Following the news that Chaplin has signed a new contract, who else do we think will be offered a contract extension this summer? And who do we think will be made to wait to see how they perform in the Championship?

From Stuart Watson's list below, I can only see Walton and possibly Morsy being offered a new deal this summer.

ITFC CONTRACTS

* Indicates known 12-month extension option in club’s favour.

Out of contract and negotiating: Luongo, Aluko.

2024: Walton*, Hladky, Hayes, Donacien, Burgess*, Leigh, Morsy, Evans, Ball, Camara*, Harper*, El Mizouni*, Jackson, Edwards, Pigott.

2025: Edmundson, Woolfenden, Ndaba*, Baggott*, Davis*, Burns, Harness*, Ladapo, Ahadme*.

2026: Clarke*, Humphreys, Broadhead, Chaplin.

McKenna hopefully.

Mckenna, walton, morsy, davis.

Morsy signed an updated deal last summer although it wasn't public and the terms have never been made clear. It turned up when the EFL published their list of agent transactions and is on page 18 here - https://www.thefa.com/-/media/files/thefaportal/governance-docs/agents/intermedi

It's quite possible it was just a change of wages rather than anything else.

Agree with this. If we’re as upwardly mobile as we want to be few if any of the others need to be tied down for longer until they’ve shown they can step up. Burgess and El Miz and possibly Burns and Edmundson would be the most likely candidates to kick on in the Champ, but time will tell.

It was just a change of wage and didn't increase his term, from what I was told at the time.

It's possible that it could be just a change of wages, but I personally doubt that we would have offered a wage increase without anything in return.

Walton effectively has 2 years with the extension. Davis has 3. I think we're OK on both of them.

Morsy is one that we could give another year to, we don't want him going into the end of the season with his contract up.

McKenna of course is the priority. Otherwise there's nobody in that 2024 list that I would be in a hurry to extend right now given we have the options on El Miz and Burgess.

I guess the interesting part of this is those whose contracts expire next year, and aren't really part of the first eleven, will be thinking about their careers a little bit. How easy will it be to get another contract next season if they don't play much this season.

So, Donacien, Leigh, Evans, Ball Jackson, Edwards...

I think we all think Pigott will go or will at least be loaned out somewhere.

Jackson and Edwards, at least normally get some minutes....

One of Evans and Ball at least, you would imagine would be thinking that they might struggle to make the matchday squad.

Donacien has been the bench defender since Clarke came in, so might get reasonable number of minutes.

Leigh is probably the difficult one here... played very little last season, although was decent when he was picked. I'd guess that he'd be looking for game time, or potentially looking for a longer contract if he's going to be a backup... Would we let him go if he wanted to leave? How easy would it be to get someone in who is in all likelihood just going to be a squad player, providing Davis stays fit?

... thanks for sharing these deets, interesting

Given the available 12 month extensions, and the players who we see being here for a while and having long term value, it feels we're in quite a good place

Those players in my mind are:

Walton, Leigh, El Mizouni, Edwards, Edmundson, Wolf, Baggot, Davis, Clarke, Humphreys, Broadhead and Chaplin

Transfermarkt has us with a 1-year extension option for Kyle Edwards too (also has Woolfie as 2024 with an option, not 2025)

Unless, as Captain, he had a "equal to highest paid player" clause, and the signing of either Luongo, Clarke or Broadhead necessitated an update, maybe? That's my best solution to that lateral thinking puzzle!

Based on our player trading model we can expect some players to be sold, either on prospective increasing value or because they are done for us. For the latter group there is no better time than late in their contract ie recover value but no need to pay up multi years.

Not sure I have this absolutely nailed but it’s a start!

Must do now
Walton* - why would you let him run up to last year?
Morsy - he’s the captain? You don’t let the captain go to out of contract unless mutually acceptable

Not essential to do now
Hayes
Burgess* - next summer sell now or extend with 1 year behind us in champ
Camara* - next summer sell now or extend with 1 year behind us in champ or following loan
El Mizouni* - next summer sell now or extend but depends if he’s loaned or a good offer comes now

Sell now (or by Jan) or extend
Hladky
Donacien
Evans
Leigh - why let him have a year in champ with ability to walk?
Ball - why let him have a year in champ with ability to walk?
Jackson - why let him have a year in champ with ability to walk?
Edwards - why let him have a year in champ with ability to walk?

Sell now
Harper* - otherwise loan to phase out of club
Pigott.

Possibly he was persuaded to take a big wage cut to join us, anticipating it would go back up when we got promoted (which we didn't) and so wanted to claim some of that to stop him being as badly out of pocket for leaving Middlesbrough.

Purely guesswork from me, but that doesn't seem too far fetched.

Or maybe, as captain, he is automatically the highest paid player? Perhaps someone new came in on slightly more than he was on at the time, so they had to up his wages?
