Chris Kaba verdict 19:12 - Oct 21 with 28068 views | Zx1988 | https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c17lk592ygdo Not sure what I make of this. If, as the article perhaps suggests, the verdict hinged upon the testimony of Blake's fellow firearms officers, I feel a distinct sense of 'they would say that, wouldn't they'. Is there any other scenario where, essentially, the corroborating testimony of one's chums would be enough to secure a not guilty verdict?

Chris Kaba verdict on 22:08 - Oct 23 by The_Flashing_Smile | As I said to you earlier (but you might've missed it): I don't see anything wrong with his statement there. He needs to support the decision whilst also not inflaming tensions, so has to be very careful with his words (re: the black community). At worst it's a politician's answer, trying to appease everyone. There will be people in the black community, who don't like him, saying it favours the police. People who don't like Khan pick over his words to find what they want. |
I’ve been out much of the afternoon and evening and haven’t been thorough in reading all the posts (that’s my excuse). You are probably right - I am certainly no politician but have seen first hand how the mould words and phrases to suit purposes. One point of interest is that he ‘respects’ the decision. He doesn’t say that he supports it. As for choosing words, I’d like to see the same words used for all people, not selective sensitivity. One law, one set of words, one justice system. No treading carefully for the Cylons or any other community. You tread carefully for all.

He's treading carefully because he is the mayor of London The right wing don't like him because 1) He is Muslim 2) He is a Labour Mayor 3) Various other axes to grind There's so many right wing conspiracies against him which the grifters continually push to agitate their base

I liked him in Star Trek. Best ever baddie: ‘We are one big, happy fleet! Ah, Kirk, my old friend, do you know the Klingon proverb that tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It is very cold in space!’ Personally think he is pretty rubbish as London Mayor though, compared to say Andy Burnham in Manchester, and London has noticeably declined since the Olympics. As for ULEZ zones, don’t get me started on that! Where does the in excess of £220m go (2022 figure)? Back to the justice system, I certainly agree with Bournemouth on that. The neglect, incompetence and mess left by the last government is staggering. A former work chum worked in the Petty France HO and boy did he have some tales to tell. If reports are right and Reeves wants 20% savings from it, god knows where it’s coming from.

The proceeds from the ULEZ fines / revenue go into public transport improvements. That's not exactly a secret. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Again, he has to say "respects'. Firstly, he wasn't on the jury so isn't privy to all the evidence. Secondly, if he says "supports" he'll piss off large swathes of ethnic minorities (let's not forget he is one) who also don't know all the facts, but do know another young black man has been killed by the police. It's not a case of having different systems for different communities, it's just a very sensitive topic at a very sensitive time. You and me can say the decision was correct and Kaba was a wrong-un, but no-one cares what we say. If the mayor of London says it he risks starting riots.

Ha, you're talking absolute bobbins again Benters. Come to Crystal Palace, it's lovely here. My family came down recently to visit and they were amazed at how "leafy" it was. We have literally two woodland walks on our road. One of them leads to a chocolate shop that has a menu of hot chocolates like a wine menu - from different countries, different beans and strengths of cacao etc. Truly wonderful. I bet you've never heard of such a thing let alone tried it. I could name you loads of other lovely places and great things to do. London, like any major city, has plenty of bad bits. But plenty of great stuff too. Like your views on decent food and rucksacks; because you haven't experienced it your ignorance tells you it's cr@p.

the great thing about re-runs of series like the sweeney is that you get to see again london in the 1970s. it really was a grim, grimy place still pock marked by bomb sites and industrial decline. 'beautiful' it was not.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

Benters lives in a cartoon world where the train drivers push a button that says "Go" and sit back and read the paper, while the postmen all have black and white cats and there's bobbies on the beat who give you a clip round the ear for saying boo to a goose. today they would have been preserved for their historical and social significance. i obviously only knew it as a kid, and i do feel nostalgic, but even then i could see that it was a bit of a sh*t hole.

In practical terms, ok maybe he does. Or could he have said on the basis of the evidence the independent Jury came to the correct decision? Too inflammatory? But I repeat, I don’t see colour and anyone who knows me will tell you that. Any form of ‘ism’ isn’t acceptable in my earshot. Tiptoeing round ‘ethnic minorities’ points towards having different systems for different communities and different people. It also makes the police’s job harder. Yes I understand what the police have got up to in the past only too well having known enough of them and worked in SE15 area for a couple of years and that’s unacceptable. Has that changed? Is it changing? I hope so. It has too. Maybe saying it as it is and breaking open a sensitive topic like this is the way forward? But it’ll never happen and rightly so for the reasons you give. My views on this are very idealistic and pretty impractical. There’s a reason why I could never be a politician or Mayor - I wouldn’t last a minute😃. But there is nothing wrong with being clear on right and wrong and in this instance I presume there is right in the decision (DJR and people with expertise are better qualified to comment) but I see a lot of wrong in how it was done, not least the impact on the officer and his family. I repeat, one set of rules for all!
