US Election - TWTD Chat Room - Tuesday from 22:00ish on 06:34 - Nov 6 by Churchman | It’s depressing from every aspect from freedom of speech to gun laws to just about everything else in America. Trade wise, the first thing the orange one will do is tariffs. An awful lot of trade is done by this country with the US and a lot of that will be under threat. But the coldest wind will be blowing through all the countries that border Russia. They’re on their own. |
William Hague said yesterday that he is not a conservative because he does not believe in free trade, which will impact the UK, and the whole world. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/nov/06/donald-trump-tariffs-would-cut-u [Post edited 6 Nov 2024 7:02]

This is a devastating result. Last time around he had grown ups in the room to curb his excesses. This time around he has his own people who are as bad as, if not worse than him.

How tf can any woman look at themselves in the mirror and vote for a sexual predator who wants to rid them of the right to their choice? Shame on that fella who had a chance to end this all a few months back but couldn't shoot an oversized orange.

US Election - TWTD Chat Room - Tuesday from 22:00ish on 07:13 - Nov 6 with 1109 views | tractordownsouth | Horrendous. I don’t think the coverage here has fully appreciated how Trump’s campaign has been far more extreme even than in 2016/20, so the result is extremely worrying. Especially for Ukraine. It’s clearly a very difficult year for incumbents everywhere but the Democrats should have been looking for a successor at the start of Biden’s term, rather than toying with the idea of running him until three months before election day.

Yep. Biden has to take responsibility for this. But the Harris campaign was very poor. She didn’t set out a positive vision for America. Her who pitch was “what an appalling person Donald Trump is”.

I think she as a candidate performed much better than I thought she would. On the issues, she was right to focus on abortion as a wedge issue but I never really saw her take the fight to Trump on the economy, particularly with the tariffs.

But everyone already knew everything there was to know about Trump when the polls were in his favour against Biden. Continuing to focus on Trump rather than projecting her own vision was a poor tactic by the Harris campaign.

I guess it's the way things are on both sides over there, but there seems to be virtually zero debate based on policy detail - none whatsoever so far as I can see. It's a sad indictment of the modern human that the future of the world is decided by sound bites and simplistic imagery. I realise that we probably can never go back to real bi-lateral and adult policy debate, but a more serious and relatively detail-heavy campaign from a serious politician would surely appeal to a good chunk of the electorate still?

I don’t think Harris did too much wrong. She’s everything Trump isn’t which is a good thing. But there’s a problem. She’s a woman and in many parts of America that bars her from the top job. It’s a strange country, almost backwards in some areas, with its attitudes. The US is countries within countries really and because of fairly common language I think we at times fail to appreciate just how foreign it is. It is also very insular from their news to many people’s daily lives. I appreciate my perception is very limited and subjective, having seen relatively little of such a huge country on my travels. I’d appreciate the views of those who know it properly.

It's hard to think of a larger "Turkeys voting for Christmas" event in recent times. - Hispanics have voted for him despite him wanting to deport large numbers of them. - Women have voted for him despite him supporting the imposition of laws which mean they will have less body autonomy. - Black people have voted for him despite him clearly being close to pro-white groups. - Christians have voted for him based on his morals which don't seem to be aligned to theirs (or anyone else's at all). - Muslims have voted for him despite him clearly being more likely to back Netanyahu on the basis of some strange protest vote because the current government hasn't supported Gaza enough. It all seems to be based on the economy of which there is very little evidence he is any better than anyone else. During his last term he inherited a decent economy and in the private sector he has many failed ventures. Most economists think his plans to go protectionist will cost the US money rather than make it. It's all baffling to me, the level of cognitive dissonance required to vote for Trump if your one of the demographics above is quite something. It's actually impressive that he's managed to appeal to all these groups whilst actually being pretty much against their interests. SB

It’s absolutely a backwards country, it’s a first world country in name only. Its social attitudes and health & welfare programmes put it firmly in third world territory where it would appear corrupt, sexist, racist, paedophile-befriending billionaire criminals are still more preferable than women.

You don't understand the situation well enough. Trump has no intention to enforce anything on the States, his position is absolutely opposite. He will be passive and let the States decide for themselves. Give your head a wobble, supporting assassinations now!

I went against the polls and what my head was telling me and instead I made an emotional prediction because I wanted Trump to lose. I’ll put my hands up and admit to calling this wrong. But it’s an American election and I’m not going to be calling the American electorate stupid like some on here. Lessons need to be learned by the Democrats. Those calling the electorate stupid haven’t learned the lessons of Brexit, Trump’s first win, the UK in 2019 and other populariist movements around the world that are gaining traction. People in the progressive side if politics need to engage and understand why many in their natural base are voting for right wing politicians. [Post edited 6 Nov 2024 12:29]
