Cheer up everyone... 09:34 - Nov 8 with 7804 viewsitfcjoe

....we are just getting on the other side of the margins after a start to the season when everything went our way. QPR, Sunderland, Southampton, Bristol City we saw a shot hitting both posts, a late wonder save, the ball hitting Hladky in the face, a shot squirming across the line and staying out.

This is football, we do enough to win most games, but we aren't clearly better than the opposition like we were in League 1 so each win is big, each point is important and each game is a battle - even when playing the so called weaker teams.

This little spell of getting on the wrong side of things has seen us accumulate 8 points from 4 games since the international break (1 home, 3 away).

We are in a fantastic position - we've just forgotten as a fanbase that it isn't normal to win every game - Sheffield United went up last season and lost 11 games....we'd have to lose 10 out of 31 remaining for that......even if we do go up in the top 2 we are likely going to lose another 6 or 7 games this season

There isn't a need for a big over analysis - when you listen to McKenna he’s already a few steps ahead. We aren’t playing our best team each game because we need to get Axel fit for December etc. Just managing the squad now and hope we are in a great position for the run in again - if that costs us some points at this time then that is clearly a price KM willing to pay to get everyone fit and purring for the business end of the season

When I logged on this morning, this was what I could see on the preview of the board without clicking into any threads:

Jackson and Ladapo simply not up to it

My concern is the downward trend of performances

Robbed by the Ref... by BseaBlue 7 Nov 22:00
But also can't hide from some poor individual performances tonight

Down to end product tonight

What we learnt tonight by nodge_blue 7 Nov 22:51
We were sloppy in possession alot.

Is the end product the biggest issue?

We are still so incredibly frustrating to watch.

But that doesn't mean none of those posters are happy with how the season is going.

For those saying posters shouldn't be saying performances havent been great because..... even the players are coming out an acknowledging they should be better.

Absolutely we're higher than anyone thought in the summer, but we're there on merit after performing at a certain level, the desire from players, management and fans is for that to continue and rightly so. Just because we didn't expect to be 2nd, it doesn't mean we're ignore what got us here and go into a mentality of we;re plucky little ipswich. The bar has been raised and the players rightfully want to continue to reach that level, and the fans meet that desire too, it's not a bad thing, it shows how good it's been.

I don't know what people expected to see on a forum after a draw to 3rd bottom rotherham, after the start we've had when we've overcome harder hurdles.

I agree with your OP BTW joe in its content, and that's why despite people saying im fully negative im not, i'm incredibly happy with how this season is going, I just don't agree that the sites of people that need cheering up and I find there's more posts looking and picking out moans than there are moans.

Seen it mentioned elsewhere but something I think we'll be thankful for later in the season is getting the likes of Rotherham, Huddersfield, QPR away out of the way early. They're the sort of games I was worried about more than ones against objectively much better sides as they're essentially they're the 'tough nut to crack' League 1 teams but with much more threat going the other way and an ability to sustain some pressure rather than the odd breakaway.

Rather have them now than towards the end of the season where they're the sort of teams that will be really scrapping for every point to avoid relegation.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Yes, and how many times in the past have ITFC teams – and I mean successful ones too – gone to these places and got a going-over. Not losing away games like these is a big part of the battle.

You said “terrible result” last night.

Poster is saying “cheer up” to people like you.

It’s really not difficult joining the dots here. Not sure why you are even challenging it.

Frimmers reminds me of those players who commit a blatant foul and then turn around with their hands up and a shocked look on their face.

Performances away haven't been getting worse though really.

You could argue we were lucky against QPR, Southampton, Huddersfield, Bristol City, even Sunderland first game were were lucky to win in the end against 10 men.

People seem to think we're going to beat these teams 1-0 away all the time. no chance. this league everyone can beat everyone on their day.

We played OK yesterday, got a lucky second goal and they got a good one back. We should have had a penalty too so on another day could have been a win.

Too many fickle fans who think we're world beater when we win, and sh!te now or players are no good after we've drew (not even lost!!)

Slightly out of context there Joe. I have stated that our performance as a team was good enough and more than deserved to win the game.

However, there were some players last night that had a poor game. As Herbie has said, maybe that is in comparison to their usual high standards, but I dont see the isue with pointing out that some players didnt perform in their usual manner.

Reminds me of a pisshead on a Friday night desperately trying to hit the urinal. Despite repeatedly pissing all over his shoes he still keeps going. Goes to show - sometimes it's better to stay at home and destroy a sausage on a gas grill than go to the pub and drag everyone else down into the amber puddles by one's shoes.

Indeed.

I’ve stopped engaging with posters such as Frimmers and Wallers. It’s pointless as they’ll never change. They don’t really understand the nuances of football and only see things as black or white. Either we’re sh@t or good. Jackson has to be sh&t or good, there is no in between with posters like these and they over react as a result. If dawning 1-1 at Rotherham is a terrible result then any game we don’t win is a terrible result. It’s a simplistic view from people that aren’t very bright.

I’ve just watched the full game through. We played alright, especially second half. McKenna’s interview afterwards is spot on. Penalties aside our lot did more than enough to win it. We didn’t. It happens. We do look a good team. Support sounded great too.

The two penalty claims? Definitely for me, particularly the foul on Hirst. Swings and roundabouts.

Rotherham after a fast start played like the away team. They didn’t have much choice really but they managed the game pretty well. They’re going to take points off teams at home.

Look at their home record. They are a difficult team to beat on their patch. Anyone thinking that game was easy or it was a terrible result hasn’t got a clue about this league.

Agreed. Unlike say QPR or Wednesday under their previous managers, Rotherham looked very organised. The players knew their jobs and they hung in there.

I would add that their second goal was a heck of a hit too, as was Morsy’s.

Last season we managed to draw away at the teams that ended up finishing 20th, 17th and 16th, lost at the team that finished 19th, won by a single goal at 24th, 22nd, 21st and 18th, took 76 minutes to find a break through at 23rd.

People get way too het up about us struggling to beat bottom half teams away from home.

I thought Rotherham were pretty poor to be honest, certainly compared to just about everyone else we’ve faced this season. Maybe they’re still embarrassed from losing 2-0 to Sheffield Wednesday. Fairly limited and one dimensional on the night, we outplayed them for long periods but didn’t ask enough meaningful questions when in good areas. I hate it as a stat but I would wager our XG was low. It does show how far we’ve come though when we’re seeing 71% possession away from home in the Championship, 2 goals (albeit 1 fortunate) and minimum 1 perhaps 2 penalty appeals not given in our favour. On balance I thought the result flattered them, there were plenty of positives from our performance, we just needed that little bit of quality that Burns or Broadhead might’ve brought. On another night it’s an entirely different outcome.

The result always tends to dictate the narrative though, especially on here. I thought the performance was positive for the most part.

We had some decent shooting positions where we just had poor shots - I'm thinking Chappers, Leif and Morsy's soft/scuffed one at the end. Just need one of those to be hit well and we win the game.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Agree with this and Clive above. Rotherham were very poor and we did more than enough to win the game. The back heel one - two that Chappers and Leif played was our best chance of the game and most other weeks, he sticks that in the back of the net.

In the first half, Chappers probably hit shots straight into the defenders on around 3 occasions. Add in the penalty claims as well and ordinarily it would have been a comfortable away win.

I think we have to remain confident that if we turn up to away games this season with 70 plus percent possession and 13 shots, that we will win the game!
