They tried that (lots of groups have) but nobody takes any notice. Out of sight, out of mind and all that. [Post edited 19 Jun 2024 22:12]

Fantastic. So Jemima and Tarquin just having a lovely day out. I feel it'll get colder already.

Just Stop Oil spraying Stonehenge with orange paint on 16:29 - Jun 19 by hoppy | SO "In a statement, Just Stop Oil said it was time for “megalithic action” and called for the next UK government to agree a plan to stop the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030. It said: “Continuing to burn coal, oil and gas will result in the death of millions. We have to come together to defend humanity or we risk everything. That’s why Just Stop Oil is demanding that our next government sign up to a legally binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030.” What does defacing Stonehenge, irrespective of whether it's dyed cornflour or paint, achieve towards that statement? |

but someone needs to stand up for the lichen
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

You are of course completely correct about the private jets issue. Time to ban them all. Don't worry GS Stonehenge will be fine. That orange powder will be blown away and rained off in days. People have been using it to make political statements and covering it in graffiti etc for thousands of years. Can only hope that all the people who are fuming about this will be just as angry about the proposed tunnel plans..

I'll take your word for it on the historical graffiti thing - never argue with a fella who knows his onions! On the tunnel thing, I'll be honest, I don't really understand the argument against building it. Mrs Ullaa's mum lives just past there so we go through it all the time (or do the Larkhill dodge, which incidentally take you through Salisbury Plain on one of the most beautiful roads in the country) - doesn't the A303 ruin the spot? Wouldn't it be better to have it underground? I get the ruination of what's underneath, but if they don;t build the tunnel, they'll never find out whats in there? Sorry btw - I don't want to offend anyone - an honest query... [Post edited 20 Jun 2024 10:53]

Just Stop Oil spraying Stonehenge with orange paint on 11:12 - Jun 20 by leitrimblue | Stonehenge isn't there on it's own. It's a small part of probably the richest neolithic landscape in the world. It's made up of a complex of neolithic ritual monuments linked through processions and lines of sight. It's that entire landscape that's important and needs protection. I worked on large infrastructure projects( mainly roads) in Ireland throughout the 'Celtic Tiger'. So I've been heavily involved with there planning and excavation, including putting motorways through large ritual landscapes like Tara (M3) ( Similar in importance to Stonehenge). The archaeological destruction is enormous. Obviously its not just the tunnel its the enormous groundwork at its entrance and exits. I understand your question about knowing what's in there but that's not really how archaeologists think nowadays. We ( well good archaeologists) are about leaving the archaeology in situ. The environs around Stonehenge are so rich that there excavation also can't be trusted to be carried out by commercial companies who work in rescue archaeology with time and monetary constraints. ( kills me to admit it ) and is best left to research based excavation without these restraints. No offence, were good queries |
Thanks loads - a more full answer than I could have hoped for, especially the bit about types of archeology - appreciated.

Thankfully someone did https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jamespreston01_well-youve-all-seen-it-saddening-a Text below if you don't have a linked in account: Well… you’ve all seen it. Saddening and maddening. The Stonehenge curators and I had actually discussed and planned for this eventuality over the last year or two, post Lintel project. I was quite happily dangling around in the sunshine at Lulworth Castle, when the phone rang! So, off we went! (I wish I had a siren on my van!) 🚨 Anyway, long story short. The stones are absolutely fine, and we worked all evening, same day, to make sure of it. …and I get that they’ve used powder, cornflower and dye, so that apparently ‘the rain will wash it off’, but, what hadn’t been considered is, the stones at Stonehenge are covered in many many rare lichen species. Some of which are potentially and quite probably unique. A cocktail of unknown coloured powder and water… would certainly kill or damage them. Anyway, we painstakingly removed the vandalism from the stones, without using water, so that we could attempt to save the lichens as best we could. We think it’s been incredibly successful, thankfully. Quick note to people without common sense: As a general rule, please don’t vandalise world heritage sites, ancient monuments, listed buildings or generally, anything that could be considered culturally or nationally significant!! ….as much as I appreciate the work 😂, I’d rather they remain respected and protected for all to enjoy! Theres plenty of politicians houses/cars/planes that you can go paint orange! …and as a bonus, you might even gain supporters rather than lose them. Cheers! Big thanks to Tristan Faith and Tess Clogstoun for answering my calls for help to round up all the gear and equipment I needed, and met me at Stonehenge within 2 hours of calling. 🙏🏼🚨 More on Insta: https://lnkd.in/gFBdrwR

Thanks James your amazing, would have taken the wind and rain hours to remove that orange powder otherwise. How can we ever repay you?
