All seems to be a bit quiet on that front.

Really hope not. Played a vital role last season with some great performances.
Not a First choice Premier keeper but would take him of Walton as Second choice.

Agree. It's an odd one. I get the feeling that there's some disagreement between player and club. If he does move on, it makes filling the number 1 GK position a priority. Also odd is among all the rumours of players we are linked with not hearing any regarding a new GK. Which for me, is an important position for us to look to improve.

It feels like some high-stakes brinksmanship on the part of him and/or his agent.

I may be wrong, but all I've seen/heard of Ashton so far tells me that he's not the kind of CEO to put a revised offer on the table at the last minute in circumstances such as this.

Pretty much where I understand it to be. The offer's on the table for him to sign. Get the impression his agent's not doing him any favours.

He can sign the deal and stay if he chooses to do so.

I think that's the problem. He won't accept being second choice.

In the interview he did back in the Czech Republic he said he's spoken with McKenna and was aligned with him on the plan for next season but that it was dealing with Ashton, etc that was stopping it being signed. That suggests to me length of contract or wages are the issue rather than any sort of guarantees of starting which would have come from the manager.

As much as I love Hladkys and what he was for us last season, I do feel we could find better out there, though it will cost us more of our transfer budget.

Walton is a better shot stopper imo. Hladkys is better playing it out which is to our style.

He can indeed. I would guess the reality of turning down the opportunity of being at a Premier League club may become starker when he returns as pre-season gets under way tomorrow.

With him being a free agent from tomorrow, how would it work in reality? Would be still be allowed to train as long as the contract is on the table, or would he be told that there's no access without having signed the deal?

He certainly is his own man. But to quote an ex-boss of mine,
"You don't buy a dog and then bark yourself do you?"

Hladky pays his agent to handle his affairs and to give advice, no point paying him if you aren't going to heed it. It sounds to me that his agent tried to play hardball over the contract and its backfired on him, Hladky himself said he didn't know why its not been signed.

Guess we find out tomorrow.

If he doesn't sign, then that's it as far as I'm aware. I don't think the club are keen to entertain continuing negotiations. It's take what's on offer or move on. He clearly doesn't want to leave, he's said that several times now, so it's a case of whether he and his agent are willing to take what's on offer.

Can understand club not wanting to let negotiations drag on any further -could mean us missing out on suitable replacement/s.

Club must also be pretty confident of being able to land a decent replacement, and are not going to go far into preseason without it being sorted. I wonder if they are further along the road with Rushworth than we've been told so far.

Perhaps. Walton is here, of course, and they'd be confident of getting something done between now and the start of the season whatever the current situation with potential targets.

I’m surprised at how passive Hladky has been. Sounds like he wants to stay, so if I was him I’d be reminding my agent who he works for and telling him to get it done. But Hladky’s treating it as though it’s in the lap of the gods. I’ve seen that with other players too. It seems really odd when you’re on a high and then you potentially let your own agent sabotage things.
