Personally the only thing that annoyed me yesterday was the pre match kneel on 09:44 - Aug 18 by NthQldITFC | It began as a protest against despicable institutional racism, and quickly became a very powerful worldwide symbol of the need for humanity to sort out its deep-rooted inequalities. The newness of that symbol has faded, but it remains as a brief gesture and much-needed reminder of the need for human decency. What on earth does this small symbolic act cost anyone who believes in that decency? Even if you don't think it is achieving anything, it's a bit like becoming offended at the convention of shaking hands. |
There is an irony about Premier League footballers taking the knee over inequality considering the current state of the game, though I agree with their actions from a societal point of view.

Personally the only thing that annoyed me yesterday was the pre match kneel on 10:08 - Aug 18 with 2295 views | RonFearonsHair | Lots of things are not required. The silly plinth the match ball sits on before kick-off, the backdrop the players stand in front of, the pre-match anthem, electronic sub boards. We could go on forever.

Who are you to say what is and isn't required? Surely recent events have shown that racism is still a huge problem.

Yeah totally agree on all of your response. Didn’t want to get into the gesture with the OP as I could see where it was heading, It is more than a symbol but being offended by that gesture, good grief. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Personally the only thing that annoyed me yesterday was the pre match kneel on 10:30 - Aug 18 with 2108 views | Whos_blue | I was really pleased to see it. Everyone on the pitch joined in and it looked great. I'm glad the OP posted their point in their response to seeing it, as it reminds us why it's still needed. I think the gesture lost its impact a bit when it was done before every game, but yesterday it hit the mark.

i don't have an issue with it in the slightest - it's a few times a season and it didn't even register with me yesterday. it's up to the players individually and collectively. i'm not all that clear on what it's now intended to mean - different commentators use many different phrases to describe it. personally i'm not that keen on people like salah (on £350,000 a week) getting any claim to the moral high ground when it comers to 'deep-rooted inequalities'. if the elite football bodies / media companies are in any way involved in promoting it, being bodies characterised by financial excess and extreme corporate greed, then that really is a pretty empty and cynical thing. I think the problem here is you haven't articulated why it annoys you? I can't understand how this is even remotely annoying but perhaps I and others might understand if you explain your annoyance and frustration and what is surely a good gesture? If it is just a case that it annoys you because it does and on that basis alone you've come on here and written about it then that is absolutely ridiculous. So there must be another reason?

It's the old 'you're not allowed a social conscience if you earn a lot of money' employed mostly by bad faith merchants who haven't got anything better to use when they're arguing against anything that involves being slightly less of a prick to your fellow humans.
