WTF. I can understand them doing this to a petrol station or BP headquarters but why Stonehenge? This makes no sense to me unless they're going for maximum publicity. They will lose public sympathy over this stunt.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

It got you to read the statement.
If they hadn't performed their direct action you wouldn't have read any statement they put out today.
You've essentially proven that they do get more people exposed to their message via actions like this.
SB
The problem with this is that if they started kidnapping and killing innocent people ‘for the greater good’ then they’d get even more people exposed to their message. ‘What’s a few people compared to the future of the planet?’ Could be the argument.
Not the same thing? Maybe. But defacing or destroying cultural objects (which are mankind’s past, present and future not a politician’s or a country’s) or public/private property: not something I could ever agree with. Just my view.
No, I’ve not read the statement.

What an odd take. They haven't destroyed any cultural objects, they've thrown some flour at one. They're not about to start kidnapping and killing innocent people either.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I hear their next stunt to gain public sympathy is to kidnap David Attenborough and send him back piece by piece until their demands are met.
Maybe they could reassemble him with new organs to get another 100 years out of the chap. He’s a bit of a leg end. He’s worried about climate change, and it’s a shame that’s not where the discussion is. I don’t know whether stunts like this help or hinder tbh.

Raises awareness, as unfortunately there are many people who don’t care about climate change and others who actively work to deny it. There’s been hardly anything about it during the current campaigning period and it’s low on the priority list for many people. Yet lots of people can be convinced to worry about immigration. Well, climate change is going to lead to more migration.
They’re not winning many hearts and minds with this stunt, but it’s still the most important challenge facing humankind (and life as we know it on Earth). Or maybe 2nd most important after landing out transfer targets 🤷♂️
The suffragettes did many unpopular stunts in the days before women had the vote. Perhaps, in 50 years time, history will regard the Just Stop Oil protesters as heroes. Their strategy is effective in garnering publicity & while some of their stunts can be irritating, they don't appear to be permanently damaging objects or people.

It's just some old stones covered in a bit of orange powder. They will be fine, they have seen plenty of action over the last 5000 years.
If people are upset about a little bit of orange spray wait til they find out about the plans to plough a tunnel through the middle of the neolithic ritual landscape that Stonehenge etc sit in
See skateboarding on statue plinths. I'm sure our ancestors would be proud of this defence of Mother Earth.

Mine was just a general, personal opinion on how I see such actions. It wasn’t suggesting you were offering an opinion on the methods. Ahh the perils of writing on a forum.

"In a statement, Just Stop Oil said it was time for “megalithic action” and called for the next UK government to agree a plan to stop the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030. “Continuing to burn coal, oil and gas will result in the death of millions. We have to come together to defend humanity or we risk everything. That’s why Just Stop Oil is demanding that our next government sign up to a legally binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030.”
Oil and gas provide huge benefits to us all, particularly poorer nations and there is simply no substitute for many products made from petro chemicals that we all rely on/take for granted. If we stopped oil as they want It is hard to imagine the chaos that would ensue and the hardship. It is not the oil companies that burn oil/gas it is us and those protestors would likely be the first to complain when the result of no oil/gas occurs. Transition to new energy sources takes generations (take a look at history) and the current net zero drive requires huge amounts of fossil fuels to deliver any transition. They have not thought it through or understand power generation, the cost, or the process needed to ensure a sensible planned approach. I would like to hear one of them explain the consequences of simply stopping oil.

Shame people didn’t think stuff through from the 1970’s onwards.
Still, nothing to worry about, someone will be along to fix it.

I don’t think the things that evolve and wonder about Stonehenge will worry too much that for a couple of hours 10,000 years ago it had some Orange cornflour on it.

I'm sure they would be more alarmed about a tunnel being ploughed through their ritual landscape then they would be about some orange powder that'll be gone in a couple of days.
Luckily as Keir is suddenly outraged about the damage to Stonehenge and threatening the full force of the law against its perpetrators he will be putting an end to any tunnel plans once he's in office..

Starmer's starting to really piss me off. I'm thinking about withdrawing my tactical vote because of him and giving it back the the Greens where it belongs.

With respect, there are many plans and options to transition, the reality is you cannot do it by simply stopping oil as most people realise, or achieve net zero in a handful of years, simply impossible and no one can afford it either . Energy bills will not get cheaper for many years as transition costs are and will have to be added to household bills to contribute to infrastructure costs and wind farms are asking for higher unit prices as multi billion pound losses have recently been incurred by Siemens and Orstead. Oil and gas provide huge benefits that cannot easily be overlooked or replaced. I would not be able to tell you what would replace petro chemicals next week or in the next 20 years. India will add more new coal power capacity than it has in almost a decade this year, so the UK's contribution is lost in the global power struggles.
It will be interesting to see how the public will react to net zero as the cost and disruption become reality for many over the next few years.

Nobody's talking about their message though. They're talking about them being tossers.
Nobody wants to hear the message. Be polite and try and educate people - nothing happened. Be a bit more vocal and demonstrate - the inconvenience, and nobody listens. Block roads, tossers. Blah, blah, blah.
What are they supposed to do? Most people accept that climate change is a huge problem but you know, people demand to use their cars when they want and how they want.

Yep, I understood you the first time, it will all be fine in a few generations, nothing to get worried about.
People have been saying the same thing for decades, so, yep, I trust it will all work out.

Goodness, I pity you having to vote for that nonsense, I've got a choice between tactically voting Lib Dem or as the Tory vote seems to have collapsed, vote Green.

Indeed,it's not the oil companies that burn oil/gas it's us. I'm sure some of these protestors have no idea their phones, computers, medical supplies and a million everyday items require oil. Equally they will have no idea what could replace it to run a nation or even a household currently.

With respect this is complete nonsense, I spent last week attending two conferences looking at impacts and adaptation and the losses from damages are going to be collosal. The youngest members of my family will only be in their forties when the UK will experience 40% more winter precipitation and ~5C increase in summer temperatures if we continue with our current emissions trajectory. Remember climate change is a crisis of variability and extremes and those numbers are mean values.
