Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? 15:19 - Aug 28 with 6273 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | Put your biased Ipswich head to one side on this. For me, the bottom 5 is between us, Leicester, Southampton, Everton and Wolves. The reason for these 5 is I'm not sure if all 5 have enough quality about them at both ends of the pitch, excluding Everton defensively who are missing key players right now, but going forwards, I think they're in trouble with their options. Is our squad better than at least 3 others?

Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? on 15:23 - Aug 28 by flykickingbybgunn | The squads may be on a par or we may be even slightly better. But our manager is streets ahead. |
Yep, well said. We'll finish above all the teams in the OT and more besides. Lazy pundits look at individual players as opposed to how managers create teams.
Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? on 16:50 - Aug 28 with 1265 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Depending on what happens with the financial investigations, it is not totally inconceivable that Man City occupy one of those relegation slots. I am confident we have enough to finish well clear of the bottom 3 and that we will do unless an unfortunate combination of events works against us.

Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? on 17:05 - Aug 28 with 1209 views | dirtyboy | Wolves definitely appear weaker and did have a poor end of season. I would hope they'll be one who get pulled downwards this season. Leicester had a better starting squad than us, but we've strengthened significantly, plus they've lost KDH who was superb (although unlikeable for opposition!) Who knows what will happen with points deductions for them, maybe 6-8? Won't be 12 like some hope. That will impact them for sure. Could well be the difference. Bournemouth have spent a fair whack and on some tidy players, they looked good the other day under Iraola, they won't struggle. Everton may be pulled downwards by a points deduction, not sure on that though. Dyche will, ultimately, be dogged, hard to beat and they won't go down without a fight. Southampton are a tricky one, they'll have enough of the ball to pick points up as long as they are a little more pragmatic in their approach. Will Martin change in any way shape or form? They've strengthened in a few areas and we'd be daft to think we won't be very close to them come May. Ones to watch... Crystal Palace...yes, their end of season form was scintilating, but Olise was electric in that team and if they lose Guehi, that's their two best players gone, don't underestimate that impact (ifs and maybes there) Brentford.... Toney is no real miss imo, they showed they can cope without him already and Mbuemo looks lively, however, they don't have a great deal of depth in their squad and haven't strengthened particularly it appears. Their form last year post Christmas was not great, so they'll need to turn that around early or could end up in the mire. Obviously we have a couple of days of the window left and things can change fast in terms of squads etc. Conclusion. I don't know. I just don't know. Our job is to get up and cheer and shout and ensure home games give us every chance of getting something.
Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? on 17:06 - Aug 28 with 1208 views | warky_1970 | Who knows? We haven’t seen most of the squad let alone seen them play a game together. We haven’t seen us play anyone we might consider beatable yet. The squad or at least 90% of the squad from last year definitely aren’t good enough for this level but you’d hope having spent north of £100m on transfer fees alone that we could stand a chance. I can’t see us finishing any higher than 15th or 16th which would still be a brilliant season for us.
Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? on 17:17 - Aug 28 with 1192 views | ArnoldMoorhen | If, by October, Kalvin Phillips gets back to something approaching his form of 5 years ago, then, yes, we will have enough. If any one of Szmodics, Hutchinson, Clarke, Delap or Ogbene, has a hot season, then we will have a good chance of staying up. If Muric has had his worst game of the season already, then we stand a good chance of staying up. If Phillips comes good, Muric is solid and two or more of the attackers are hot, then I would be confident of a mid-table finish.

Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? on 15:57 - Aug 28 by JammyDodgerrr | Not sure why you are including Wolves other than the recency bias of them getting hammered at the weekend. They will be comfortably fine, as they were last year. We are pretty much in a shoot out with Everton and Forest. Leicester and Southampton will easily finish bottom 2 so we need to do more than the other two, and i think we will. I think Brentford could get dragged in easily but looks like they might end up keeping Toney which will be more than enough to keep them safe. |
I wouldnt be surprised to see wolves, Brentford or palace sucked into the scrap at the bottom tbh.

Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? on 15:40 - Aug 28 by BseaBlue | Didn't Forest spend more than this when they went up? I think it harsh to compare what we have spent against the likes of Leicester, Southampton, Burnley and others when they have had the quality from jumping between the divisions before. We have effectively had to improve on a group of players plying their traid in league one two seasons ago. |
A few have spent more in transfer fees from memory and all survived (Forest, Villa, Leeds, maybe Wolves), so we'd be the highest spenders on fees to not stay up. Burnley last season are the record setters currently TMK. As you say though, our situation is very different from the yo-yo sides. Transfer fees are also a third of the picture maybe; hard to say where our wage bill is now compared to Southampton or Leicester (a fair amount less would be my guess but it's impossible to know). On paper our quality probably looks below most if not all squads I guess at this time. Very doubtful mid-table sides like Brighton would want any of our players in their starting XI. Even our best players are unproven or unfancied really (Omari outside Chelsea's 25, Phillips hardly played by West Ham, Szmodics an interminable bidding war against ourselves..). They now have the opportunity to change opinion though, to hit new heights or return to their best. And the aim of the game is to have enough quality to make at least half the matches a real contest, which I'm optimistic we do now in most areas. Hopefully we've also thought through our squad balance better than most and of course we back McKenna to extract the most out of them. We beat two sides last season with clearly more talented squads on paper. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? on 18:01 - Aug 28 with 1124 views | MK1 | 2 things to be considered. Points deductions for a few and our manager. McKenna is better than all those teams you've mentioned. He has assembled a squad that he believes is good enough. That's all I need to believe we will survive. It will be tight, but I am now as confident as I can be about our chances.

He believes it's good enough, the squad can see he believes it's good enough, the squad completely and utterly believe in him (as do all who have observed him), ergo the squad indisputably is good enough.

Forest didn't get relegated. Which is what I'm saying really - clubs don't really spend this sort of money to go down and we should revise our expectations accordingly. Teams like Leicester, Southampton and Burnley tend to go down more regularly than teams like us (9 of the last 13 went down), who got promoted without parachute payments (11 of the last 17 stayed up). So I'm not terribly concerned about that. I also don't think you should go out and spend £100m+ and do the whole "oh, plucky little Ipswich, up against it".

Southampton are at Brentford. Palace (who have already lost at Brentford) are at Chelsea. Wolves are at Forest. Everton have Bournemouth at home. Even if we lose to Fulham at home (which would be a disappointing result), if 3 of those 4 lose as well, we will still be level on points with safety. Ultimately, we need to start picking up points and I would be a bit concerned if we got none from Saturday.

Do we have enough to NOT be one of the bottom three? on 14:17 - Aug 29 with 702 views | ElephantintheRoom | Depends how good Forest, Everton, Chelsea and Oil State Sportswashing Project's lawyers are. Personally I thought a tightly knit team might have surprised a few - now a tidal wave of mercenaries and rentals have arrived I have my doubts.
