Has it really come to this? on 13:07 - Oct 23 by blueasfook
I have been staying off these threads since the pile on when Israel were alleged to have bombed the hospital last week (all that "rage" has gone quiet now funny enough).
There's no balanced views on here, just the usual suspects posting pro-Palestinian nonsense, giving each other upvotes, and downvoting anyone who dares to challenge their biased opinions.
I think that's a bit of an unfair generalisation. I haven't seen one single poster who hasn't called out the barbaric act of Hamas on 7/10. It was an atrocity on an epic scale carried out by terrorists and I don't think anyone has said Israel doesn't have the right to defend itself either. But at the same time, it's perfectly acceptable to have an opinion on the humanitarian disaster that's unfolding in Gaza.. I really don't see them as mutually exclusive. Some of us are increasing our knowledge of the middle East from some of the excellent posts and threads, including I might say yours too. Navigating this delicate subject is hard but the inference that being against the current situation in Gaza is nothing more than pro Palestinian nonsense is unfair.
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

I really don't think this is a fair reflection of the debate on here at all and not really helpful to claim that it is.
I think it's the worst feature ever introduced on this board (IMO). Its just used for people to gang up on others. What happened to Moron of the Day? Now that was fun.

moron of the day went ages ago, so there's no point nominating yourself for it with this series of posts!
Here's another one who likes the downvote button. You were downvoting my posts on this thread and not even involved in the discussion.
Now you pipe in cos Phil has given you licence.
I was involved in the discussion before you even posted on the thread. I down voted you because I think it's an awful post and a clear attempt to shut down the debate.
For someone who has taken great pleasure in the past at down voting me on issues like covid along with your gang you really are quite a snowflake.
I think the conversation has been pretty balanced and civil, other than one edgelord who had too many late night sherries, and another who had a bee in his bonnet about the manner in which babies were brutally murdered.
I also don’t really use social media so I’ve not seen any denial/downplaying. I don’t see an issue with GB calling out Novara (no matter how obscure and cranky) since posters have included their links frequently on TWTD.

SB
Please show me a Covid post where I downvoted you.
I don't take pleasure in downvoting anyone. The DV button should be wielded with care and responsibility. Not just cos somebody made you cry.

Not sure why this has become a discussion of downvoting, I made no comment on it, just your earlier post.

I think if you're posting stuff which is deliberately inflammatory then you should expect a reaction to it. But you know that.
Yes I don't disagree. But as I said, I made a post on the Netanhyoo thread which just said we should wait for clear evidence before blaming Israel, and that got downvoted. I just went to find it but the whole thread seems to have gone.
Frimmers being a good example of where the man is played rather than the ball. He would get downvotes if he just popped on and said "Hi"!

I think a lot of that is good-natured and he takes it in that spirit. Obviously if it's intended with any malice then that's not acceptable.
That thread went because it became a thread about the thread with the initial post widely discredited.
That may have been the case re your post, but overall the discussion has been civil and balanced from posters with varying views on the situation. I'm not sure it needed fingers being pointed and claims being made in the manner you did.

Well Ok, but I will be keeping my eye on them downvotes.

Why do you have to dominate a somewhat mature debate with incendiary nonsense and name calling. It's as if you deliberately want to see posts get pruned or something. As for getting your knickers in a bunch about downvotes, stop being so sensitive - you've a long way to go before you beat [REDACTED]'s record

Stop worrying. Think of it as an insignificant boolean in a database somewhere with a foreign key id to a user table. There you go, you've fallen asleep now and no longer care.

Not wanting to inflame the debate here, but would it need to be a foreign key if there is no sorting or lookups done using that value, might it just be a plain int32 (+1 or -1) whose values are summed for a particular user?
Obviously can't use plain int as some users may well go beyond +32,768 or -32,767 and cause integer overflows ;-)

Isn’t he talking about journalists though?
This was his take before which is hard to disagree with. I don’t believe he’s talking about justifying denialism in the wider population. That’s not remotely his style nor politics.
If he had a serious interest in verifying the first-hand accounts, he could be doing it in the background like a normal journalist. Instead he's doing it on Twitter, openly casting doubt on horrendous testimonies.

That video clip in there is pretty awful. Its just the callousness of it all. Just cold murder of civilians. What hope is there?
There seems very little hope when the response is to commit different horrors on another set of mainly innocent people.
If there is any hope, it will be through dialogue and seeking a just and peaceful settlement for all. At the moment that seems a million miles away, just as it has done for more than half a century.
