He’s a bully and a cocky one at that - but the trouble now is that he’s surrounded himself with aggressive idiots. Think last time, a few sensible politicians were still close to him.

Please may I ask, why are you still on Twitter?

BBC News reported that he wants NATO members to spend 5% of GDP on defence, and he wants the hostages in Gaza released before his inauguration "or there will be hell".

One thing I will say is that in his recent appearances he looks different and seems to have aged a bit.

Both the problem and possibly the blessing is that we cannot believe a word he says. He is full of bluster and soundbites saying what he thinks his followers want to hear. How much he will act on those things is more uncertain.

Around 5.5% was spent on defence by the U.K. in the 1970s, despite a wrecked economy. Since the end of the Cold War, the ‘peace dividend’ has operated and for three years the rise of dictators and threat ignored.

The current government aren’t interested. They’ve proven that, just as they have regarding social care. Not a vote winner for them so a three year review that could be done years faster than that and will probably be ignored anyway - or empty promises made for the next election.

So back to Defence, yet another review this year (third in four years?) while the scrap yards are kept busy and spending is cut. 2.5% one day? When the good times roll or when Nelson gets his eye back? The rest of Europe apart from those under direct threat from Putin are not interested either. Appease and hope the problem goes away has been and is the only policy.

I don’t blame Trump in the least for demanding Nato members contribute 5%. Why should they be the mugs that literally pay the bill? They have been leeched off for decades and Europe can hardly moan if Trump says no more.

Add into this how unstable Trump is. The guy is nuts. He is so simple he is following Putin-policy of might is right so Greenland and Panama Canal? Why not grab them? And Canada too. Canada has been a target for more than two centuries if you know your history. (See war of 1812). Whether the more sane in American politics stop him goodness knows. I don’t understand their constitution so don’t know.

There is a new world order coming where the weak will fall under the foot of the strong. Spheres of influence. The world is going to look very different in the not too distant in my view.

This is just an opinion and probably full of holes - so please pick apart.

In fairness, 5% of GDP is where we were until the end of the Cold War in 1991.

It should absolutely be 5% minimum.

The first duty of the government is to protect its citizens - even if it’s at the expense of giving aid to third world countries with a space program.

Apparently Trump wants to build a gas pipeline to Europe to replace the Orcs gas,to do that he would need to go through Canada and Greenland. He would then have to pay transit fees to both countries in the case of Greenland that would mean that the few people who live there would all become multi millionaires!
The little fact that both countries to be invaded are NATO members seems to have passed him by!🙄
So what’s it to be war or pay the fees?

Just need to find another 2.2% if you use the entire foreign aid budget.

I was surprised to find out we're the 5th highest spenders on defence in the entire world.

how many billion would you need to find to get up to 5% gdp? what would you cut to achieve it?

big cuts to pensions? massively raise taxes? cut the education budget? massively raise business taxes? swingeing cuts to the nhs? huge rises in fuel/alcohol/cigarette/vape duty?

it's all a bit pie in the sky

One of the underlying pillars of our aid programme is to support peace, security and governance overseas, which indirectly keeps us safer if that works well. It’s all interconnected.

Things that people absolutely want the government to provide:
5% GDP on defence
Restore winter fuel payment
Increase pensions/lower pension age
A comprehensive care system
Reduced waiting lists and GP appointments the next day
But also:
Don't put up national insurance for firms
Don't increase minimum wage for firms
Don't increase inheritance tax
Don't put vat on private schools
Labour had better promise they're not increasing taxes or they'll lose the election.

I'm sure there are many, many on both sides of the above that I've missed. And all the answers seem to be foreign aid and stop the boats. Not sure the maths is even on the same planet as people's list of demands and ideas.

too many people are economically illiterate and believe the magic money tree myths put about by your trusses, farages and badenochs.

maybe we should start with an increase to the education budget with a ring-fenced mandatory element for basic economics for the over-40s?

Decades of being promised something for nothing. No, we won't raise anyone's taxes, we'll have a 'war on government waste'. Not just accepting that if you want nice things you have to pay for them. Or the opposite, the Tories whisper about small government now and again, but a chunk of this economic illiteracy is down to them routinely talking of lowering taxes but never truly saying what would be the cost of 'small government' as a result.
