What bike did you have as a kid? 13:16 - Sep 26 with 4043 viewsKeno

Prompted by a discussion as to how cool it would have been to have a Chopper bike, although actually they were a bit naff

I had a white Raleigh Olympus, looked so cool!!

PS that isnt me in the picture, I was cooler than that

It depended on which one I could pinch on any given day.

I had a Rad Rat. A pink and yellow twelve geared mountain bike with with a plastic back wheel cover with a picture of what can only be described as a rad rat on a skateboard. It was every bit as crap as it sounds.

Grifter. Best bike in the world. Damn heavy and I could wheelie it. 3 gears. Chunky tyres.

Cousin had a chopper. Back pedal to brake?? And gears between your legs. Really?? It was only the shape that made it iconic otherwise it was a dodgy bike.

IMHO

I got a Raleigh Chopper one Xmas. It was second hand, but I loved it. In blue of course. In later years we progressed to making our own bikes, which basically meant putting the widest set of cow horn handlebars that you could find/afford into an old bike.

Compulsory of course to tuck in the plastic ends of the mudguards so that they rubbed against the tyres to make it sound like you were riding a moped

Raleigh Mustang for me, similar to this one, but more orange, if I recall corrctly.

Late 80's early 90's every other lad had one.

Edit - the bike I actually wanted back then was the slightly more expensive, but much cooler, Raleigh Lizard

Raleigh Olympus in blue black & white

Even though it was a racer, I still put a playing card pegged onto the frame so the end would hit the spokes so it sounded like a motorbike!

A selection of second hand antiques with caliper brakes until my mum and dad said they'd get me a new one. I set out a detailed spec, including drop handlebars, 10 speed, racing saddle and a drinks bottle and woke up to a sturdy Dawes 3 speed with a saddlebag that Dixon of Dock Green would have sent back for being too dull. I only went out in the dark.

I always thought I had a Raleigh Boxer, but googling it I must've had a Burner and my brother had a Boxer.

But yeah, coolest bike ever with those wheels/blue tyres.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Emmelle Classic
BMX built and spray painted by my dad from scavenged parts (mag wheels!)
Raleigh Amazon - which was originally my Dad's who is 6ft3. I topped out at 5ft7 so never actually fitted the bike and had to jump off 🤣

Raleigh Strika, black one. Brother had a Grifter.

There was Raleigh progression as you grew... Boxer, Strika (I also had the black one), Grifter.

Except I went from Strika to Raleigh Pacer (a form of racer).

Had a couple but did make a habit of falling off. On occasion, about 7, I came in with blood pouring from my elbow.

My Dad seeing the gushing blood sent me into the garden with "You're bleeding on the carpet, stay outside until it's stopped"

Lesson learned and I have avoided medical care whenever I've tasted tarmac since.
