New Cobbold Stand then 14:10 - Sep 30 with 5408 viewsIllinoisblue

I see Forest have put in a small temporary construction between their stands (four tiers of exec box + seats it looks like) - is there opportunity to do something like that while the Cobbold is being rebuilt? As in, demolish the whole thing but then add a Gillingham style scaffold structure (for away fans?) while building carries on around it? Reducing capacity at a time when demand for tickets has never been higher is quite the conundrum.

I think we should stick the away fans in the corner between Cobbold + Churchmans, stick them high up into the sky and don't give them a roof.

Reducing capacity means nothing in the grand scheme of things. The vast sums of TV money involved mean we can comfortably afford to take the hit on reduced capacity/ticket revenue.

EDIT: That's talking from a pure commercial perspective, obviously. Pain in the bum for non ST holders, mind!

I’ve already solved this problem. Attach each of the away fans to a helium balloon with a tether. They can float above old Staples car park, drip trough underneath, cracking view, what’s not to like?

Any misbehaviour, cut the tether. They get a free ride and a free balloon.

Sorted.

This is so true and is exactly why Bournemouth will spend £40.2m on a striker and not expand their tinpot stadium.

The fact the ownership want to expand the stadium is striking, given that Bournemouth and Brentford will happily stay at under £20,000 for as long as they can. A redeveloped Cobbold will add value to a potential club sale in the future, but they won't make their money back in gate receipts, hospitality etc. for a very long time.

I would imagine they'll do everything they can to facilitate building the new stand around the existing. It's definitely possible and will cost a bit more. I just don't see how they could lose the stand for a season and a bit. If we remove the Cobbold and with the necessary away tickets would we even fit all the existing season ticket holders in? I wouldn't fancy being MA and having to have that conversation with existing season ticket holders!

Mark Ashton has already confirmed that's been looked at.

I thought, from the moment they shut Portman Road off from Sir Alf Ramsey Way onwards, that they were looking at the effects of building a new stand over the road.

Fingers crossed they can make it work.

30,000 capacity - 7,000ish Cobbold capacity leaves us with 23,000 seats. 20,000 season ticket holders plus finding somewhere for a block of 3,000 away fans is going to leave some season ticket holders missing out and lots being moved and separated.

That happened during Covid, I think, and they maintained it from there.

The cost will be interesting; Fulham spent 80 million for their new stand. Even allowing for London pricing that’s a heck of an investment.

We'd only need to give away fans 10% of our capacity, so 2300 if so. Not that those 700 freed up seats would solve the capacity problems if this was to happen!

True, but with the majority, if not all, of the others it was traffic calming down side roads/residential areas. Portman Road isn't really neither, so I think it might have played a part. Admittedly, developing the Cobbold Stand looked a long way off at that point.

I think Liverpools stand was about £80million so I would imagine that will be our ballpark figure we'll be work to. Definitely need to keep that PL money coming in!

It does rather surprise me that, along with all of the various stipulations about light levels, massage rooms for referees, and countless press-box seats, the PL haven't introduced a slightly more rigorous minimum capacity as part of their entry requirements.

On the other hand, I suppose that capacity only really affects the fan experience and, therefore, wouldn't ever enter into their thinking.

If you look at the plans for the new Swimming Pool development on the old cattle market site, you can see that the footprint of the new Cobbold stand comes right back across the road and into the Cattle Market. It should be sufficient to build behind and over the Cobbold stand, before dismantling existing structure. That should minimise the reduction in capacity while construction get underway.

IIRC Fulham are spending around £100m on their new stand, a similar sum to the Selhurst Park redevelopment costs.

If the club were to build a new stand, do we have to give away fans 3,000 tickets.
Look at Luton, Brentford and Bournemouth…..appreciate the grounds are not as big but got away with a reduced number of away fans.

Yes. At all times it would be the lower of 10% of capacity or 3,000 tickets.

Another option could be just not to have season tickets at all for the season that the builds take place.

That way everyone gets a chance for a ticket.

Is that why they only had a 25m pool in the concept, not a proper 50m pool? Couldn't afford the extra water?

Or just not have visiting supporters. I seem to recall the Premier League allowed that for Newcastle when they were renovating St James Park in our relegation year. I seem to recall Town opened up the Cobbold Stand for fans to watch the game on a big screen.

I've not known anything like it!!

In 1992 Had no problem on a match by match basis
In 2000 again very little problem making games either home or away despite by then living in the North East with limited opportunity for Portman Road games.
Yet now in 2024 - no chance whatsoever in the on line scramble dance for every game.

Probably have to get relegated before I have any chance of getting into PR again.
