Well, I'm a bit confused and welcome peoples unbiased comments. 10:07 - Aug 18 with 4725 viewsLord_Lucan

I'm a bit pissed off that we didn't get at least a point yesterday, bearing in mind we won't see anything from Man C.

Hooever - I thought we played pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Aside from the expected comments on the Pinkun saying we were lucky not to have lost 9-0, I am a little surprised by a few comments from friends across the globe - along the lines of "You were out of your depth"

What are other peoples views and what comments have you received - if any?

We were more than in it until the 50th/55th minute mark. Then... yep, we looked completely out of our depth.

Gave them a hell of a game first half, made them change a few things and then they turned on the style at the same time we ran out of steam.

A really excellent showing from us considering it was the majority of our League One team on show and we’ll gain loads of confidence from that and start to integrate new players over the coming weeks to improve. I am definitely less worried about our chances of survival after yesterday than I was before it.

We went toe to toe with a champions league team for an hour of that game yesterday...

They then upped it and scored 2 goals in 5 mins, job done...

We weren't embarrassed, or humiliated yesterday and were arguably the better team in the first half.. had we taken our chances and gone in ahead it would have been deserved and wouldn't have flattered us 1 bit

I'll stick with the views of the Liverpool fans who were actually there. Rather than a 'football expert' from a non footballing country.

"You gave us real trouble first half"
"You should of had the lead at half time"
"Proper ground with proper fans, Hope you stay up"

The difference we’ll find this season is due to the upgrade in quality in the EPL, if you don’t take your chances these sides are clinical. First half we played well and looked very good, 2nd half Liverpool showed their class, which they should. Hopefully with that first 45mins it will give our players confidence, let’s not forget 7 of the starting XI were playing in L1 only a couple of seasons ago, that is a huge step up and they didn’t look out of place. Games like yesterday won’t define us, but I thought we gave a good account of ourselves against one of the top sides in this league. As fans, I think we need to have some perspective this season. It’s going to be tough, but I do think we’ve got a chance.

It's all semantics isn't it?

You could say that the team (or certain players) in certain periods were out of their depth, if the depth is playing man-for-man against some of the best and most expensive players in the league.

The last third of the game was always going to be tough with our bench as it stands. The squad isn't quite up to challenging the top sides in the league and that's fine for the time being. The gulf between them and where we've come from is enormous.

I’ll reserve judgment for a few weeks until we’ve played a range of sides. We all know next week is going to be tough.

I loved the way that we showed no respect to our opponents. We got stuck into them took the yellows but managed that situation pretty well. But we have to learn how to do it over 90 minutes. Squad depth is huge in that respect. Liverpool could bring on Konate at h/t because Delap had bullied Quansah out of the game. That’s impossible to compete with

If you only watch the highlights I can see how people might say we were out of our depth. But the highlights are just that and they don't paint the whole picture.
We gave Liverpool, yes, Liverpool a game for 50 odd minutes. That's definitely something to build on.
No shame in yesterday's result.
The first Liverpool goal was superb. That pass from TAA was delicious. As a Town fan, not so great to be on the recieving end, but as a football fan, that's what I want to see.
Sloppy 2nd goal in the build up, but a neat finish fom Salah. Again, I reapeat that. Mo Salah scored for Liverpool in a league match at Portman Road.
It's all about perspective.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

It was like a cup game v a prem side in how the game turned out

Matched them for 60 minutes then the true difference in team showed.

Not a negative but showed why KM wanted lots of signings.

Ok it was Liverpool but. It has left me worried , I was worried at half time as I thought Lpool just sat back and played within themselves a bit first half . They came out second half upped their game and tore us to bits with their movement . I certainly don't want to put too much of a downer but it has left me worried as one or two of our players have a lot to do to be able to compete at this level. I really hope I am proved to be wrong . No lack of effort and no lack of fitness that I coul see but not enough Premier league quality as yet .

We may have been a bit out of our depth for about 20 minutes from about when Burns got injured to the last 10 minutes or so. Put that down to our effort expended to that point and the sheer quality in the Liverpool squad.

But there was no being outclassed. Despite the wobble, we kept it down to 0 - 2. Yes, they could perhaps have scored more, but so could we (in the first half) - neither side did.

Our mutual friend commented that the Liverpool players were actually beginning to look a bit rattled just before half time. If we could have grabbed a goal then, who knows how things would have turned out?

When I saw that team announced, I did let out a bit of a gulp. 7 out of 11 that had played in League One and I was a little pleasantly surprised it was only 0-2 to be honest. It just isn't realistic to have a side that oozes Premier League quality over half a transfer window following two promotions.

