Where will we finish this season? on 14:49 - Sep 18 by LankHenners

I get the PPG point but also think it'll be hard for us to maintain our current form (or even marginally below it) for the whole season. It's easy to look at other teams and say they'll fall off or will struggle when injuries hit etc. but think it's a bit inward-looking to assume we'll carry on being great or that other teams' good starts aren't built on solid foundations.

There'll be a lot of tight margins and as McKenna said we could have won all of our games so far but equally if some things didn't fall our way we might have not won a couple of the ones we did. That'll be the same of other teams as well and will continue to be like that all season. Bar 1 or 2 there often aren't 'outstanding' teams but quite a few very good, solid ones that will always be in the game regardless of the scoreline, hopefully we can keep on being on of those.

Too early for me to judge whether we'll cope well with injuries/suspensions as well. A demanding schedule coming up plus the potential to lose 3 key players for a chunk of the early part of next year. If we're still in the playoff picture by the time February rolls around then maybe I'll think we're capable of staying there.

We probably need 60 points from 40 games to guarantee the play offs - so 1.5ppg which is quite a drop off from the 2.5ppg we are currently hitting (and obviously won't maintain). What our excellent start has done is give us a few points head start on teams that will be challenging the top six - 6 points ahead of Leeds, 7 points ahead of Watford. If we win tomorrow we are 8 points ahead of Southampton. Not to be sniffed at even this early in the season.

8th.

I think we are a terrific side to watch, and are such a well oiled machine these days, but the jump in divisions is evident and feel we will see more difficult days throughout the season.

We have started incredibly well, but things will occur throughout the season such as injuries, internationals and natural dips in form etc.

However, 8th would continue to show the incredible trajectory/journey this club is on.

Those who think we'll finish around 9th, who do you think will finish above us? I guess the relegated sides but they've all looked vulnerable at times thus far and it'll be interesting to see how they hold up if they hit a bit of adversity. Middleborough who many picked look fairly hopeless thus far. Coventry look okay and Sunderland are finding some form. Scum look flat track bullies to me and I suspect if they hit a blip they won't recover. Nobody else looks outstanding based on what we've seen so far.

If we finish 9th it'll mean we'll take around 50-55 points from our remaining games (9th place took 66 points last season) which is around 1.25-1.37 PPG for our remaining fixtures. That's sustained mid to lower midtable form for the rest of the season. Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic, but that would surprise me.

I think the difference between this and L1 is the fact that there are so many teams of good quality deeper down the division.

We are just games in out of 46, there is still such a marathon to go.

I personally feel the like of Leicester, Leeds, Saints, Sunderland, Blackburn, Birmingham, Preston, Coventry, Norwich and even Middlesbrough (as silly as that looks now) will have strong seasons.

Nobody is suggesting we'll carry on our current PPG, if we did we would absolutely piss the league with 115 points. But there's a huge area between our current 2.5 PPG and the 1.25 PPG that would see us finishing around 9th and, for me, I don't think it's likely we're going to seem sustained form over the next 40 games that over the course of a season would see us only amass 57 points. I think we're better than that.

Of course it's early days and we're seeing that most sides at this level are capable of beating each other on their day and we've done well to string together a good sequence of results when 4 of our 6 games were pretty close contests and could have gone either way (I put our one defeat in that category too).

It'll be interesting to see where we are in a month. A few more wins in that period and it'd take a pretty disastrous three quarters of a season to sink to a ninth place finish.

Middleborough already have a 14 point gap to overhaul if they are going to have a better season than us. I really don't see them finishing above us. I can see why people automatically assume the relegated sides will do well (although often they don't) but some of the other sides people fancy I don't see as having much greater strength in depth than us.

Playoffs.

If pushed for a number, then 4th. I think we'll be in a bit of a tussle with Norwich all season. Which makes a welcome change from recent years!

Tough to predict atm...I said top 8 pre season. If we are top 8 or there abouts by January. And we have a blinding January window like last season. Then we could push for top 6...
There's so much can happen throughout the division between now and April, though. Managers leaving clubs, players getting sold, players getting bought, loan signings coming good. It's just too early to predict where we'll end up, with any real confidence, imo...But I'm happy to enjoy the ride..

Midtable. I don't think we'll be able to sustain this form, but midtable will be fine for our first season back.
