Some blokes. Not all of us needed trinkets.

Erm, odd post. I've been pretty clear, whilst I am perhaps a bit frugal I'm by no means against having nice things! Just very expensive watches I find odd.

Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but there is no "might" about it.

George Hirst on 14:24 - Dec 15 by The_Flashing_Smile | You say that, but did you buy it as in investment... or to show off the fact you have a Rolex?! Surely if it's the former you wouldn't wear it at all? |
Houses are an investment. Why use them and not just keep them in tip top condition bubble wrapped from human touch. Rolexs and such are great as you get to enjoy them whilst knowing them are going up on value. They're not a collectable toy that you need to leave untouched to get the most out of them. Kinda see it like a financed car but one that increases in value over time. You'd use it. Enjoy it every day and reap the rewards later.

When I was in sales. Most people in the team would have a bucket list of items to tick off as they purchased them. Watches and cars were the most common. It's not a sign to others that they have money. It's self reward that your efforts have enabled you to get them.

George Hirst on 14:35 - Dec 15 by The_Flashing_Smile | Blimey, what phone do you have?! I have a Google Pixel for £30 a month. I don't know anyone who has a phone worth more than a grand, as far as I know. So sorry, no, you can't equate the two. Also a phone does EVERYTHING. A watch does one thing. I would also dispute it's "far easier and more natural to look at your watch than get your phone out." I get my phone out regularly, to check notifications, emails etc. - far more than I would look for the time. So as I do that regularly I know what the time is anyway. I suspect most people are like this. EDIT: Also, a phone isn't constantly on display like a watch is. Sounds to me that you just like having a flashy watch on your arm and are looking for excuses to justify it. [Post edited 15 Dec 2023 14:37]

I've got a nice phone that tells me the time and does all sorts of other things too, but actually yes, I prefer to look at my watch and yes find it much easier and more natural. I also think it's far less rude in company to glance at my wrist rather than get my phone out, a sign people are boring me. I wear a £40 Timex so I am just wearing the watch for convenience, not to impress anybody.

Lego is the best investment you can make. It’s increasing in value faster than gold and diamonds. It looks daft when you wear it though.

Hahaha, oh Frimmers. I thought you were bad at footy hot takes but that's hilarious. I actually live in my flat so you're quite right, I'm an utter hypocrite!

George Hirst on 13:15 - Dec 15 by The_Flashing_Smile | No slight on Hirst or anyone in this thread, but I've never understood the appeal of expensive watches. It's like walking around with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pounds just sat there on display. Given that all our phones have the time on them, watches aren't even particularly practical anymore either. They just seem to be an item of jewellery/a status symbol these days. None of this justifies the theft of anything. As you say, absolute scumbags. |

I’m the same. I’m not in the slightest bit interested in jewellery. My wedding ring is in its box somewhere (no idea where lol) and I’m not interested in dress watches or any other sort of jewellery. Rolexes have been performing better than gold, but there are better investment options out there. No reason why people can’t have them of course, although I wouldn’t choose one purely as an investment decision (and I haven’t). I think you need to be attracted to them as well (for whatever reason).

George Hirst on 20:59 - Dec 15 with 921 views | Vaughan8 | Can't believe some people are comparing a phone to a Rolex. I'm not in touch with the latest prices but aren't most Rolex's close to £15-20k? Its worth more than my car is anyway. Personally, I think if you walk around with that kind of value on your wrist, you're asking to be mugged. I would love a Rolex, but probably more as an investment than wearing around town. Maybe wear it for a special event.

I hear you on this, while I could afford a Rolex I've never ever thought about buying one. Equally I know friends who love their watches, my dad loved his expensive watches. A status symbol like being able to afford a Merc versus a Skoda? Equally I'm surprised no one has replied on the practical side of watches in terms of smart watches. I didn't wear a watch for a years as I had a smart phone. Then I signed up for a deal with a Huwaei phone which through in a smart watch. Now I'd be lost without my smart watch. For circa 300 euros my Glaxy Watch 5 does everything, can see notifications, respond to texts, use it to pay for everything via Google pay etc. The watch is very much alive and can measure steps, heartbeat, ECG, blood pressure etc. In fact just last month my mates watch warned him about his pulse and he went to his doc and sent straight to Emergency for a heart condition. (He's OK BTW but wouldn't have been without his smart watch)
George Hirst on 21:16 - Dec 15 with 893 views | BloomBlue | Rich people with expensive watch, has watch stolen shocker. I've lived in London for too many years, the less well-off target the rich and pinching watches is normal. We all know the rich have got rich off the back of the poor. There is a guy in my pub who bought a few fake rolex watches from an Asia holiday a few years ago. Hard to tell the difference from a distance, he loves flashing his fake rolex watch when out in pubs in London. To date he's had 3 stolen off him. He smiles at the thought of them getting back to the 'gang leader' with his fake rolex.

From what I've heard, when the pickpockets get back they burst into song and have a bit of dance before Fagin puts the Rolex in a box and Nancy tells them all to go to bed.

George Hirst on 12:03 - Dec 15 by _clive_baker_ | I think it's prudent in certain situations tbh. I lived in London for a long time and there were times I would be a bit selective about certain things. My wife and many of her friends still twist their engagement rings around on the tube etc at night time. |
When my wife goes to London, she leaves her wedding ring at home and takes a leather whip with her to ward off any muggers. She quite often stays the night in the capital as it’s safer than catching the last train home. You can’t be too careful.

That sounds great, but it's very different to the type of watch we've been talking about. I wouldn't have a problem with Rolex's and the like if they checked your pulse!
