What bike did you have as a kid? 13:16 - Sep 26 with 4040 views | Keno | Prompted by a discussion as to how cool it would have been to have a Chopper bike, although actually they were a bit naff I had a white Raleigh Olympus, looked so cool!! Grifter was the big bike for older boys

My first crash on a motorbike (scooter) was on the way home from the CBT. Had a new scoot delivered to the test center.and crashed it on the way home ffs Just in from a ride in the Pyrenees. P*ssing down so having a lazy day, to the Picos mountains in the morning.

What bike did you have as a kid? on 14:38 - Sep 26 with 1285 views | blueasfook | Raleigh Super Tuff Burner. It had Skyway (i think?) wheels. The gold finish was like a plastic coating which I scraped off and it was chrome underneath, so mine ended up chrome instead of gold.

Same. I had that colour Strika and then moved on to the larger Grifter (silver). Then a Rayleigh racer from when I was about 12/13, but couldn't tell you what it was called. I went all over Suffolk on that thing though.

What bike did you have as a kid? on 15:04 - Sep 26 with 1252 views | Whos_blue | I had several bikes as a kid. The first one I remember was my grandma's old step through bike. My dad painted it yellow and black to match Mildehall Fen Tigers colours. I used my mum's shopper and my grandad's sit up and beg too. My first new bike was a Raleigh Commando circa 79. My grandad then reconned a 10 speed racer. My last childhood bike was a black and red Raleigh Burner BMX circa 83/4.

Another Striker here! Then I was bought a BMX style bike, but it had gears… thinking back I was a ungrateful sod!

What bike did you have as a kid? on 13:25 - Sep 26 by Help | Grifter. Best bike in the world. Damn heavy and I could wheelie it. 3 gears. Chunky tyres. Cousin had a chopper. Back pedal to brake?? And gears between your legs. Really?? It was only the shape that made it iconic otherwise it was a dodgy bike. IMHO |
I got a blue grifter for my 10th birthday. Absolutely loved it. Got a bit jealous when a couple of mates got diamondbacks though

What bike did you have as a kid? on 14:17 - Sep 26 by ITFC_Forever | There was Raleigh progression as you grew... Boxer, Strika (I also had the black one), Grifter. Except I went from Strika to Raleigh Pacer (a form of racer). |
And folding the mudguard on a Grifter so it caught the tire and made a sound like a motorbike…

I used to peg a playing card to the rear frame for the same effect. I then progressed to a twist grip that made a motorbike sound when you twisted it.

We rode those bikes all summer long, building ramps and obstacle courses. Out in the morning, footy and cricket in between bike rides. “Be home before it gets dark.” TWTD.

What bike did you have as a kid? on 20:39 - Sep 26 with 964 views | Lord_Lucan | I had a Tomahawk, which I believe was smaller than the Chipper, which was smaller than the Chopper. Had it nicked whilst standing it outside Mr Ahmeds but amazingly a copper found it and brought it round my house that evening after mother reported it stolen - those were the days eh? I outgrew it and I was bought a cheap racing bike, much inferior to my cousins Eddy Mercx (sp) Fecking chain was always coming off. I blooming hated it.

That was life as a teenager. It literally was 'be back for your tea' wasn't it. Lazy days on Rushmere Heath, as there was quite a network of cycle tracks and jumps. Then a bit later there was the cycle speedway tracks that we'd burn around. Pinching golf balls to confuse the golfers. TWTD indeed. Video games and all the tech these days are pretty impressive, but I wouldn't swap it for what we had 'back in the day'. [Post edited 27 Sep 2024 10:09]

My dad had a very loud and very distinctive whistle (with his mouth and two fingers, not the physical object)... wherever we were playing in the streets, we heard his whistle and knew it was time to run/cycle home for tea. It was like the aural equivalent of the Bat Signal.

What bike did you have as a kid? on 11:31 - Sep 27 with 784 views | gainsboroughblue | Having researched, it appears that I was lucky to have a Grifter as they stopped making them the year I got it, 1983.
