I think that politicians on all sides should be able to go about their business without fear of attack (especially so during the build-up to a General Election).

Not at all. Nigel will probably fail to get into commons on his own merits for the 7th time? I think its that many.
Nigel's influence as a political figure is best handled out of commons anyway, he can speak unrestricted and continues to influence in this way - is he had to adhere to the rules of commons he might actually end up a little hamstrung. | |

The point in challenging bad ideas isn't always to convince or change the mind of the bad actor. It's for the benefit of any audience that might be paying attention.
I recall the appearance of Nick Griffin on QT. So many were opposed, concerned the platform would benefit him. But he was well challenged on the night by the panel and the audience, his racial world view exposed and picked apart. It didn't need milkshakes or fists to the face.