To hear we we were the better side over the first 45 was extremely pleasing so fully confident once additions are added, KM can use that international break to properly tackle the biggest league in the world (let's not forget).

I'm confident we'll be ok, but then again I have to be as a Town fan. The casual observers and blinkered types such as salty champ fans and Nodgers will always think we'll get pumped each week and have no place there. Segments of highlights on platforms such as MOTD that are weighted towards the winning side, regardless of context, will also play into this agenda too.

If only that delap pass was slightly more central for hutchinson.. think he would have slotted that home.

I think we acquitted ourselves well. Particularly in the first half. Got a bit overrun in the second half. But we won't be playing Liverpool every week so I think if we can play like that we should surely get some good results this season. Plus we have our new signings to bed in which will add some quality. I think we can expect to get turned over by City next week but I'm hoping for our first 3 points against Fulham.

My view is during those fateful second half minutes it did feel like we were totally out of our depth, but looking back, it was just the high risk tactics we were employing that were perfect in the first half suddenly fell apart. We could have parked the bus for awhile after the first goal and that would have immediately stopped them slicing through us at will, and McKenna alludes to something similar in his press conference

Seeing all the results yesterday. and having yet to see Brentford and Leicester, I'm convinced that when KM gets his best team together we can give 8 or 9 teams a real good game this season (and are probably better than at least three having seen Everton yesterday)

This ^^

And TalkSport's halftime summary.

"If this was a boxing match, Ipswich would be ahead on points"

To continue the analogy, after an hour our fitness levels weren't there to match our earlier intensity, and Liverpool landed the knockout punch.

They didn’t sit back or play within themselves first half. We didn’t allow them to play and they created very little. We were brave and forceful.

Second half we lost a bit of tempo, Burns loss removed an outlet, players tired, gaps appeared and Liverpool’s quality showed. They started opening us up and it was no surprise they scored. They didn’t ease off and we couldn’t get out. They pressed us throughout.

They were better than us and deservedly won the game. It was not a thrashing or a humiliation. We lost to a stronger team after a strong first half. I chatted with some Liverpool people after the game and that was their view as well as mine.

We had a team, some players having only played a handful of games together and others yet to train with us against a champions league team that has bonded together unchanged for almost 2 seasons now and held our own if not outperformed first half.

It was only burns injury, the heat, tiring of our players and ironically watering the grass was our down fall and helped Liverpool more than ourselves.

I think in a few weeks of this team gelling together and playing McKennas way against lesser teams which is most, then we will surprise quite a few. Greaves was amazing, wolfy stood up, Walton played a blinder. Leaf dealt really well with salah first half and tuanzabe also with Diaz for the majority. Midfield was good in centre and delap was a massive handful. I can wait to see a full uninjured starting 11 after a few games togther including Phillips and szmods who from his cameo looks set to have a great season and who I think we be a great signing on the left so Hutchinson can be on the right.

I have waited, along with so many other fans for this day to come. I’ve enjoyed my Saturday night Match of the Days (Lineker apart) but if I’ve learnt nothing else from this weekend, it is that highlights only reflects an editorial take on a game.
Yes in my dreams, we were going to win 2 - 0. In reality it was a fine start with a disappointing outcome. We continue to enjoy the ride and watch players that we know are the best in the world. I personally believe that we will stay up, beat our lower rivals and cause a couple of really enjoyable upsets.
We become more sentimental as we get older and I had tears in my eyes when the teams came out. We are back and with positivity, we will stay back💙

Many sides look out of their depth against Liverpool, it was a tough game to start with considering we had 7 players from our League One days only two seasons ago, did your friends across the globe LL consider that? Of course they didn't and the Premier league has about four leagues within in now too, that's what money has done...

What did football fans expect? I expected nothing from yesterday in terms of points, just hoped we didn't get a confidence destroying 5/6 goal drubbing which would/could have dented our confidence quite a bit and given the plastic fans at work on Monday the chance to chirp nonsense..

I doubt they were ever truly concerned that they wouldn’t get the win, but certainly 1st half we were a match without ever really creating anything clear cut or asking any questions of Alisson. Ultimately the better quality started to show as the game wore on and in the end it was comfortable. It was the equivalent of us going away to Exeter in L1, generally hard fought games against sides who saw it as their big day but the cream generally rises to the top.

None of that is any disgrace though. 7 of our starting XI came with us from L1. Liverpool isn’t the level we need to be at, that’s not our bar. Just like Ipswich levels wasn’t the bar for Exeter. Their season was defined by games against Cheltenham & Forest Green in the same respect ours will be vs Saints, Leicester, Everton etc. No harm done at all yesterday, and no need for an overreaction from anyone.
