Luke Woolfenden... 12:55 - Nov 6 with 10585 viewssjg

Is he our most consistent player now? I can't recall him having a bad game yet this season.

Very very good CB - and wouldn't really disagree.

However, for me, it's hard to look past Sam Morsy - he is so consistent and such a high standard and for me the absolute heartbeat of this team.

I wonder if he has been affected by the sick bug.

But we did speculate which CB would make way once Tuanzebe was fit too.

I don't think this is a case of Tuanzebe replacing Woolfenden long term. McKenna did this last season as well, replaced him with Keogh.

If he was sick I'd have thought Edmundson would be on the bench ahead of him.

Think it may have been Luke Chambers that said Wolf will just adapt to whatever leave you put him at.
Looks to me like he’s spot on there.
Wolf has been excellent, both the CBs have.

Agreed.

I think he'll get dropped for O'Shea against teams where we're expecting to play a high line, but other than that been very impressed with him.

Morsy is the club's most consistent player IMHO. But to be fair so many players are turning in consistently high ratings now.

The McKenna effect, innit.

I thought yesterday was one of Woolfy’s best games. It didn’t make a mistake than I can remember and carried the ball really well. He was very good and perhaps can raise his game to prove he’s a premiership player.

I think if you get Woolfy motivated and concentrated he's a really good defender. He's premier League on the ball. I think he is short of pace to be a top club CB. I think it's good for his game to be under pressure for his place to be honest.

Why do you qualify with “if”??? He hasn’t made a blatant mistake for years. He’s our best centre half since JDV.
Once upon a time I thought he was rubbish and a liability. I was wrong.

Short of pace? Not something i've ever noticed. In fact I have at times noted how he has eaten up the ground in a race for the ball.

If there are any stats for this I'd love to see them.

No, I dont, because he kept making mistakes. He’s playing in between two very good defenders now, and it’s helping his game. He is also benefitting from a different regime of coaching and approaching his prime.

You of course want to start up all the gaslighting again. How about you just try and be an adult.

Nice thread to read, especially as so many had written wolfy off as as not being good enough before the season already started.

I just love it when he invites the opposition onto the ball before unleashing either a turn/stepover/ passing to a teammate. All whilst being cool as a cucumber. He can pick a pass, and beat his man - proper modern breed of CB.

If we are being really fussy he could probably chip in with a few more goals from set pieces, but in fairness we rarely seem to just whip a ball in. Usually it’s an elaborately worked routine to find Chappers!

Last season he was often the defender who stayed back for set pieces.

That's a good point, and I must admit I'd kind of bought in to that (I refuse to use the 'narra*' word here) idea. I think at times he's looked slow to react in the past (but not for ages), but I noticed a proper turn of pace in the Liverpool game a few times, which really impressed me - particularly a bit of covering on the near post late in the game where I did a double take to check who the player was.

Top player is Woolfy, brilliant start to the season. I agree with Chambers' assertion that he'll fit right in at any level.
