How many other teams in the top four divisions… 07:36 - Jan 12 with 5768 viewsZapatasMoustache

… have a singular nickname? The Gas strikes me as pretty unusual. I can only think of the Toon.

I was thinking of that other nickname for Arsenal but whilst it is only one syllable it is two cheeks, there again only one sphincter.

Possibly, but then he says It's unusual, as in the other meaning of singular. Some clarification needed, methinks.

Sorry Tony, marked you down by mistake.
Assume you are right as to the intent here; Posh & Iron was all I could come up with; Scum is one of those words that can double up as singular & plural ... like sheep.

Not the top 4 leagues, but in the National League, Ebbsfleet are are known as 'The Fleet'.

In Rugby League, I remember Warrington were known as 'The Wire'. I don't know if that got lost as a result of the clunky re-branding that happened across that sport.

Their nickname is the 'Pirates'

I thought 'Gas' was a bit of a self effacing take on Bristol City fans calling them 'Gasheads' and they've kind of taken the joke and done it back to everyone. Similar to the Tractor Boys thing which ended up sticking.

I still consider our nickname 'Blues' or 'Town' as plain or boring as it sounds.

Like 'Gunners' and 'Gooners' I think there's a difference between a nickname and a moniker. Unless times have changed and I'm just an old fart.

Technically gas is uncountable, so there is no plural or singular form.

Talking of nick-names, the Tractor Boys is of course relatively recent. But when did Sunderland become the Black Cats and Nottm Forest the Tricky Trees?
I don't recall those names growing up [many years ago].
