did with the Diédhiou signing at BC. I fully expect the club's calculated, ruthless and 'relentless' approach to continue and it might result in the odd surprise sale this summer in our bid to upgrade the squad.

Does anyone clued up on our behind the scenes set up, know what sort of scouting network we’ve got across the continent these days? Would imagine most if not all of it is based on data analysis (I.e. Football Manager for grown ups) rather than boots on the ground watching games.

I'm amazed Broadhead's goes as high as that, what was the initial layout on him? Is it Prem promotion and international success that trigger those?

Think it was reported as £1m-£1.5m at the time - but yeah you’d think we are maybe only a Prem promotion from him clicking a lot of the clauses based on his start with us.

He's 24 and his career record is: Championship 0 goals, 40 apps League One 19 goals, 61 apps Leicester can put whatever clause in a loan agreement, no-one is paying £5m for him. |
I guess the 5m would have been based on him having a good championship season for Blackburn to activate it so Leicester just protecting themselves a bit there. Can’t see anyone paying more than 2-3m for him now.

Transfer record broken this summer? on 15:02 - May 13 by StokieBlue | Two points: - GC might want to go for top 6 this season before the offers start coming in for McKenna. - Hirst purchase clause for Blackburn was rumoured to be around 5m, getting him for 2m would be a steal. SB |
Although worth noting that Leicester negotiated that deal on the strength of them being a Prem side who didn't really need the money and on the basis of Hirst performing well enough in the Championship for Blackburn to want to sign him permanently. Neither of those things are the case this summer and whilst we can all see Hirst's quality, even his loan spell with us looks decent rather than spectacular on paper. My view would be that if it's going to cost much more than £2m then we move on to other targets. [Post edited 14 May 2023 8:48]

Whatever it is it will be an improvement on the old one; which I think was Romeo Zondervan and a fax machine.

I don't see that Hirst will have any other serious suitors. For most Championship clubs £2m is their big Summer signing, absolutely huge risk to spend it on someone unproven at the level.

Guess a lot will depend on whether Leicester stay up or go down. If they stay up, I'd imagine they would be less happy to sell him for £2m and be more happy for us to take him on loan and hope he puts together a good season in the Championship.

Transfer record broken this summer? on 15:34 - May 13 by ElephantintheRoom | Perhaps you need to take a loom at the championship table? Luton, Coventry, Sunderland…. Throw in Milwall and Blackburn =, perhaps even Middlesborough and there are ot many big spenders there - and a lot of recent risers from the third division. By ny reckoning there are 18 clubs i the championship who think they belong in the Prem - compared to only four in the third division. You also need to take a few reality tablets on the market value of championship players…. Nobody is interested further up the food chain. |

I only recently noticed the man writes lengthy blogs on our history through the PoP lens! You don't need to read them to know the insights into our successes and our standing in football; feathery tales channelled through green eyes with yellow constitution. But Norwich have two English trophies themselves you know 😂

You’re right. If we have Hirst, Ladapo and TJJ we will still need an experienced, proven championship number 9. KMcK isn’t afraid to bring someone in short-term to help the younger lads especially if they’re on a free.

If we have Hirst, Ladapo and TJJ I'd say the odds of us signing another number 9 will be close to zero.

Transfer record broken this summer? on 15:00 - May 14 with 1691 views | OldFart71 | I think there may be several departures of fringe players and those on loan. I think there may be a couple of additions and one or two loan players. But I think as with the season just gone the bulk of any spending may be done in January dependant on where in the table we are. Chance of promotion to the Prem and I see some powerful additions. Mid table with little chance of promotion the buying will be tempered.
Transfer record broken this summer? on 15:06 - May 14 with 1684 views | BigCommon | Wondering if we try and get Hirst on a loan to buy deal, similar to Blackburn's? Rather than shell out on someone who is relatively unproven at Championship level.. If so, then I guess it comes down to KMs judgment on his potential, as to what any final fee might be, according to how we perform..Imo, a loan to buy on Hirst, would be the sensible thing to do. Not just to protect our own financial commitments. But also, to keep Hirst hungry to do well here, if he really wants to be here.... Not convinced well be breaking any transfer records this Summer..Im more inclined to think in the 2m bracket, with potential, performance related, add ons.. But could see us going again in January, "if" we are punching high in the table and everyone concerned feels that the right player/s were available, to justify taking a well thought out risk. Ultimately, it depends what kind of plan GC had in mind for us, when they took over. Did they have a 5 year plan, for instance? That they'll stick to, because it's taking shape nicely? Or will they sieze the moment and push ahead of schedule? Might be, that once some dust settles, heart rates get back to normal after the euphoria of promotion. That it's back to a steady project. A few modest signings, assessing where we are in the Championship, and what we are truly up against, in terms of opposition and their resources. And what we'll need to kick on. Any mistakes get more expensive at this level. I dont mind if play our cards close to our chest, get the extra info we need, before going all in. I mean, there's gambling and there's risk taking. A well thought out risk, is not the same as gambling.

Does this underestimate last summer's business+ambitions? Davis was an equivalent cost to Clarke, we spent £750k on Harness and £500k on Camara. But beyond this, I remember much of it being spent trying to get Hirst and Taylor over the line. We had more success in landing the winter targets I'd suggest, maybe learning from the previous window, rather than deliberately keeping our powder dry in the summer.

More certainty means paying more money though. If Leicester let us do loan to buy, they're taking a risk. They're taking the risk that he's rubbish, we don't want him and they're stuck with a player whose value has cratered. They're also taking a risk that he does brilliantly and they've inadvertently agreed a fee that's well below his actual value when the transfer goes through. The way that they accommodate that risk is by making the clause relatively expensive for where he is now. If we complete the transfer now, we're the ones assuming the risk, so the price goes down. Transfer record broken this summer? on 07:51 - May 15 with 1384 views | CityBlue | If GC are serious then we need to avoid what Forest did and overhaul once you get promoted. Brentford prove you can compete without going overboard in year one and even to a degree so did Brighton - it is only now they are established that they have vastly improved/spent on their squad.
