It does feel like we started the off-season brightly when it comes to transfers but the other teams are catching us up and passing us now.

It's increasingly feeling like we took the low-hanging fruit in June and are now scratching around chasing our tail for other targets.

Yep, that would be a brilliant signing for any bottom half prem team.

Played for Martin at MK Dons.

...and slightly cynical I'd say that the reason we got so much business done early was because we overpaid for the majority of our signings and now we are struggling to compete financially.

There appears to be better value out there now, but perhaps we've shot our load too early.

Brighton are in for him and he’s more lukely to go there than saints, even though he played for Martin at MK Dons.

Tough one isn't it

Ashton/McKenna were being lauded early on for getting targets in with plenty of time before the season starts so they can get up to speed with our style of play

But in order to do that business we really had to push the boat out

Hutch price, and probably Greaves look like reasonable prices when you see what’s being spent. Delap the jury is still out, but I think we had so many bodies to get done that we simply HAD to go early.

Still some work to do, but we’ve undeniably added quality versus where we started. Leicester have weakened - now we just need Toney and Solanke to move on to one of the big 6!

I don't think we've overpaid for anyone, except maybe Delap. But given his age, £3m a year over 5 years isn't even a bad deal either providing he fulfils most of his potential.

I'm not even sure if it's a financial thing. I *know* we have the money there to probably mirror what we've spent already. My fear is our recruitment 'network' not being wide enough to tap into opportunities fast enough. Without an independent Head of Recruitment, things run the risk of becoming an echo chamber.

Matt OReily would be a massive signing. With him and Downes they really so have a great midfield. Really wish we were in for him

Perhaps not overpaid for anyone (the jury will be out for a while on that!) but we definitely went big early!

It was always going to be a slow summer with the Euro's and then the big clubs going away for their pre-seasons. You'd imagine with the bulk (if not all) of them back now, things will start to get going.

Not sure I entirely agree with that.

I can't believe Celtic are willing to sell him for £18m. And Blackburn wants up to £15m for Szmodics???

Szmodics scored a lot of goals in a better league to be fair. Glasgow derby aside, the opposition in the SPL is League One quality at best.

It does intrigue me how much it is lack of recruitment network and how much of it is McKenna's choosing and wanting to be sure of integration, character etc. If we are talking overseas opportunities then the world has never been smaller with technology, data analytics etc. We do seem to be being very, very careful.

I had thought of him as a potential deal earlier in the summer but was linked with bigger clubs than us so didn’t say anything but a good player. Whether he fits into what McKenna would want, I don’t know.

Low hanging fruit is very disrespectful to the players we’ve signed.

I don’t disagree: we really really need a centre midfielder and a couple other attacking options.

Think Delap's fee is the only one that looks a bit of an overpay really.

Reality is that for most prospective players we're 20th out of 20 in terms of the relative status of Premier League clubs. All things being financially equal, they'll probably go elsewhere. Getting out of the blocks early and getting business done before competitors had fully decided what they wanted was probably wise, even if we did pay a little premium for getting things completed early.

Lack of signings is a worry. Cant help but think Ashton has to much on his plate with all the stadium updates etc and not sure if Luke Werhun is up to it

Think it's really difficult to judge without knowing what's going on inside. Are we missing out on signings or waiting for our targets to become available. The big Prem clubs are only just back from their US preseason tours and settling down on their squads. Think loans, etc will probably start to happen soon.

Once transfers get to a certain stage, Ashton deals with them himself rather than Werhun. Not as much for him to do / sign off day to day on the stadium compared to transfers.
