The idea is to keep putting anti-racist messages out there, constantly, in many different forms, so it becomes ingrained in society. Yes, it's probably too late for people of a certain age like the OP, but if young kids are constantly fed messages that racism is wrong (and sexism, homophobia etc.) then over time it becomes the norm.
It's like an ad for Tescos on the side of the pitch isn't going to make you shop in Tescos on its own, but these messages/slogans/logos pumped into the world breed familiarity and trust. Marketing, basically.
Except the anti-racist marketing (and anti-sexism, anti-homophobia etc.) is marketing for the greater good. | |

If it’s just cosmetic, what damage can it do? And more to the point, why get annoyed about it? I didn’t particularly like the collar on the Liverpool shirts, but I wouldn’t boo them for it or complain about it on social media.
People show their prejudices when they go against symbolism like taking the knee. Yesterday was a gesture to remind people that the game is united against racism. That’s all. The sad thing is it’s likely not even their own perspectives people are making idiots of themselves over half the time, but one they’ve adopted from people they follow on social media or have read in the rancid tabloids. Does it make a difference? Possibly not, but it doesn’t hurt to remind people given the disgusting scenes across the UK lately. |  |

I have to say that until someone posted an "explainer" on here a few years ago (8 -10?) I didn't understand the BLM movement either, had also been of the erroneous mindschool that "all lives matter". So I don't think we (not saying you) should be piling unkindly onto those who genuinely just don't know, haven't yet had the benefit of being educated by wiser & more aware people.
Yes it can be said that people should educate themselves, but let's face it, these days people are surrounded by bollox opinions everywhere on line.

If people are white, black, brown, purple, red, orange, or even yellow (well unless they from north of the waveney) all are equal. a
I accept that some are sometimes not treated as sutch.
But that should not change their chances in life.
All should be treated as equal.

Fair enough, although I imagine you were open minded and didn’t double down on any ignorance and resort to calling any people trying to help as racists and homophobes.
It’s worth pointing out that the EPL ‘taking the knee’ isn’t directly related to BLM. Obviously they’ve adopted the same symbolism (which was adopted by BLM themselves, so it’s not uniquely theirs). It comes from the players too, not the league, and last year it was also only for selected matches. I find it mind boggling that anyone could be critical. Who actually wants more racism in football?
