John Stones 09:29 - Jul 16 with 3960 views | chicoazul | Is he the greatest English player of all time? 6 league titles 2 FA cups 2 league cups 1 champions league with 2 finals. Played in 2 euro finals and a WC semi. Played in the Nations League semi final. Pretty good case there. Amazing head of hair on the man too. [Post edited 16 Jul 2024 9:30]

Beckham is certainly up there in the top 20 greatest England players of all time. A few hundred above John Stones!

That cheers me up in my old age, reminding me that I used to be able to run faster than Mark Fish.

But equally nowhere near the best England player ever. Beckham had a really sweet right foot but he couldn’t tackle, head the ball and his self discipline was nonexistent.

His self discipline was superb. The hours and hours practicing freekicks until it was too dark to see the goal spring to mind. I think the Ronaldo incident is doing a lot of heavy lifting in your statement there.

Without a doubt. I'm not sure what the question is any more, but they'd certainly be in an England's greatest squad.

OK, may have gone heavy saying ‘nonexistent’ but he was no angel. Amongst numerous sending offs in Spain, one was for calling a match official the son of a who*e and on international duty he gave England fans the finger during one match. Yes, a good player but I also think he benefited hugely from an incredible marketing brand at times.

But no relative success with his country whatsoever.

What success has Stones had with his country? Because if we're including runners-up at international level are we now including runners-up at club level too?? Let's be honest Stones is not one of England's greatest ever players. He has played well in good teams, but that doesn't define a great. His individual honours are nowhere near some of the people he has played alongside in an England shirt including Kane and Rooney

Just seen Kyle Walker was named in the Euros team of the tournament Pretty much an identical list of trophies to Stones plus now considered one of the best players at a tournament Any reason you're not putting him forward as England's greatest?* *not that I think he is, but probably thought of more highly in his position than Stones ever has been

Depends how we’re defining ‘best’. By the metric of international tournament success, Johan Cruyff was crap. Which is obviously not the case, as he’s one of the all time greats. Messi only just sneaked into that list at his last attempt. Best player shouldn’t mean most decorated, it should mean how good they were as a player. It’s what it say on the tin - best player. Often the best ones help to carry their teams to trophies, but not always.

Stones has redefined a centre back in the last couple of years by playing in CM, and also played pretty well in Walkers position. Pep himself once said Walker can’t really do what Stones can in middfield or that defensive hybrid role.

Beckham was probably the best dead ball specialist England have ever had, but as an all round player he was limited. He had no pace, and for someone who played out wide for most of his career , didn’t have the ability to dribble and beat his man. Real Madrid bought him for the shirt sales and merchandise as much as his ability. Top 20 feels about right. Stones in my opinion actually played his best football as a DCM the year City won the Champion League. I think it’s fair to say he’s amongst the best English players, City would certainly have replaced him pretty rapidly if he wasn’t. [Post edited 16 Jul 2024 14:52]

Kevin Beatie (miss spelt because this thing will not let me do it properly). Big Kev. Played in a team full of internationals and still stood out. He could tackle, jump and head as well as Stones. But he could also dribble. Add to that he was the fastest bloke on the pitch. Think of Stones and Saka combined in one player. They say the one thing defenders hate is someone running at them with the ball. Let me tell you midfielders are not too happy about it either. Heart of a lion. Stones not fit to clean his boots.

I realise that you know my list was not meant to be exhaustive - otherwise such as Vivian Woodward, Charlie Buchan, Billy Wright and Wilf Mannion of Fantasy Football League fame might have all snuck in ahead of Mr Stones.

Was going to say Scholes... 11 league titles, 2 Champions League titles, 3 fa cups (surprisingly low). @OP: If we are talking about ability, then definitely not. If we are talking about success, then towards the top, but not the best.

Beattie was a better left back than centre back.

I have to disagree with you there. Beattie could actually have played just about anywhere and been good at it, but in the middle of defence alongside the great Allan Hunter he was awesome. One of the very few players I’ve seen who when he got the ball, the crowd drew a collective breath. Stones doesn’t even come close to Beattie.
