Lack of academy talent coming through.. 09:44 - Aug 16 with 4966 viewsWallingford_Boy

Doesn't seem like there are many U21s knocking on the first team door at the moment, the first time for a long time that we haven't had a few hopefuls there or thereabouts.

Humphreys aside, no other youngsters spring to mind.

Shame.

RIP Sir Bobby

Thé franchise have clearly signalled they are not interested in developing academy players - if they were, they wouldn’t have told Dyer to clear off, Baggott and Humphries would be getting game time off the bench - and Norwich wouldn’t be giving a disillusioned former youth team captain a long term contract, Simpson wouldn’t have felt ostracised etc etc

Franchise followers are far more excited by more and more signings than seeing home-grown layers… not to mention pointless loans…. And a third shirt.

We have too big a senior squad really for them to do so- in reality what can Ryan Carr do to get ahead of Lee Evans in the pecking order? There just isn't the opportunity when we have at least 2 players in every position.

The route into it now really is via loan spells and getting 100 games of senior football under your belt unless you are Cameron Humphreys or someone exceptional who plays in a position that you can get minutes here or there

Following Ipswich doesnt bring you joy does it. Is there a football team out there that operates in a manner that you could bring yourself to support?

We Ipswich supporters still have a weird fixation with the youth team, it's been a long time since Robson and Burley, and we're now in an era of big academies where anyone worth anything is on the books of one of the big academies and they usually do not filter down to clubs like us until they get released or sold. It is a different world. Our academy isn't the strongest as a result, and I mean no disrespect to our academy or players, but all the best young talent gets eaten up by the London clubs and unfortunately Norwich these days, and thus we are going to produce fewer players able to play first team football.

Under Evans, we did utilize a lot of youth products and the result was relegation and stagnation in the third tier. How many Ipswich academy products play in the Premiership? Downes, Pope (who we released) and? In the Championship, outside of Ipswich, there's Dozzell and? Most of our cast-offs end up in non-league, and the odd few that have made it ply their trade mostly in League One and Two or slightly lower, players like Kenlock, Dobra, Emmanuel, Lankaster, Bishop, Clements, McGavin, Georgiou, and Keough (ha!), the list goes on.

If we can produce one or two gems like Wolfenden and Humphries (and Clarke by extension) then it’s still doing its job, but it is never going to be what it was because football has changed.

The only times Ipswich Town have been successful is when we have had several youth players in the first team.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

How many U21s are normally knocking on the first team door? I would prefer that we had the likes of Woolfenden and Clarke in the team with Humphreys and Baggott coming through than high hopes of ones who don't actually make it.

Why not try saying something positive? Just once. Something. Anything. Or is nice reserved for Cambridge United (going well, aren’t they) and Norwich?

Do you define the 28500 people at Portman Road last Saturday as Franchise followers? Yes or no. If the answer is yes, do you regard them as idiots, given how you use the term franchise followers? Yes or no.

I actually think it does. The poster seems genuinely content with anything they can moan about. Discontent for them would be if there was nothing at all to moan about.

Not at all surprised you've been downvoted for daring to even slightly criticise the club, that doesn't usually go down well on here.

Agree with you though.

He's still recovering from his injury last season but he did look the part. Ryan Carr is one who looks like he might breakthrough but he's another one signed from another club.

I thought Ryan Carr was easily the pick of the U21 team v Sheffield Utd.

This!

Can’t imagine we were a desirable destination for aspiring kids under the Evans regime, particularly its latter years.

Yet Baggott and Humphreys did both join Town, even though they're both (I think) from Colchester, and when (for obvious reasons) it's much easier to get in the first team at Colchester. So somebody must have charmed them!

We've had El Mizouni and Simpson in recent years, so it's not been a total write-off.

I'd argue El Mizouni could have had a squad place instead of Aluko

Poor Tristan Nydam is only one year older than El Mizouni. I wonder what level he'd have been playing at now.

This was all in the ancient past. The top clubs in this country barely use any of their own home grown players. That is the game now. Chelsea seem to hoard thousands of these youth prospects and they will never get a game there, not in a million years.

Do you know if Ward, Nwaubeze and Buabo are still at the club? I have not seen them mentioned this season.

Yes, as far as I'm aware. Ward was brought back from his loan at Derry but can't see that he was involved at all in pre-season, so may have had a knock. Nwabueze had an op at the end of last season and seem to recall Buabo had a knock towards the end of the season as well.

Apparently Cambridge. I don't know whether he posts on their forum though.
