If it didn't mean anything then, they wouldn't do it.
I personally find the kneeling gesture offensive from my cultural understanding of kneeling being a gesture of submission. It's also annoying because it is yet another cultural import from America that doesn't fit our cultural context.
At the same time I have accepted that the people who do it have a different cultural understanding. They are either ignorant of the cultural significance of kneeling, or they choose to give it a new meaning.
