The worst things that Starmer has done is give away the Chagos Islands without even asking the people living there, the winter fuel payments disaster, giving in to huge public sector pay demands, private school tax, and generally chasing off high-earners amongst other things are the worst things that the Labour government have done in a very short time.

It's amazing that the new government has managed to start and conclude the no doubt long and involved process of international diplomacy required to cede sovereignty of some territory to another state in the (checks calendar) three months since it was elected.

Well done everyone at the Foreign Office. At this rate, they'd be able to solve the crisis in the Middle East in time for Christmas.

"The worst things that Starmer has done is give away the Chagos Islands without even asking the people living there..."

From wiki: "Since 1971, only the atoll of Diego Garcia has been inhabited, and only by employees of the US military, including American civilian contracted personnel."

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Have you ever encountered 'Swifties'?! I can absolutely see why a police escort would be appropriate in the circumstances.

(also, it's 'Yvette'. Might want to double-check how you're spelling people's names before calling them idiots)

And the key thing, given the US base there, is that the agreement was welcomed with open arms by Biden and Blinken.

Once again, it is just a non-story.

It wasn't a police escort for her, it was for Taylor Swift after she received what the police called 'credible death threats'. It's such a nothing story but these people need something to froth at the mouth over.

Visiting teams get a police escort to our bloody stadium, for God's sake.

There's a difference between a police escort the like of which football teams might get and the police special escort group the like of which was arranged for Swift and is only reserved (normally) for royal protection and senior politicians.

The reality is if it were Tories taking thesr freebies and arranging special security for their chums. The Labour Party, the media and the 10page crew on here would be all over it like a rash.

Even if the alleged facts are true, I would much rather the Tories had spent the last fourteen years bagging free hospitality and giving police escorts in return, rather than systematically dismantling the country and handing it over to their chums...

I think you are doing them a favour by assuming they had a system, it always looked (apart from Theresa May who diarised her moves to set traps) that they acted from nothing more than craven greed.

Your name suggests you've already fled the country in anticipation of a Labour government.

I left the country many moons ago. I live in Germany now, it's probably in an equally bad state with neither country looking like it will get much better soon. Although, the Germans do seem to be waking up to the crisis.
The way I see it in the UK was that the Conservatives deserved to lose, but the people didn't deserve to get Labour.

When you say that the Germans are 'waking up to the crisis', I assume you are referring to the ongoing rise of Alternative für Deutschland, particularly in the former Eastern states?

Germany certainly has its issues but according to my sister-in-law there, who has seen the NHS upfront recently when visiting her mother, this does not include its health service, something which appears to be backed up by international comparisons.

I was wondering if you're registered to vote here, and did vote in July? My sister-in-law and a friend in Paris both took advantage this time of the removal of the 15 year limit.

China will be really happy with Starmer, and if China is happy, we are doing foreign policy wrong and possibly encouraging a huge war.

You don't think Labour do that too?
It's just a cycle of two different groups damaging the country for their own ends. It breaks up the monotony being screwed over in a slightly different way.
To be fair to the Conservatives, they were only Labour lite and they weren't going far-right on the economy or as far-left on culture as Labour will.
The proof that these two parties are not working for the country is that we have had a managed decline for at least two decades, and the seeds for that decline were sowed a decade earlier.

China is the line that the right wing media are pressing but it doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

I suggest you read Biden's statement in full, but this appears to be the key paragraph.

Diego Garcia is the site of a joint U.S.-UK military facility that plays a vital role in national, regional, and global security. It enables the United States to support operations that demonstrate our shared commitment to regional stability, provide rapid response to crises, and counter some of the most challenging security threats we face. The agreement secures the effective operation of the joint facility on Diego Garcia into the next century.

We forced the people living there off the islands 50 years ago, illegally, according to international courts.

The rise of the AFD should be a warning bell for the centre to take notice. It does feel like the centrist parties are understanding the sentiment on immigration. Merkel made a huge mistake that everyone living here is paying for when she said that Germany could handle taking all of those migrants.
I'll give you an example, kindergarten places are very difficult to get and I have to drive about 10 miles away to his creche as the one a stone's throw away is full. We felt very fortunate to get a place, they just don't have the resources, still they were assigned a lot of Ukrainians who often understandably don't really want to be here.
There is a really nice Syrian family living across the street, they all speak German very well and seem kind hearted (they gave us some food a couple of times), still they don't seem to want to live within the culture of Germany because they don't let their daughter go in our house.
In general integration is difficult, I have ties to the area through my wife and her family so that helps a lot. I still have to work at the language, but aside from the language I fit in pretty well.

It's probably better to first establish the facts and then get upset about them, rather than the other way round.

Although having said that, you're right that the UK and Mauritius should be paying more attention to the interests of the Chagossians. It's just more modern day imperialism at the moment.

(Taylor Swift is a non-story; she won't be the last to have some form of police protection and I'd argue it's not entirely unreasonable given the incidents around some of her recent concerts. Although it could well be seen as overkill if they had no intel about a threat. Not that it really matters).
