John Stones 09:29 - Jul 16 with 3956 views | chicoazul | Is he the greatest English player of all time? 6 league titles 2 FA cups 2 league cups 1 champions league with 2 finals. Played in 2 euro finals and a WC semi. Played in the Nations League semi final. Pretty good case there. Amazing head of hair on the man too. [Post edited 16 Jul 2024 9:30]

Pretty hard to be the standout player of a generation at centre back!
John Stones on 09:33 - Jul 16 with 2965 views | Cheltenham_Blue | If you go by yesterdays chat, no, because he's not won anything internationally. I'd be inclined to agree. It's Bobby Moore without question.

John Stones on 09:35 - Jul 16 with 2948 views | _clive_baker_ | Clearly not our greatest player of all time, he's not even our greatest defender. Excellent player though and our only defender right now who could make a case for being 'world class' IMO, depending on your definition. I think he gets in most teams in the world.

No comparison in terms of trophies. If the World Cup offsets that then only one of those 11 players is the best English player ever.

Consistently picked by arguably the best domestic manager ever and arguably the best England manager ever. Redefined the role of a CB in the last couple years by playing into midfield.

He was a class above at Everton too to be fair. He's been one of England's most consistent performers for nearly a decade too. As the original poster says, loads of accolades and has been a staple of that Man City team which has won pretty much everything at club level. - 6 x Premier League titles. - 1 x Champions League. - 4 x FA Cups. - Other lesser trophies. Not quite a big of a hot take as some are making this out to be, but I wouldn't have him at the best ever. It's one of those massively subjective things though. Take into account time period, position, teams played, individual stats, opposition played etc etc. [Post edited 16 Jul 2024 10:28]

But he's not though, is he? At best he's in rotation with Dias, Ake etc. But the fact he started the last 7 league games on the bench despite being fit suggests he isn't 1st choice

He said "the greatest English player of all time" not "who has the most trophies". Of course it's a ridiculous hot-take.

Depends if you take winning trophies as a benchmark (and being a prime player in those trophy wins).

Absolutely this. Add in that the PL is designed to be uncompetitive, Leicester the one exception. It can only be won by just a few clubs. It wasn’t always that way.

No, because it's a team game, there's an entire squad that contributed to winning those trophies.

Beckham, Bobby Moore, Paul Scholes, Shilton, Banks and probably Kane are all feeling a bit left out here
