Trump is a real nutcase. 02:56 - Sep 11 with 18183 views | Mercian | Some of his paraphrased quotes from The Presidential Debate. "Immigrants are kidnapping and eating cats and dogs." "Ashli Babbitt (The woman killed during the Capitol insurrection attempt) was a great patriot murdered by police" "Elections are bad." "Babies are being legally murdered minutes after they are born." i just don't understand how anyone could listen to stuff like that and think he's my man for the top job. What a sorry state of affairs.

To be fair, I don't think Harris' job is to win over any Trump supporters, just not to lose any of Biden's from last time around And Trump is doing a pretty good job of coming across as a loon to those who could be tempted to vote for him | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That’s a fair point. His core support will be a lost cause.

It's more, in a binary winner-takes-all system, that once he's selected as the candidate, not voting for Trump will mean a Democrat becomes President. A lot of Republicans - even if they dislike the man himself - are not going to be able to stomch that. He also portrays himself as a disruptor, upsetting the Washinton order which has not been seen as delivering for large sections of the USA (particularly those areas where industries/mining have declined and jobs have gone abroad). The chaos and rambling soundbites - plus being despised by all the right people - adds to that appeal. They aren't looking for quiet competence, but revolution and revenge for a lost "golden age" of lucrative full employment.

That hard core of nutty Trump cultists is, as proven in 2020, not enough to win him the election (or even successfully mount a violent coup in the aftermath). He needs the mainstream Republicans and a decent slice of the uncommitted voters, too. Their opinions are more likely to change, even if they only abstain through disgust. He's helped by the peculiarities of the Electoral College (which was the only thing won it for him in 2016). But even there he needs to win enough of the crucial swing states to tip the balance.

I find the American election system a bit bizarre. Some Yank bod was on the radio yesterday saying that all but 7 states are secure for either party and the 7 remaining are on a knife edge. I can't say I am keen on either candidate, in fact it all looks a bit hopeless. I don't care about the American economy, in fact a weak dollar is extremely good for UK PLC Personally, my problem with Trump is Putin and Ukraine. He may say some crazy things and I am sure he's not a nice person, however, I have never seen such an effective politician (if you can call him that) work the room.

What about the fact he was found guilty in a civil court of raping a woman? Or that he incited a riot that ended with people getting killed? Or that he has been found guilty of falsifying accounts? Or that he doesn't believe in climate change and just wants to drill baby? The fact he hands out a glass of beer nicely has little credence really does it?

Crazy system getting the most votes doesn’t guarantee victory. Most States are foregone conclusions they never change sides. It is what happens in the seven states that might go either way that matters. All about making sure you support votes in those 7 states.

Yes, it all comes down to those swing states, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada and Arizona. A few more might be heading that way, as demographic shifts affect the electoral landscape. Pennsylvania is tipped to be an interesting one this time round. Unlike targeting constituencies in the UK (which might win you one seat), it gains a whole block of votes. In all bar two (Maine and Nebraska, who only have 2 and 3 Electoral College delegates respectively), winning the state gives you the whole group - e.g. 16 in the case of Michigan. The risk from Trump himself will be mitigated if he does not control both houses of Congress. That puts serious limits upon what a President can achieve. If nothing else, every few months they have the ability to block funding for the government and wring concessions from the administration. Also (unless he can change the Constitution - which requires an unlikely supermajority) he only has one four-year term. That will affect how he is perceived both domestically and in the wider world.

Trump is a real nutcase. on 10:02 - Sep 11 with 7234 views | BloomBlue | It's easier in opposition than in power. You can say anything you want in opposition, you're not in power (yet) to prove it. Ukraine is a classic example where Trump can say if I had been in power Putin wouldn't do X or Y, nobody can disprove it as he's not in power. Although in the case of Ukraine I guess he can argue Putin didn't invade while he was President. But the point is still the same, it's a lot easier to say this or that wouldn't happen when it opposition. It's also part of his problem at the moment once Biden dropped out of the race, he could pin everything on Biden, but with Harris it's slightly more difficult as a President will always have final say including over the VP. So Trump is trying to stick her to the same post, and her previous ideas hence the communist attack/heritage etc. The polls will be interesting post the debate as Harris initially took a lead where she became the Democrats candidate but that has closed again since then

Trump is a real nutcase. on 10:22 - Sep 11 with 7032 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | He is even more unhinged than when he first started cos-playing as a politician. A half-sane Republican would throw some real world stuff at Kamala - many economists believe Biden’s $1.2trn infrastructure stimulus contributed to the severity of US inflation (Fed are behind the rest of the west in dropping interest rates), the strong dollar (which hurts exports), and US debt crisis (they almost defaulted on a payment last year, and it’s looking unsustainable without cuts). Instead he waffled on some bonkers claim about immigrants eating people’s pets…lunatic.

It is quite possible that Putin wouldn't have invaded Ukraine if Trump were President - but that's only because the latter would have exerted every influence to get the former exactly what he wanted. Trump already disliked Zelensky because he didn't cooperate in the attempt to pin political influence charges on Joe/Hunter Biden.

Sadly she is losing big in the polls and more critically in all the swing states and its looking like a landslide for Trump. The Republicans are looking likely to win the senate as well as things stand.

Which polls are those? Most of the ones I've seen have put them within the margin of error apart*, with the swing states particularly close. * Mostly around 47% or 48% each.
