Until then I will devote more of my energy thinking about 20,000 + dead Palestinians in 2 months not including the still buried ones, 2/3rds of which are women and children. |
Is it not possible to have sympathy for more than one set of people at the same time? Why the need for the constant attempted one upmanship?

Or I don’t know, post it in a thread that has 50 pages devoted to it? This thread is specifically about Jewish hate around the world, not directly about the events of October 7th or the Israeli response to it. Some people could just stay quiet if they don’t want to devote their energy to this form of racism but nah. They’re here with ideological position, conflating issues and making their points known. That’s exactly why Jewish people are actually worried that live far away from the Middle East btw. [Post edited 20 Dec 2023 23:17]

Can Phil/Gav not make this thread unviewable for you? There have been umpteen requests for you to respect this as a safe space for a conversation about the current lived experience of Jews around the world, but you repeatedly fail to respect it. Yes, there are unspeakable atrocities happening to the Palestinians also. But it's not their cause you're advancing by repeatedly trying to one-up this thread, it's solely your own. Shame on you.

And I would suggest that highlighting a form of racism that can affect members of my family is doing something positive. I couldn't imagine somebody with a wife who was black highlighting racism against black people being told to do something more positive with their time. Baddiel called it right with the title of his book. edit. edit. And the fact that I have to constantly justify this shows that there is so much more work to do. [Post edited 19 Dec 2023 23:22]

You don’t think visibly Jewish people being attacked in the street, Jewish school children being screamed at in their playground, Jewish businesses having yellow stars spray painted on them, Hanukkiahs in London being vandalised and all manner of vile antisemtism occurring with regularity in our capital city and other cities across the UK is reminiscing of what happened in Germany in the early 1930’s? Looking at the various replies to my post I see sarcasm, dismissal and even justification. Jews no longer feel safe in the UK. Should people be telling them they are over reacting Edit. “It’s a horrible event” is a fine reply if this was an isolated case. It’s not. I honestly despair. [Post edited 22 Dec 2023 15:03]

London 2023 is nothing like Germany 1933. I live close to the areas in most of your Tweets and it's not like Germany in 1933. These are all horrible events, the increase of which is terrible and hopefully they will all result in the culprits being found. They should be highlighted as you are doing but there has to also be some context here. You can't live through Twitter as you get a self-reinforcing view of the world which often differs from the reality on the ground. SB [Post edited 22 Dec 2023 15:09]

Politeness is overrated. It is of course important to raise every single incident of antisemitism flagged on twitter at any time but particularly so when there is a threat of a radical social democratic alternative domestically or conflict with Palestinians in the Middle East.....or so it seems!

The reality on the ground is that more than a quarter of British Jews have experienced antisemitic abuse since 7th October and 80% of British Jews no longer feel safe in the UK. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/uk-jews-unsafe-britain-hamas-israel-war-antis You’re dismissing the experiences and fears of a BAME community from a position of white privilege.

What you said is insulting to the vast majority of the UK and London population by suggesting that this country is even remotely comparable to the most evil and horrific acts of the Nazis. Tarring an entire city or country for the actions of a relatively small % of subhuman scum risks you becoming part of divisions that exacerbate problems.

I think you completely misunderstood the post. The spraying of a yellow star on a Jewish business happened in London in 2023. The sort of thing we saw in Nazi Germany in 1933. I look forward to the same people decrying my post taking the same attitude when the next "sleepwalking into fascism" thread goes up. What happened in Germany in the 1930's had it's roots in 2000 years of scapegoating and persecution of Jews. It didn't happen overnight. Seeing a yellow star spray painted on a Jewish owned business in London is a terrifying reminder foir British Jews. [Post edited 22 Dec 2023 16:38]

He has not dismissed it. Far from it. We have simply pointed out that this is not the same as 1933 Germany. To suggest it is shows a lack of understanding of what the position of the authorities there at that time was. Either that or it is to believe the authorities in this country are actively encouraging it despite the evidence. Of course, we should all beware that there are few short steps that could lead it to becoming like 1933 Germany. I would suggest that currently the parallels exist far more for immigrants generally than for Jews and I know you are very sympathetic to that cause too. I am sorry that the world is currently a scary place for people who are known to be Jewish. Anything we can reasonably do to reduce that has to be good.

So how do you square the circle of, on the one hand, saying that a politician demonising migrants is the "same as the hatred stirred by Nazis towards Jews and a few others in the lead up to the Second World War" , and on the other hand, disagreeing with me saying that spray painting a a yellow star on the window of a Jewish owned business, visibly Jewish people being attacked in the street, Jewish school children being screamed at in their playground, Hanukkiahs being vandalised and all manner of vile antisemitism occurring with regularity in our capital city is like something out of Germany in 1933?

Because those views being expressed in Government are the authorities and are reminiscent of fascism but individuals committing a criminal offence that will be prosecuted by the authorities if they are identified is not. How do you think that individuals committing antisemitic acts is reminiscent of the Nazi regime of 1933? Do you think the government is supporting antisemitism? There are some worrying views openly expressed by those in power by antisemitism isn't one of them. I am sure you would have pointed them out if they were.

Where did I say it was reminiscent of the Nazi regime of 1933? I said Nazi Germany. I even linked an article from the Holocaust Memorial Museum that specifically referred to "ordinary people across Europe contribute to the persecution of their Jewish neighbors?" When you look at the stats, it should give people pause for reflection. …49 per cent said that post-October 7th they felt “must less safe” living in this country, while a further 31 per cent agreed they were left feeling “somewhat less safe”… When you have a community in the U.K. that is feeling more fearful, that is saddening.

I don't think you honestly believe individuals perpetrating antisemitic acts is worse than the regime that committed the holocaust despite that being the gist of your third paragraph. EDIT: It is interesting that all the bold points you use to support that the situation is reminiscent of 1933 Germany actually state since the end of the Second World War which is the very point I was making. At what point am I "dismissing the fears of a BAME community"? I have stated repeatedly that the incidents you have quoted are vile and unacceptable. [Post edited 23 Dec 2023 15:22]

You are either deliberately misrepresenting what I am saying or I haven't explained myself very clearly. I never said that the acts are worse is worse than the regime that committed the holocaust. I've constantly said this is about the actions of ordinary people and not the respective governments or leaders. I said that the fact it isn't being stirred up by any government, as the German people were by their leaders in the early 30's, makes it worse. Not the actions. The idea that they are doing this with no encouragement. Re your edit. The reason people are referring to 1945 is because that is when we all thought this vile Jew hatred had ended. Not when it started. It really isn't that hard.

Thank you for such a thought provoking post. You put to shame those people on this thread who are either trolling or arguing the toss over semantics rather than condemning the extremely worrying rise in levels of antisemitism not seen since the end of the war. As yolu linked article says "Antisemitism is now on a level not seen since the Holocaust". I'm not sure it would be right to accuse the Holocaust Educational Trust of hyperbole Have a great Christmas. [Post edited 24 Dec 2023 14:48]
