| Personally the only thing that annoyed me yesterday was the pre match kneel on 10:55 - Aug 18 by BlueBadger | It's the old 'you're not allowed a social conscience if you earn a lot of money' employed mostly by bad faith merchants who haven't got anything better to use when they're arguing against anything that involves being slightly less of a prick to your fellow humans. |
everyone's allowed a social conscience - it's a good thing. but if you earn £350,000 a week through an industry characterised by greed, extreme financial excess, and corruption you can also expect people to take your symbolic gestures on 'deep-rooted inequalities' with many many pinches of salt. people can earn many multi-millions, primarily due to monopoly power in the media industry and collusion with advertisers, but they can't then also expect their claims to moral authority also be universally respected. i'm certain you wouldn't be uncritical of the social conscience claims of a banker. what's the difference - both have their extreme wealth as a side product of corporate greed. you need to be consistent here.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

| I was annoyed too.... on 11:10 - Aug 18 with 2086 views | Bloots | ....annoyed we lost and a bit peeved that the announcer spent so much time shouting "Blue army" and announcing the teams that we didn't really get the chance to belt out "Hey Jude". Some blokes kneeling down didn't annoy me in the slightest though. | |

| Personally the only thing that annoyed me yesterday was the pre match kneel on 10:45 - Aug 18 by lowhouseblue | i don't have an issue with it in the slightest - it's a few times a season and it didn't even register with me yesterday. it's up to the players individually and collectively. i'm not all that clear on what it's now intended to mean - different commentators use many different phrases to describe it. personally i'm not that keen on people like salah (on £350,000 a week) getting any claim to the moral high ground when it comers to 'deep-rooted inequalities'. if the elite football bodies / media companies are in any way involved in promoting it, being bodies characterised by financial excess and extreme corporate greed, then that really is a pretty empty and cynical thing. i did not know that. in which case salah wasn't the best of the liverpool team to pick out - i just assumed he earned the most. but the point about obscene wealth in elite football still stands. in most cases i will look elsewhere for moral leadership. | |

"personally i'm not that keen on people like salah (on £350,000 a week) getting any claim to the moral high ground when it comers to 'deep-rooted inequalities'." i was originally replying to a post which had described taking the knee as a statement against 'deep-rooted inequalities' - not narrowly as about racism. i have explained why i'm not all that impressed by the moral authority of elite footballers when it comes to economic inequality. i have nothing against them, certainly not those who play for town, but they aren't in general people i would take moral leadership from.

Taking the knee is about racism though. And actually high profile footballers are excellent people to make a symbolic gesture against it.

Brilliant. Only 5 more threads of this bobbins to go. PS. Polite and respectful mesage to nogs and blueas. Please don't turn this into a 5-6 pager of "you said". You've both made your points well. Can we just accept a score draw with this one? The thread has been decent but risks losing it's way with the personal stuff between you both. As I said. It's a polite and respectful request.

What does supporting the club for 60 years have to do with it? Surely you remember the bad old days of monkey chants etc and we have a proud Muslim for a captain, leading us out in the Prem and you are moaning about this? Can you not see what an ignorant look that’s giving off? You can’t seem to say why it’s even an issue, just repeating it’s your opinion only baffles people more. If you can’t explain it to people, trying to justify it and talking about a stir, only makes it seem like you’re intentionally being a dickhead to annoy people.

| Personally the only thing that annoyed me yesterday was the pre match kneel on 10:31 - Aug 18 by glasso | ...and yet here you are, showing exactly why it is needed. |
Read it again. It shouldn't be needed because racism shouldn't be a thing. Footballers having to remind people that being a racist and that equality is a human right, isn't right. Why can't people just be accepted for who they are, rather than what they look like/sexuality/religion. Such a shame.

| Personally the only thing that annoyed me yesterday was the pre match kneel on 12:45 - Aug 18 with 1853 views | ElephantintheRoom | It’s a little odd when Ipswich are funded to profit the very Institution that got US sportsmen kneeling but other than that whiff of hypocrisy it’s just virtue signalling and surely doesn’t do much harm? Then again maybe that’s why they did it. | |

| Personally the only thing that annoyed me yesterday was the pre match kneel on 12:46 - Aug 18 with 1844 views | Rimsy | The only thing I would say, is that it's obviously an edict from the PL. The players are not choosing to take the knee, rather they are contractually obliged (for 6 games?). Rather negates the point of it. Doesn't bother me either way by the way. | |

| Personally the only thing that annoyed me yesterday was the pre match kneel on 12:51 - Aug 18 with 1778 views | Cafe_Newman | Respectfully, Carlisleaway, I would say you should have expanded on your reasons for your annoyance because you're likely to be accused of holding views which you may not hold if you don't. I'm a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant male. I have mixed-race kids of my own and mixed-race nieces and nephews. My family is truly multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-faith, multi-national and multi-political. The knee at the start of the match irritated me slightly too but not because it's not necessary or because there's no racism. Not even because I don't like mixing politics with sport - although I recognise there can be a place for using sport to get important messages across to people for the betterment of society. My annoyance lies in the fact although this is supposed to be an opportunity given to the players to voluntarily express their stance against forms of inequality - it comes at a price. Many see this as virtue signalling where those who decide not to express their views in this manner run the risk of appearing not to support equality for minorities. Personally, I would feel very uncomfortable taking the knee in that situation, as would my kids and their mother. Racial, cultural and religious differences will always will be used as a tool in politics. It's interesting to see that many of the negative comments you have received in this thread are from the most vocal in political threads on this site. My own family experiences over the last 5 decades have shown me that many of us who have been at the blunt end of racism and minority exclusion prefer to recognise that the biggest problem lat the moment lies with our politicians who, by playing the race and minority cards, manufacture and inflame division in society for their own political goals. A belief held by my family and friends that have experienced injustices first-hand is that the well-intentioned "taking of the knee" can actually worsen the climate of division in society and that there are better, longer lasting solutions to this particular problem than taking the knee. Maybe your short-term memory is worse than mine, because I seem to remember you posting the same ignorant/wind-up comment about 5(?) years ago (my apols if incorrect, but your username is quite distinctive). Why would you do that? Just seems provocative and/or wilfully ignorant. Most people would have learned from the previous experience of doing the same. (Again, apols if I've got the wrong person). | |
