Well food being affordable for the poorer folk is possibly a good thing no? I recall reading an article about 10 years ago or so, some free-market piece making the argument that the then $0.99 double cheeseburger from McDonalds was an example of the miracle of capitalism. Never in history has so much nutrition (!) and calories been widely available at that low a price.

The supermarkets have so much buying power that it’s the people in the supply chain that get squeezed - smaller suppliers, farmers etc. The failure rate of UK businesses was higher in 2022 than it was in the GFC, not every firm was price gouging, it makes a good headline and gets a few riled up on here - but the reality is many companies went under. People complain about low wages, but then want margins squeezed to pennies. And despite a measly rise, nobody can compete with those prices, smaller ‘local’ sandwich shops have all but disappeared in many places. [Post edited 21 Aug 2024 11:55]

Generally, cheap food has low nutrient levels, there are issues with lower food safety and quality, huge environmental impact (poor/ cheap farming techniques), ethics (how much do you think people are paid to produce cheap food?, It's never produced at a 'loss'). I could go on.

Others would argue that the stitch up is that you need a clubcard to get the cheaper price. Effectively the only way to get the best price at many supermarkets now is in exchange for your data which could be argued to be a bit grubby. PS. Clubcard Loyalists sounds like one of the sides in a very bizarre civil war!

Why is this ‘wanting your data’ thing such a modern argument? The clubcard has been going nearly 30 years, it’s not a new thing, you would’ve had to give details back then as well?

It doesn’t really. The supermarkets sell the data to (among others) political parties for targeted advertising. With your shopping records they can work out: * the number of people in your household * if you have kids * if you are a vegetarian/buy free range * a good bit about your health Plus loads more. I’d rather they didn’t have access to all that tbqhwy [Post edited 21 Aug 2024 12:43]

Clubcard was a bit of a pioneer in this sort of data collection. I think the biggest thing is that people understand more now than before (albeit it' really too late, there's so much of your data already flying around and you can never put it back in the box) about your data being collected.

Are you for real? You can't seriously be suggesting that buying some bread, or rolls, with some kind of filling, such as ham, cheese, chicken etc, and a multi pack of crisps or some fruit, that would do a few days of lunches would be worth doing, and be far cheaper, are you?

I don’t think there’s any argument at all. Two tier pricing is a terrible thing. The supermarkets have behaved appallingly since the beginning of the pandemic and whilst they like to gaslight us into thinking they’re some benevolent trustworthy resource that’s always got our back the reality is they’re crisis profiteers, just as energy firms are war profiteers.

I've never liked the normal sandwiches at most supermarkets, never that tasty. But Sub rolls or wraps can be decent.
