Is the standard of driving getting worse? 08:48 - Feb 13 with 10463 views | geg1992 | Just saw a very near accident on the A14 where the Shell garage slip road joins. A white Hyundai joined without even considering a lorry in lane 1, which had to swerve aggressively, almost tipping over and coming within inches of hitting another car. Fair play to the lorry driver!! Seem to be seeing these sorts of incidents more and more often recently. People don't seem to understand that a slip road gives you no priority to the joining traffic, it's a give way!

Is the standard of driving getting worse? on 08:49 - Feb 13 by redrickstuhaart | Yes. Its getting much worse. People cant even be arsed to stay on their side of the road anymore. Everyday I meet people coming the other way who are just being lazy about staying in their own lane. Phones probably a lot to do with it too. Id add that whilst a slip road is a give way, any driver coming up to one on the main carriageway ought to be thinking primarily about how they can position themselves to make it easy for people to pull out. Yeah I move over to the middle lane every time I come up to a slip road, just seems to be common sense to me but a lot don't bother.

Is the standard of driving getting worse? on 13:06 - Feb 13 by Zx1988 | So-called professional drivers seem to fall into their own category here. Especially HVG drivers with their apparent attitude of 'what are you going to do? Crash into me?' as they pull out in front of you in order to overtake another HGV at 1mph faster. I agree with you - the targets set by employers have to shoulder some of the blame in these cases. |
Kid I went to school with went on to become a bus driver, and a driver trainer for Stagecoach. His words to me one afternoon, and this is verbatim, "The best thing about driving these, is at roundabouts, you just go. What are they going to do? Crash into you?" [Post edited 14 Feb 2024 11:28]

Most cars have hands free these days anyway don't they, or have the ability to have it? Seems mad to risk an accident/points when there's no need.

Is the standard of driving getting worse? on 09:06 - Feb 13 by DJR | I would certainly agree, and I wonder if one cause of bad driving is that people don't cycle as children and therefore lack proper road sense. And the idea of not cutting in after overtaking until you can see the car in your mirror seems to have completely gone out of fashion. [Post edited 13 Feb 2024 9:08]

That second bit grinds my gears (pardon the pun). Virtually every drive I do these days someone cuts in front and completely eliminates my stopping distance.

Is the standard of driving getting worse? on 11:30 - Feb 14 with 1557 views | baxterbasics | I have a very specific moan on this topic. Lane discipline on the roundabout at Main Rd Martlesham/A12N. So many cars just drifting across when turning off towards Martlesham Tescos, completely oblivious to my (correctly positioned) presence. Sometimes thinking a signal *after* starting the move makes it ok.

I think a lot of it comes down to the lack of roads policing now. The impression I get of some drivers is, If you are never going to be caught for it, you might as well drive how you like.

Is the standard of driving getting worse? on 11:36 - Feb 14 with 1544 views | Asa | Undoubtedly. As someone who spend years working in claims and investigating Road Traffic Accidents, it was notably worse after lockdown. The same applies to cyclists now. Pedestrians especially. Just a real general blasé attitude towards potentially being wiped out in an instant by this almighty machine. Many more people driving on their phones. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians with head phones in not paying any attention. Used to just be teenagers crossing roads glued to their phones but people of all ages now. A noticeable number of accidents involving pedestrians just stepping out after lockdown too. People at zebra crossings and lights turning red being hit by stepping out without even looking to see if the car was slowing down shot up too. But every kind of bad driving habit just seems to have multiplied over the last couple of years. I'd blame it on a whole new generation of drivers coming along and not having learned to the same standard, but the majority of offenders speeding, cutting corners, driving over the central line are middle aged men - just like me. Just seems to be a general lack of care for any other road user. I remember the old joke about a pensioner driving down the wrong way on a motorway and saying to his wife look at all these idiots. Some mornings I have had 3 or 4 near misses and naturally assumed myself to be the idiot, but with it being the one area I know best from many years in that industry it's been clear that all of the other drivers were in the wrong. The best one was going round a roundabout in Kesgrave. One bloke pulled out right int my path forcing me to do an emergency stop. He gestured to me despite pulling out when I was there to be seen, on a roundabout, within a sensible speed with right of way. Another bloke behind me nearly hit me from behind and then gestured to me as well, when he was failing to keep a safe distance. Both of them in the wrong and having a go at me simultaneously when it was only my actions that stopped me crashing right into the drivers door of the bloke who clearly didn't look and pulled out in front of me. Hey ho! [Post edited 14 Feb 2024 11:40]

Is the standard of driving getting worse? on 10:55 - Feb 14 by stonojnr | And I'm sure a drug wipe on that ultra aggressive driver would have shown Colombian marching powder as the cause. I'm surprised the police don't put more resources into it as it would be like shooting fish in a barrel based on what I see and encounter regularly and get their crime solving stats well up |
As someone was saying on the wireless this morning, the whole police : barristers : prison spaces : crimes dealt with equation is self-balancing - without serious investment in the whole lot (which hopefully we'll get after the asset-stripper party have been obliterated), you can't really deal with it. I suppose big on the spot fines might fund more coppers though? But scum like that need to be banged up for a bit as far as I'm concerned, so we need to build some modern, spartan prisons (and NOT privatise the fkn things).

I guarantee you that if you are traveling along a motorways and a lorry is swerving all over the lanes, the driver is 9 times out of 10 on a mobile phone.

Is the standard of driving getting worse? on 12:25 - Feb 14 with 1469 views | brazil1982 | I regularly drive Yorkshire - Ipswich and generally the A14 is the worst part of that journey. My main gripe is drivers not indicating, and it seems to be the majority now. Also, on a related note, cyclists not wearing visible gear / having lights on dark days. Baffling.

I almost got hit by a SUV near Moreton Hall Tesco Express car park yesterday. I looked, saw that there was no indicator ,so started to cross the entrance. It pulled straight in and i had to jump back to avoid her.

Is the standard of driving getting worse? on 12:58 - Feb 13 by geg1992 | Aggression has really got out of control. I was joining the roundabout by the ski slope and someone was trying to join far too quickly and nearly went in to the side of me. I put my hand up to say what the hell. Then, they started chasing me down Wherstead road, trying to overtake, beeping, shouting out of his window "come on then" etc etc. Got to the lights near the skatepark and he got out of his car, so I turned off left towards the station whilst smiling and waving goodbye. Such weird behavior, genuinely feared for my safety as he was so so angry. [Post edited 13 Feb 2024 12:59]

Had a similar incident in Leeds (on the outer ring road between Rodley and Horsforth if anyoen knows it)... however eventually the car speed past me in a rage.... imagine my delight when a couple of roundabouts later (Lawnswood - again for anyone who knows it) he'd been pulled over by an undercover police car....

Three or four years ago I was on pedestrian crossing in Tesco Stowmarket car park. I was looking ahead as I crossed but caught sight of a car in my peripheral vision and managed to hop off the ground as he was about to hit my legs. I finished up seated on his car bonnet. Took him a few more yards to brake. A man probably in his thirties with at least one child in the car. Obviously distracted by something but I don't know what
