Story in Guardian

WTF.
I can understand them doing this to a petrol station or BP headquarters but why Stonehenge?
This makes no sense to me unless they're going for maximum publicity.
They will lose public sympathy over this stunt.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

It's not paint, it's a cornflour based substance that will come off pretty easily.

They will lose public sympathy because the media (seemingly deliberately?) are misrepresenting what has actually been thrown at the monument.

As SB states, it is apparently dyed cornflour rather than paint, which should cause no damage to Stonehenge.

I think that even JSO are clued up enough to have made sure that this will create a spectacle, but no damage.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

What I can't understand is why don't they get asked how they got to the place did they all walk or ride a bike ? Surely they didn't use oil.

SO "In a statement, Just Stop Oil said it was time for “megalithic action” and called for the next UK government to agree a plan to stop the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030.

It said: “Continuing to burn coal, oil and gas will result in the death of millions. We have to come together to defend humanity or we risk everything. That’s why Just Stop Oil is demanding that our next government sign up to a legally binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030.”

What does defacing Stonehenge, irrespective of whether it's dyed cornflour or paint, achieve towards that statement?

I didn't read bluelagos post - it has an X page.
I use the Firefox browser with Noscript loaded and X doesn't like that as it's prevented from harvesting my profile so it stops any access.

It got you to read the statement.

If they hadn't performed their direct action you wouldn't have read any statement they put out today.

You've essentially proven that they do get more people exposed to their message via actions like this.

Yes, but having read it, rather than just hearing the news bulletin, it made me think they're even more a bunch of tossers than I did previously for doing it. If that is their aim, then it was successful.

You are entitled to think that but other people who read the statement may form a different opinion.

In the end many more people will read the statement and that is the aim and as I said, you are proof it works. The conclusion you draw from the statement is up to you.

That's because it's a well known fact the people who built Stonehenge used the first petrol powered engine. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have climate change.

It's just some old stones covered in a bit of orange powder. They will be fine, they have seen plenty of action over the last 5000 years.

If people are upset about a little bit of orange spray wait til they find out about the plans to plough a tunnel through the middle of the neolithic ritual landscape that Stonehenge etc sit in

Oil and gas provide huge benefits to us all, particularly poorer nations and there is simply no substitute for many products made from petro chemicals that we all rely on/take for granted. If we stopped oil as they want It is hard to imagine the chaos that would ensue and the hardship.
It is not the oil companies that burn oil/gas it is us and those protestors would likely be the first to complain when the result of no oil/gas occurs.
Transition to new energy sources takes generations (take a look at history) and the current net zero drive requires huge amounts of fossil fuels to deliver any transition.
They have not thought it through or understand power generation, the cost, or the process needed to ensure a sensible planned approach. I would like to hear one of them explain the consequences of simply stopping oil.

Yer not far off. Prior to the neolithic ( approx 6000 years ago) the UK was inhabited by mesolithic hunter gatherers in almost inaccessible deep forest. The people of the neolithic were the first farmers in uk and set about deforesting the country in order to carry out farming.

They don't seem to be very good at understanding how to gain public support for their cause. Certainly stunts like this gets them noticed and talked about, but none of it in a positive way. I fully support their cause (ie. stopping the use of fossil fuels) but not the way they go about it.

Raises awareness, as unfortunately there are many people who don’t care about climate change and others who actively work to deny it. There’s been hardly anything about it during the current campaigning period and it’s low on the priority list for many people. Yet lots of people can be convinced to worry about immigration. Well, climate change is going to lead to more migration.

They’re not winning many hearts and minds with this stunt, but it’s still the most important challenge facing humankind (and life as we know it on Earth). Or maybe 2nd most important after landing out transfer targets 🤷‍♂️
