Team for Saturday 18:12 - Aug 19 with 3773 views | Hackneyblueboy | Liverpool done, time to move on to Citeh! Personally I'd go 3 at the back for this one. Going to have to be resolute for long periods. Muric to return in goal, Johnson for the injured burns and Smzodics in for Chappers. Muric Axel Woolf Greaves Johnson Luongo Morsy Leif Hutch Smzodics Delap Personally I'd probably take a good performance and another small defeat. A good result from the Fulham game and I think we'd go into the international break with lots of confidence, despite not picking up too many points.

I would rather see Greaves to central in a back 3 to cover him (more height and more pace, but can you really cover haaland) but that would leave a question over lcb. Would burgess be up to it? Team for Saturday on 19:13 - Aug 19 with 3321 views | JammyDodgerrr | Don't understand the clamour to switch away from a system that's served us so well. It's not our style to go defensive and no real reason to change away from the system that the players know inside and out. I'd pretty much go with what it was last week, with presumably Szmodics coming in for burns.

I think it might be because it worked so well against Nice. It looks like a tempting option, especially against the stronger sides. To be honest, with the line up we had on Saturday, we can easily switch between a back three and back four. Presumably Johnson will come in for Burns. Szmodics for Chaplin, perhaps? I imagine Cajuste will start on the bench. ETA: Forgot, Muric will probably come in for Walton. [Post edited 19 Aug 2024 19:29]

Team for Saturday on 19:24 - Aug 19 with 3219 views | portmanking | Cajuste starts, for me. Boy looks an absolute specimen and he says he's in great shape and "never run more than this pre-season". What a confidence boost it could give him if he excels against City. I'm sure Muric will be frothing at the mouth to be back to face his former club too.

Might as well to be fair. Arguably a very good game to throw him in to.

Mentioned on another thread that ever since we got promoted I've been hoping to see Haaland tring to bully big Cam the way he does other centre backs; if we're playing a back 3 rather him in the middle, with Axel and Greaves either side with the pace to get out and cover the space behind the wing backs.

I think we need another centre back. Unless you think Delap could do something there?

We were more defenisive away from home last season. From memory we had the second most points away from home and the second best defensive performance. We were quite effective hitting teams in the transition and staying in our shape. [Post edited 19 Aug 2024 20:21]

I think the problem is that our system worked brilliantly when our players were a man for man match. It's a different game now. They ( Liverpool, Man City and others ) are so much better than us that we might have to change. We can't have many more 2nd half experiences or else we are stuffed. 3-5-2 4-5-1 I dunno but something very different might happen. I'm not being negative or anything - I'm OK about the season - just thinking outloud

I could see it but not under KMck. I don’t know that Szmodics has the pace to play wide in this formation but coming on to the ball and on to goal. If he were the false 9 with Delap and Hutchinson either side that might work. It’s just we’ve never practiced this in any game.

Best I e seen anyone play against Citeh for extended periods was Inzaghi’s Inter and they still lost but at least they were competitive. Team for Saturday on 06:29 - Aug 20 with 1960 views | Len_Brennan | The reason I think we might go with 3 at the back, for this game at least, is becaise of how Liverpool had clearly targetted us at left back, both with long balls over the top & with the crisp passing which ultimately led to their goals. Now to be clear, this is now a condemnation of Davis, who actually played well defensively for much of Saturday's game; he made numerous good tackles, got back quickly & cut off shots & runs of one of the best attackers in Premier League history. However, everyone knows that Leif's main attributes are in his hard running over 90 minutes & the quality of the balls in from that sweet left foot. Even in League One that meant that he got caught out of position at times when he was in attack mode & had to chase back at top speed. Most of the time in League One & The Championship we could get away with it, because the quality of the opposition final ball & finishing was of a level where chances were not converted in goals. Also, if we did concede a goal, the risk/reward was worth it, because we would just go up the other end & expect to get two of our own before the end. We saw on Saturday though, what it is like to be up against elite players & what is likely to be happen if you are out of position, or switch off, for just 2 seconds; it will be the same against Man City, so I can see Axel moving in, with Johnson as a RWB, and Greaves offering more protection as the left sided CB in a three. Personally, I thought Woolfy had a decent game against Liverpool, so I'd keep him in. Morsy & Luongo in the middle, with Cajuste to replace Mass around the 62 mark, with Hutchinson & Szmodics as the two #10s supporting Delap, who will be looking to make a point. We're away to Man City!!!

But the thing is, Leif isn't out of position. KM wants him going forward, same as last season, that's how we create many of our goals. The issue is when he does go forward another player has to cover that. What happened on Sat is Luongo, who was man-marking TAA, was dropping back in the first half. But in the 2nd TAA stayed closer towards the Pool defence, which meant Luongo was further away from covering the LB position when Leif moved forward. Luongo also looked knackered after a few mins of the 2nd half. Pool then used TAA's passing ability to drop balls into the LB position when Leif was forward and Salah's pace did the rest. The issue was really Luongo not covering for Leif and in some ways Greaves not moving across quickly enough to challenge Salah. But KM will work on that in training, it's fine tuning I wouldn't drop Leif, unless the plan is we go into the game and park the bus for a 0-0 and maybe hit them on the break for a 0-1, and KM is never going to do that.

Wouldn’t the solution to the problem you highlight be to have an extra body in midfield. Stick with the defensive style but add a deep defensive midfielder sitting between the defence and tel central midfielders.
