Shenanigans on the agent's part, perhaps? The higher JP's share of the combined fee, the more his payout will be.

A sneaky back-channel word to Villa suggesting that JP would be keen to do a deal with them if they activate their matching clause, in the hope of triggering the bidding war he's clearly been so keen to get going between Town and Barça/Palace/Everton and now Villa.

Any uptick in the sell-on would be relative peanuts to Villa, but massive to him if he stands to lose his cash cow after this move.

You're reading far too much into it.

Barca have never been interested.

I know - but it hasn't stopped JP's agent trying to convince everyone otherwise.

If Emery is "prioritising a move for him" why has he left it till the last minute?

Because they had until today to get the bid in. Why enter the race beforehand and potentially up the price unnecessarily?

He doesn't need to be passed notes - Philogene's agent will be outside the NATO summit for a photoshoot, and I'm sure he'll fill him in...

Definitely. We should go for players nobody else wants.

That would be taking the Evans transfer policy to its nth degree. During that era, we went for players that nobody else wanted /apart from Colchester/, who would gladly take them off our hands even once they're past it.

The price can be upped anyway... at any point today. I don't see as it makes much difference.

They will have known this was a possibility and entered into the negotiation regardless.

Can't blame Philogene for wanting to hear all the options before he decides.

Certain fans reaction to this is interesting though. Fine for KM's agent to d1*k us around for 2 weeks, KM was just weighing up all the options...not sure why some of those same people are less tolerant of the player doing the same here?

Lol is it interesting though really?... One of the was Kieran f**kin McKenna would be your answer to that.

But why get it upped sooner?

Indeed, and if he rates him so highly why did he sell him last summer when he could have loaned him? It doesnt seem like great business to sell a player for £5m and then buy him back for three times the amount a year later. Very strange behaviour from villa.

My feeling is that they were hoping for a bidding war, which never materialised. They've now taken matters into their own hands in the hope of getting a better fee and sell-on.

I don’t see how this will increase their sell-on, fees have already been agreed with us, and Villa have matched that. We aren’t going to just offer more money after our bid has already been accepted.

The only way I see Villa making more money here (ish) is by signing him for £12.6M (inc 30% discount) and then selling to us for £18M, and then they can amortize the fee.

Not sure if that’s even allowed though. Like I said before, imagine they fancy him at £12.6M and he ticks a homegrown player box for the Champions League.

Would imagine looking at their players he would struggle to get regular minutes there. Depends I guess on how he backs himself but I can’t imagine currently if everyone is fit for Villa he’ll get many Premier league minutes there. Of course he may well get a better deal for himself but a big risk personally I feel for his career to be a bit part player. Just my thoughts. Think he’ll end up where he can get the most football in the end. That would be here or Everton, maybe Palace but they seem to have eyes elsewhere.

I think you are entirely correct here.

Also, your last sentence is the reason he might choose us over them. There he is just an option and ticks a box. Here, he is as good as can be guaranteed a first team regular place.

Absolutely, let’s not forget the reason he left Villa originally was for more game-time, so he might still prefer a move here for that reason.

If he does end up at Villa, the fact that we’re willing to pay £18M for another winger should mean that we’ll still be able to attract somebody of similar quality.

according to Sky, we are set to complete Greaves and Delap. if we announce Greaves, I think we can probably safely presume Philogene is off the table.

To show the player you're interested before he's courted/his head is turned by other parties? It may be that he's bought into the Ipswich project and Villa have left it too late in that regard.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Possibly, or it could just mean that Villa’s involvement means there’s no benefit to us in linking the two deals.

Could it not just mean that villa want us to increase our bid in hope that they don't match it and therefor villa make more money from the sell on.

Get what you’re saying but conversely he may have known all along that Villa were going to exercise their option.

Not sure why we would raise our bid. Boils down to where Philogene wants to play next season now, simple as that.
