Wembley 2000: “Reuser….. offside!” 10:58 - May 29 with 6544 viewsMatt_Netherlands

Would VAR have ruled this out in the current day?

Would we have never gone up that day? Would we have ever gone up? Would we ever make Europe? Would we go into administration? Would the banter era ever happen? ITFC butterfly effect.

This image has it frozen at 6 seconds, as the ball leaves Naylors foot. Put it this way…. I’m glad there was no VAR!!

Clear and obvious error has never ever applied to offside decisions so it wasn't there in the first place to forget!

The 'clear and obvious' bit is and only ever has been for judgement calls e.g. a clear foul/dive.

Offsides are either on or off factual decision in terms of VAR use. So if the lines show off that's it, it's off.

I'm not saying the system works well btw. Just clearing up the myth about 'clear and obvious'.

The offside equivalance is " seeking to gain an advantage "... here he was trying to stay on side in his own half so not " seeking" anything just trying to stay within the laws! Personally open up the game... bin offside till the last 18yrds then you can have technology judge it if we have to have technology... I hate it all apart from the goal line stuff ... 1966? .. scrap that I hate it all🤣🤣

Yes, his legs - and feet, the things that propel him towards the goal - were in our own half, so onside.

This is what really bugs me about offsides and VAR, I mean unless a player is lying on the ground with only their feet onside when a ball comes into the area and hits them on the head, scoring a goal, why should it be deemed an advantage and disallowed?

The law refers to any part of the head, body or feet and I think VAR would have ruled this out. Yet I have never to this day seen anyone associated with Barnsley complain that is was given.

Can't believe people can't see that it's offside tbh.

But as you say, no one complained - and it was for me, level in old terms. That VAR would call it offside shows how much VAR is now interfering when it is making rulings on situations like this when the original call wasn't remotely controversial at the time.

If no part of a player's body is touching the ground in the opposition half, then surely he's still in his own half, which means he can't be ruled offside?

Don't have time to look up the rules, but there's often a couple of accredited refs online here who might give their views if they see this.

I haven't heard this before. My instinct is that breaking the plane with a playable part of the body is what's relevant, like in normal offside, rather than body contact with the ground, like in rugby. There could be a frame fractionally before or after this still, however, which more precisely captures the instant the ball is played and in which Rolls-Reuser becomes a millimetre onside, irrespective of whose interpretation is correct. Even today it's acknowledged that frame rate isn't high enough to accurately determine the most marginal offsides, and yet we pretend VAR offside is infallible. 😡 (We weren't letting a third in anyway aha.)

Why does a body part need to be touching the ground for it to be offside?so odd.

It does not. If that had been the case a player could be 20 meters offside and just jump when the ball gets passed to him.

More than half of his body is over the halfway line though…

Doesn't matter if he has a foot on the ground in our half

People are applying the current rules. I am fairly sure that in 2000 level was onside and there was no looking for whether the left armpit was ahead of the defender's right toenail. He would also have been deemed to have been in his own half at the point the ball was played. Leaning over the halfway line wouldn't have changed the fact he was in his own half.

I seem to recall looking over at the linesman thinking "was he off?" (I was behind the goal so in no position to tell.) As others have pointed out, we were 3-2 up and Barnsley didn't score again.

I was sat almost level with this angle and the lino was also perfectly in line with this - I doubt VAR would ever come in to play here. Also, the angle in the snapshot can be deceptive. Is it offside? Not for me. Close, but not offside. Besides, I think the Barnsley player got a slight touch on the ball as it is being released.

Some odd comments on here, plenty need to brush up on the laws of the game and VAR.

Clear & obvious has never been the criteria for offsides with VAR, hence the lines being drawn to try & get it exact.

As for you can't be offside if your feet aren't touching the ground in the opposition half...

And the law at the time, I believe, was level is onside with any benefit of the doubt going with the attacker - something about needing to be clear daylight between the two was the interpretation.
