At this stage surely more of a Brighton contacts story ?

A local (sussex) journo pretty much ruled KMac out just now, on 5 Live, because he's already in the Prem. He listed Carrick & Kompany as more likely, but especially Russell Martin...

Least it’s happened early, so if they are able to successfully prise McKenna away then we will have a new man in for our pre season.

But this could be an absolute nightmare for us, am seriously panicked now and just really hope he does stay - but this is one where he’ll have a very very difficult decision to make

Com’on Joe - you’re supposed to be the one that soothes our fears and tells us that it will all be ok.

£3-4million is so f’king cheap.

Supposedly his release clause is double the figure reported, which has always been 4 million...

It'll never be between 3-4 million... If it is then they'll have had our pants down, which won't happen under Ashton

They would need permission from Ashton to speak to him. OK, you wouldn't want to refuse permission and have an unhappy manager, but this is not Man Utd we are talking about, I don't think he'd be unhappy staying here instead of going to Brighton.

He has a release clause. They'll need permission from no one

We don't know the details of that clause - might only be for a top club.

I would be a lot more worried about this, if we hadn't been promoted...

I just can't see that McKenna would leave us for the likes of Brighton.. ok, they're a settled premier league club, but the aim of the ownership will be to make us a settled premier league club... Guess we will see just how much McKenna does "love it here" as he said only the other week, when we sealed promotion..

It's often been said that the release clause is double the figure that's been reported, which was 4 million.. are Brighton really going to pay 8 million for McKenna? Can't quite see it

8 million is nothing in EPL
Finishing another 3 places higher more than covers that in extra prize money.

I cannot understand why managers aren't valued more in line with players

I think that Brighton is more likely than Man Utd, but I don't understand why McKenna would leave us at this point. Perhaps if we'd not gone up, but having done all that he has with us I can't imagine him not managing us in the Premier League for at least a season, especially as by all accounts he loves the area, his young family is settled here and he has all the support he could possibly want here.

It's because clubs view spending on managers as non retrievable cost, because they can simply resign.

Whereas players can be sold on, regardless of results.

Has the club ever confirmed a release clause or is it just assumed?

a niche perspective

Much more of a concern than United.

If we were still in the Championship it would be a feeling of dread but to get us up is dreamland stuff so if he goes it will be with good wishes.

Hopefully he won't though and Ashton has already picked the bow out for his birthday present (Omari)

Why? They’re a smaller club.

McKenna has stated in the past that his two attractions to Ipswich was the history of the club and strong ambitions. Brighton don't have the history and are no longer progressing ambition-wise. If he was sincere in his statements (and I believe he is an honest man) I don't think he would be interested in Brighton. MUFC would be a different matter but is probably too soon. Club/team needs a shake out first.

Historically? No. By today’s standards, they are currently ahead of us. I don’t know why people can’t seem to get this.

Is Potter still being paid ludicrous amounts by Chelsea though, would he want/need to work? (See also Paul Lambert)

He is yes but for the Brighton job I could see him willing to come back into the game. Ajax is a basket case which is why he turned them down.

My understanding though is there is A LOT of bad blood between Tony Bloom and the Potter camp. This may be why his name hasn't been mentioned so far.

Why? Because they have spent more time in the PL? That’s all they can claim to be bigger and that counts for nothing.

This is Ashton we’re talking about. He’s not silly.

Widely reported as £4 million - but that was on the contract signed last summer- should be getting new terms and a higher buy out now!

You would hope it would be more than £4m. Premier League clubs pay £20m for squad players, £4m is a risible amount.

He also has a great CEO in Ashton, you can clearly see how well that works, he has everything he wants here right now with no interference, if he leaves now it will always be a case of what if..
