Sheeran's sponsorship 09:57 - Oct 19 with 8751 viewsZx1988

Ashton has confirmed that he won't continue the front-of-shirt sponsorship next season, "to allow [the club] to get a bigger sponsor".

My immediate thought was "oh yay, Asian betting firm incoming", but it's interesting that Ashton continues to say that part Sheeran's reasoning behind the sponsorship was to get the previous gambling sponsor off the shirt.

Hopefully (and I know I'm being naïve here) this might indicate that next year's FoS sponsor might be slightly more palatable than might otherwise be the case?

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Sheeran said prior to the Liverpool game that he will only sponsor us for one season in the Prem as it’s quite expensive haha that’s why he purchased his shares in the club, he also said he wouldn’t allow the club to get a gambling sponsor and part of the reason why he wanted to sponsor us was because of that horrid Magical Vegas sponsor.

So horrid they gifted the final year of their sponsorship over to The Carers Trust.

The horrible bstards.

Indeed .... I'm guessing their packaging is no longer so attractive if they still exist.

Agree… has been my guess for quite some time! They are realistically our only ‘Elite’ partner who have the financial weight to pull it off.

Aspalls are another ‘Elite’ partner and I’d love to see them on there - or greene king or Adnams.

Genuine question is sponsorship normally more about brand awareness ? Would MSC need that as I guess whoever needs to know about them would anyway...I can see why betting and drinks companies...carabao for example may benefit ...or even Mrs miggins pie shop.

Fairly sure DP World are behind London Gateway, a direct rival to Felixstowe, I can't imagine that would go down too well locally?

Yeah an awareness thing especially for higher division clubs, especially when broadcast overseas etc.

MSC might seem like a biggish name around here becomes if their offices etc, but they are still competing with some giants like Carnival, Virgin etc when it comes to cruises. Arsenal have Emirates as a shirt sponsor for example, massive massive brand but keeping themselves front of mind will be worth millions to them.

The cruise division of MSC are already sponsors of Formula 1. It's the shipping division (the parent company of the cruise line) that sponsors us. Who knows how much they operate independently.

'Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A., branded as MSC, is an international shipping line founded by Gianluigi Aponte in Italy in 1970. The company is owned by the Aponte family with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, since 1978. It is the world's largest container shipping company by both fleet size and cargo capacity, controlling 20 per cent of global container capacity as at July 2024.'

can't see a betting sponsor personally. they're banned from '26 onwards and it seems like a whole lot of paperwork just to sponsor us for a year, not to mention as others have previously stated, Ashton doesn't fancy it.

Assuming that Sheeran will eventually stop touring, it would need to change anyway.
It's interesting that Sheeran feels it's too expensive because it's the most reciprocal sponsorship any club can possibly have and I assume we would/should ask for far less from Sheeran because of the shirt sales/general interest he generates with his fanbase by wearing it.
We will likely see a drop off in shirt sales as a result of losing his sponsorship and wonder if we would recover that value from another bigger sponsor.
Is he going to do promotional stuff wearing an ITFC shirt with the name of a big corporate sponsor on the front instead? That would be quite complicated.

I thought this was interesting:
"Another big expansion will be our relationship with Ed Sheeran. You’ll also see us in the U.S. at some point, probably in some sort of collaboration with him."
Does this mean some sort of ITFC pre-season US tour with him doing a concert?

Joking aside with the JPS black did any cigarette companies ever sponsor an English football team ?
Betting is being stopped, pay day loans too..I presume alcohol will eventually be banned from sponsorship… i remember back in the 80s Wolverhampton speedway team were basically sponsored by Scientology fans and I’m sure peterborough by a chewing tobacco… skol bandits ?
