Is it fair to ask questions about Walton? 07:08 - Nov 2 with 6385 views | itfc_bucks | First hand back and all, but made the wrong call for the opener, nearly spooned one that was straight at him in, which luckily cabined of the post and probably should have done better with the third. Just rusty?
Is it fair to ask questions about Walton? on 09:43 - Nov 2 with 1786 views | southnorfolkblue | We need to cut him some slack, but he’ll be desperately disappointed. He’ll know that he needed to put in a strong performance to show that he’s ready to claim back the no 1 spot. He failed to do that. His problem is that he needs games to get back up to speed. Unless Vas gets injured/suspended I suspect that he’ll have to wait until the FA Cup in January.

Is it fair to ask questions about Walton? on 07:51 - Nov 2 by IPSWICHFANITFC | He should do better with the third goal, but we all know that's a fairly routine save for him when he's sharper. You could argue the first goal was poor decision making and he could do better, but the problem was 20 seconds before the ball ended up in the net. The thing for me is he's not good enough with his feet and can't play out from the back the same way Hladky can. Several times last night, Walton puts his foot through the ball and clears it long - and I saw both Ball and Taylor drop in for the short option too. Hladky can play forward passes into midfield, as well as sideways or chipped passes to the full backs. Walton can't. That's the bigger issue for me. |
That last bit about chipped passing isn't fair at all. He did that every week last season. He hasn't done it these season because he hasn't played. He's got a lovely left foot, I'd probably be more concerned about his short passing compared to Vas, but not the medium to long ones.

His two weakness were shot stopping and kicking. https://footystats.org/players/england/christian-walton

Is it fair to ask questions about Walton? on 07:47 - Nov 2 by DanTheMan | First goal happens because everyone except Clarke in defence makes the bizarre decision to press one man and leaves him to cover 3/4s of the pitch. Honestly don't think Walton made that bad of a decision. He might have come out a little early but Wilson is one on one. |
Agreed. Burgess inexplicably went AWOL and was the biggest culprit by far. For a regular first team starter I can only guess that he has little faith in AT in that central pairing. Things can only improve.

His distribution improved massively last season and the way we are playing this season is pretty similar to the back end of last season, hence the continued success. People have short memories, there was talk of our use of 'La Pausa' last season with Walton often drawing the press before passing out. He was fine at it. No doubt Vas is naturally more of footballer than Walton but this narrative that Walton can't play out is nonsense, we've played out from the back since McKenna came in and Walton has been first choice for about 90% of that time.

Whilst true Herbz, i'd say the press is quicker in the champ and last night has 0 to do with this point, but is Hladky potentially better suited to the speed of the champ than walton?

3 of our 4 defenders left Clark exposed. Walton didn’t need to rush out and gift it on a plate though. It was a run of mistakes starting at the back. Walton very rusty but even if he was MOM last night Vaz is the No1 he not only plays as a 5th defender with the ball but is keeping everything out as well.. remarkable player in top form atm. Walton is perfectly OK with his feet, but he is always going to suffer in comparison with Hladky. What has been a little surprising this season is just how far Hladky appears to have stepped up all round. Apart from sheer physical presence, which, imho, Walton doesn't make enough of, I can't really see any area in which we would have been better off with Walton in goal this season. (And I didn't expect that to be the case when I heard that Walton had a long term injury.) | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Is it fair to ask questions about Walton? on 10:13 - Nov 2 with 1697 views | RegencyBlue | He was understandably rusty but when he does get an opportunity he needs to take it if he is to challenge Hladky on current form. He didn’t do himself any favours last night but not many did frankly.

Is it fair to ask questions about Walton? on 08:08 - Nov 2 by BlueStreak | I think we should be more concerned about the fall off from Clarke this season. Not sure what has happened but he seems miles off it. Too emotionally involved maybe being a local lad? |
I think you could be right, also, must hit him hard seeing Brandon Williams featuring more and more and becoming a fans fav in HIS position. I feel for him if he’s sat on the bench and the fans do that stupid ‘wooooooo’ for a fcking fist pump, poor bloke must feel obliged to do it, and like a cheerleader.

Not had a game in weeks and then put on the left side to make way for Janoi. I felt for Clarke last night.

Yeah agree. We won’t, shouldn’t, see JD anywhere near a championship starting 11, or even squad, based on lastnight. Looked every bit a player that has done his bit here and needs to move on now.

Yep, him, Sone and Ball need to be moved out (and probably will be) in January to help us replace with better quality. I like all three of them but we need more than those three can offer in the squad.

He really isn't that good with the ball at all. I'm just going by what passes the eye test and he can't pick a pass. He's not good enough for me, it's a ruthless game and if we want to keep on progressing, you need two Hladky's not two Walton's, but that's just my opinion.

Is it fair to ask questions about Walton? on 12:43 - Nov 2 with 1582 views | BigCommon | Don't think the first goal was Walton's fault. Not sure what else he could of done. He rushed out after being exposed by some sloppy positioning by our defenders, which a) makes the goal smaller, and b) slowed the attacker down a tad giving a defender or two a slight chance of getting back. It was the right decision, and he did well not to bring Wilson down or handball it on the edge of the box.. Wilson took the chance well. He'll be disappointed with the third goal, for sure...But you could put that down to a lack of match sharpness and rusty reflexes after being out for so long.... Bit early to ask too many Questions about Walton, for me. Best keeper in L1 last season. And he's got plenty in the bank, to be afforded some slack while he's getting back to full match sharpness.... Made a couple of good saves , too, last night..

Is it fair to ask questions about Walton? on 08:58 - Nov 2 by TractorCam | Yes it is, questions such as: What is your favourite cheese? What is your favourite Sheeran song? What is your perfect sunday? Anything else regarding his ability as a goalkeeper would be absolutely moronic. |
There's a difference between questioning his ability and questioning whether he's ready.

Of course it was poor decision making. He has to come out to close the angle but he should never put himself in a position where he can be taken out of the game so easily, on the edge of his own box, to leave an empty net. He was horribly exposed by the defence, but he has to make it more difficult for the striker than that.
