Lauren Edwards MP: chortle on 16:25 - Aug 8 with 8971 views | ArnoldMoorhen | Those are utterly disgraceful Tweets and, in the current climate especially, it is important that Starmer acts quickly to have her suspended from the Parliamentary Party. He absolutely can't afford to have "One rule for them and another rule for me and my mates". I don't know what the statute of limitations would be for online hate speech, or inciting racial hatred, but I would expect a flurry of complaints to go in to the Police about this.
Lauren Edwards MP: chortle on 16:29 - Aug 8 with 8916 views | textbackup | Best one is that Kent councillor stating ‘cut their throats’ and getting a massive cheer, at a peaceful rally… Or that Narinder Kaur calling for mass riots when George Floyd was murdered.

Lauren Edwards MP: chortle on 16:31 - Aug 8 with 8886 views | Dubtractor | Labour obviously had the same candidate vetting agency as reform. Untenable for her to remain a labour mp in my opinion, let alone when you take into account events of the last week.

On the evidence so far, is there any reason to doubt a robust and swift response?

I wouldn't expect there to be. Depending on when the Tweets were posted, what the law was at the time, and the statute of limitations that would apply to the relevant law or laws. It would be disastrous for the credibility of the Criminal Justice system if the statute of limitations did rule out any legal response to these tweets. I voted Labour at this, and previous, General Election's, so am not looking to bash Starmer on this. I hope that he shows sufficient leadership to act as swiftly and decisively as he can within the Party structures, and to ensure that the Police and CPS approach this case on its merits, without fear or favour. Questions need to be asked of the vetting process for her selection as a candidate, too. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I saw many peaceful rallies on the news. Was lovely seeing people spread a message of love as opposed to hate. Was just on social media that I saw that councillors disgusting speech. Don’t tell me you agree with him? Or her for wanting riots previously?!

On your last point, I don't believe it should be the business of police in these cases, unless incitement or an imminent threat is being posed. That way chaos lies. The court of public opinion is enough, and her party can decide what it means for her standing there.

which law do you think those tweets might brake? i'm not defending the tweets but it's some leap to suggest they were criminal.

I don't trust politicians to be the gatekeepers of what online media I can and can't access. This isn't China. Edit - I have no problem with people being held accountable as individuals if they break the law (incitement, threat). [Post edited 8 Aug 2024 16:47]

Some people are discussing censorship of social media, or, at the very least, the designation of online platforms as analogous to publishers of traditional media, and legally responsible for all content. The Republic of Ireland is currently moving towards this position, and it is being raised as a serious discussion point here, as a result of Musk's approach to owning Twitter. Just a reminder that he sacked all of the Online Safety/content moderation staff at an early stage of his ownership. The "publisher" designation for online platforms would be a huge shift if it happens, and an absolute nightmare for sites like TWTD. But one of the richest people in the world is pushing the line that Civil War is inevitable in the UK, and scatter-gun retweeting material that could invite further violence.

I am not a lawyer, but generally the attachment of a swear-word to an ethnicity or nationality has been regarded as racially aggravated hate speech. As I have said, I don't know which relevant laws were in place at the time of the original tweets, nor the statute of limitations that would apply.
Lauren Edwards MP: chortle on 16:53 - Aug 8 with 8424 views | Mullet | What she’s done is unacceptable and probably means a by election doesn’t it? The fact that an MP is having these dragged up from a decade ago by the likes of Harwood as a distraction is very telling though.

that's not right. speech can be offensive and sweary and you can attach swear-wrods to all sorts of descriptions and categories without getting anywhere near to being illegal. [Post edited 8 Aug 2024 17:03]

genuine question, if you submitted jewish or muslim for estonian, would that change it?

Lauren Edwards MP: chortle on 17:07 - Aug 8 with 8110 views | jayessess | Think a lot of the new Labour candidates are very low quality, largely because they prioritised loyalty to the main right-wing faction on the party's NEC over everything else. A lot of them are also quite unpleasant bigots, happy enough to traffic in a variety of racisms when they feel like it. But I've never thought anyone's interests were particularly served by the modern tendency to dig through decade-old social media for gotchas. It baffles me that any professional political organisation managing a PPC's possible transition from anonymous citizen to public figure wouldn't have them delete all social media posts older than 5 years as a matter of course (and as part of their duty of care). Would also say that people posting false information that leads to violence is a fundamentally different order of problem for society.

it has to depend on context. are you expressing hatred towards someone BECAUSE of their ethnicity or nationality, or are you expressing hatred / dislike for someone for other person specific reasons and are simply describing them as you express that dislike? does she dislike them because they're estonian or does she dislike them because they won't get out of her flat? expressions of the former might get you into trouble - but that's really not how i read her tweet.
